This meet is now one of the premier meets of the outdoor season. The first true test of your fitness level early on in the year. With each year this meet becomes more impressive and this year will hold true to that. Here is the starting list: http://pa.milesplit.com/meets/152496/attachment/288682
After viewing this list, three things stood out to me: The 800, the 1600, and most impressive by far, the 3200.
In the 800 we have some big names on this list, but after looking at the schedule it's after the 1600, so hopefully they're ready to pull off some sick doubles. Reigning state champ Zach Brehm looks to make his come back after a pretty rough indoor season. I'm actually surprised to see Carlise at this meet, but not as surprised as I am excited. I want Brehm to absolutely kill it. While on the topic of Carlise, Jon Carroll is also in this event. He has 1:58 speed to his name and I'd like to think he wants to remind people that Brehm isn't the only stud on the team. We also have newly turned miler, Billy Caldwell in the mix, taking a stab at his old event. With his mile strength, it can only help him become a better 800 runner. State medalist Eli Mercado looks to continue his string of solid races and make his way back onto the podium this spring. Speaking of Mercado, the runner that he edged out for the last medal spot, Andrew Stewart, is definitely looking for some revenge. 9th place is a sour taste in your mouth and a crazy hunger to never let that happen again. Stewart does everything in his power to not let Mercado get the better of him again. Twin Valley's Charlie Hoyt has been running sub 2 since he was a sophomore, he is one of the leaders in the field with 1:57 speed. 400m State Champ John Lewis rounds out this top pack. This will be a fast race from the start and I love the Brehm, Caldwell, Lewis match up.
Top 5:
1. John Lewis 1:56.36
2. Zach Brehm 1:57.12
3. Billy Caldwell 1:58.68
4. Andrew Stewart 1:59.14
5. Eli Marcado 1:59.22
The 1600 has some solid runners in that list. Zach Brehm is the leader on paper looking to make people forget his not breaking 4:30 indoors. I also noticed Eric Diestelow. An injury-plagued indoor season slowed him down, but he came back towards the end and I'm hoping he's 100% healthy and ready to go. He also almost broke his mile PR indoors so I'm hoping that will foreshadow his very successful outdoor season. Ryan Grace had a breakout indoor season, setting huge PR's in the mile and grabbing the last medal spot. I expect big things for him this outdoor season and with the athletes in this field, I'm hoping it starts with this meet. Billy McDevitt had a successful indoor season, more so in the longer events like the 3k, but also ran a few solid 1200's through the year, don't sleep on him. Malvern Prep has stepped it up severely this year and I only can imagine them continuing this success. Pat Hopkins put together a sub 4:30 mile indoors, he will definitely be looking to keep pace with the field. Lastly, Nick Smart. I am very interested to see how he does in the 1600. He's had an unbelievable indoor season and I can only imagine someone with 1:53 wheels and low 16 XC credentials will be able to pull off a huge mile, potentially even an upset. He ran a 4:27 mile at PCL's this year so I'm hoping something in the low 4:20's is in his future.
Top 5:
1. Zach Brehm - 4:24.43
2. Ryan Grace 4:25.26
3. Nick Smart 4:25.64
4. Pat Hopkins 4:29.94
5. Eric Diestelow 4:30.58
The main event is here, the 3200. Over the last couple years, there has been a huge, sometimes breakout, performance. Last year it was Kevin James with a 9:15, before that it was Francis Ferruzzi and Zach Trama with a 9:28 and 9:29. Who's it going to be this year? The field is absolutely stacked. I like the O'Hara duo of Kevin James and Jim Belfatto vs the Penncrest twins of Matt and Chris Kazanjian vs the Penn Charter duo of Scott Mason and Ben Szuhaj. All of these runners have run a sub 9 3k, or it's equivalent (Belfatto 9:01 early season, but 9:22 last year XC season). Adding on to the sub 9 3k club Christian Kardish, Casey Comber, and Paul Power join the front pack. Matt Willig, Rob Morro, Drew Pastore, and Dominic Hockenbury are no slouches either, all of them sub 9:20 3k runners and 2 of them sub 9:10. This field is absolutely filthy and has 6 state medalist, whether that be in a relay or open event.
Top 5:
Kevin James- 9:13.95
Jim Belfatto- 9:16.19
Casey Comber- 9:26.24
Paul Power-9:28.06
Chris Kajanzian-9:30.11
The relays are up in the air, but seeing as most of the relay's top two runners are going open, I'm going to assume only one or two 4x800's will be stacked and no DMR's, like most years. If I had to take a guess, Malvern Prep and Germantown Academy stack their 4x800s and Radnor stacks its DMR.

9:13 for Kevin James at this point in the season and Jim Belfatto running a PR in his first outdoor race? Not sure what you were thinking on that one, but it's not likely. The 1600 seems good, but I think if Logue can run a 4:20 then brehm can do it too. A little aggressive for Smart as well, but for the season he had last indoors I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on that one.
ReplyDeleteRTJ,
ReplyDeleteI know you don't want to give away your real name, but are you going to be at the meet on Saturday?
My name's not too much of a secret, it's Demetrius McCary. I'm not going to the meet on Friday though. I'm at school until Friday morning and then spring break in North Carolina for the whole week that Friday night so I can't make it. I'll probably text a few people for updates though and try and throw up a post as fast as I can, if Forrest isn't back yet.

Ignore the above ^^, my name is Mr. Ross Wilson Sr. - RTJ

Deletehaha want to try and one up me now?
DeleteNot sure how many agree with this but I really feel like people are too high on Brehm this early in the season
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say I agree that Zach Brehm is a stud on Carlisle, but so is Jon Carroll, with his fierce pink headbands. I think he could medal at states in the 800. He placed 8th at Districts last year and had a fantastic XC season. If he stays healthy he could hang with Brehm and kill it.
ReplyDeleteBrehm won't win anything this weekend. I've never even heard of this Carroll kid. Too much hype over Carlisle, they're not going to do anything this year except maybe another 4x8 medal and brehm doing something in the 1600 or 800. Brehm is their entire team anyway, the rest won't do anything impressive like every D3 team. All talk at the beginning of the season and then don't show up at the end.
DeleteAs someone who ran against Carroll last year, I can tell you he's legit. Carlisle doesn't run 7:52 last year just off of Brehm's leg.

The District 3 choke curse is much more arrestive in cross than it is on the track, especially considering the recent success of Brehm and Cumberland Valley, but I still hesitate to trust runners from that area. I have to agree that Brehm is being majorly overhyped right now, nothing about his indoor season at all suggests that he's capable of showing up so big this weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting in these first few weeks to see how the district 3 teams fair time-wise. They all may not have been running indoor meets, but we'll see how many have been training. I myself am really interested to see how the D3 studs in cross pan out. Guys to watch:
ReplyDeleteAaron Gebhart - New Oxford
Aaron Lauer - Red Land
Jacob Connors - Wilson
Jon Goodson - Boiling Springs
Daniel Green - James Buchanan
Brady Wilt - Biglerville
Sophmore studs: Zach Seiger (Red Land) and Brian Delany (Manheim Township)
Wyomissing boys and the CV youngsters too
DeleteI've only heard of 2 of these "studs" before....

DeleteTony Russell ran 4:23 today in a windy ass tri meet against Billy Caldwell. Going out in 2:20 for the first 800....... then running 57 or 58 seconds for his last 400. He also ran a 53 leadoff leg in the 4x400 after running the 3200 without spikes on.
ReplyDeleteFirst place would have to be at least 4:13-14 for me to believe that anyone of them has a chance to even compete with Russell ever after how easy he ran a time like that this early.
How'd the rest of WCH do? Probably very mediocre since they all peaked last year and are burnt out now.
DeleteIt was a tri meet, not an invite. Aldrich, ?, Stratman , Moy win4x8, Knapp wins a Henderson dominated 3200, Moy wins 800, Stratman for 2nd. I think they ran 3 heats of 800. Crazy. Henderson with Schmitt, Moy, Thompson, Stratman win4x4, Thompson 2nd in 300 hurdles.
DeleteAnd Thompson wins high jump
Delete^thanks, Tony.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome ;)
DeleteRiddle me this: How is it that Penntrack has pictures up from the completed PATrack Classic, yet no results?
ReplyDeleteWe do what we want - Don
DeleteThat's not even funny anymore. Are we like 5 seriously?
DeleteFrom what I can gather from the photos, Kevin James did not run the 3200. Belfatto lead wire to wire, followed by a kazanjian. I believe Chris has the more facial hair/longer hair and Matt rocks the short hair and mostly shaven... but don't quote me on that. Dominic Hockenbury for third and Casey Comber right behind him. Matt Kazanjian to finish up the top 5. Not sure why Kevin James dropped the race. I'm don't remember seeing Paul Power either, so he may have dropped it as well. Scott Mason wasn't seen and neither was Christian Kardish. It's hard to tell from photos but I believe those were the top five. Times are unknown at the moment.
ReplyDelete-RTJ
results are up from the classic http://pa.milesplit.com/meets/152496/results/289979
ReplyDeleteThey're awful.
DeleteKeep in mind it was very windy, semi-cold, and very rainy, which is why a lot of big names (Kevin James, Marissa Sheva, etc) didn't even bother to run.
DeleteWhat were the splits on MP and Carlise's 4x800's? And the runners on it.
Even considering the weather, with how good Brehm is, running over a 4:40/2:10 is NEVER acceptable, no matter how early in the season it is. Especially considering he is the 800 state champion and sub 4:10 miler. I really hope this was a training day for him since the weather was so poor. I'm sure he will show up at the end of the season... but wow was I (and probably everyone else) surprised to see his times. I'm hoping he dropped the hammer in the 4x800.
-RTJ
RTJ, not sure if you were at the meet, but the weather was just awful. In response, the PTFCA ran roughly 40 minutes ahead of schedule, and the times sucked accordingly. Doubling, not to mention tripling, was nearly impossible.
DeleteBrehm anchored the 4x8 in what looked like a fairly solid split. He got the baton in 3rd and took the lead by the end of his first lap. On his second lap, Jaxson Hoey (who got the baton in 1st or 2nd) outkicked him. He then had somewhere from 10-20 minutes to run the mile, and it was clear that his heart wasn't in it. I did not see him run the 800, but it is ludicrous that he actually toed the line for that. There were a ton of scratches across the board. Still, one has to wonder if he's either not as fit as he was last year or struggling with pressure after breaking 4:10 and winning states as a sophomore.
Gotta give major props to Ryan Grace; if his training goes well and he gets the opportunities, he should run well under 4:20.
The pictures tell it all. Props to everyone who ran. Many teams packed up and went home. Others bagged it altogether. Shame about the weather.
DeleteAs a Carlisle runner, not Sean and not a 4x800 member I can tell you it was a workout day for Brehm and his teammates. No other runner tripled.
DeleteBrehm ran 4:20 yesterday and shit on Cather so whats that about pathetic?
DeleteNice try Sean... we know it's you
ReplyDeleteIt really wasn't I promise.
DeleteI actually don't know who posted that.
Times very weak
