Kyle Francis

I was not planning on blogging during the races (Jarrett and I are watching them on a big screen together), but I can't ignore discussing the race that I just saw. I haven't jumped around watching a track race since the 800m Finals last summer when Simmons placed second overall.

Francis' performance was legendary. Taking out a field with 3 sub 1:54 guys in 26 low, into a 53.7, continued to push the pace coming through 600m in 1:22.1 (remember that 600m specialist Jeff Wiseman ran 1:20.67 for the open 600 a couple weeks ago) and then continually dropped the hammer despite pushes from Wiseman and Logue to finish in a overall state record, and a state indoor meet record of 1:50.55. Just brilliant. It was a ballsy move by all accounts and it clearly paid off for the young man.

Congratulations Kyle Francis.

  1. Since Forrest and Etrain are on the road, and no one else is posting, I’ll take up some space to post some slop about states:

400 – Yeah, I know it’s not a distance event but deep down John Lewis knows he’s really an 800 guy! He came up huge in the 400, with a monster PR or 48.34 which is a US#4, an upset of Pennsbury’s Snorweah but just as important is that it set the tone for his team’s day, as they went on to win comfortably.

DMR – Pretty easy win for WCH. Moy/Russell solid off the double, if Thompsons split really was the 51 the commentator said, that’s outstanding for him. Stratman ran very well too, he had the big lead but still went out hard and pushed it. Nice job by LaSalle taking 2nd.

4x800 - I was hoping this race would be a little closer for the leaders to push each other to the record but it wasn’t in the cards. Good job by O’Hara taking 2nd with DWE running well.

Mile – I didn’t think Russell would go for the record, it’s a shame he came up just a few hundredths short. Leading all the way and running a 4:12 is incredible. If it hadn’t become so routine for him there would probably be more excitement about it. Anyway, it’s nice to see him get state gold on the track. Hoey went with him as I suspected he might. He ran a very gutsy race, not at all intimidated and was rewarded with a 2 second PR and solid 4th place finish. Wilson was in the hunt for 2nd too and ran a nice PR. Belfatto, I didn’t see that coming, a 5 second PR is huge and this just made OH that much better but more on that in a minute. Caldwell answered some of the earlier trash talk on this blog with a very strong run and Bilotta had a nice PR too. Great job by Groh running away out of the 2nd heat, he may have placed higher if in heat 1.

3000 – What a strange race this was. It looked like Cummings and Deluca went out in 63, then 2:11? The pack held back a bit but were still out too fast. Yet somehow most of the finishing times came in about where expected. Very impressive that Deluca was able to hold off Brophy and James down the stretch after getting out so quick. Now Martin I picked to win it but not in 8:30 with what looked like a bit left in the tank. He may be the guy to get PA under 9:00 in the 3200 outdoors in quite a few years.

800 – Wow. I mean, what else can we say. Who comes into a state championship the #3 seed and leads wire to wire, takes 3 seconds off his PR, shatters the state record, runs what may be a top 10 high school all time indoor 800 and looks strong the entire time doing it? Well, Kyle Francis. Logue and Wiseman must have heard splits during the race and been wondering what the heck is going on here, they both ran huge indoor PR’s and never really challenged for 1st. Just incredible. And I had said I was disappointed Francis skipped the mile for the 800! Good call by Forrest picking him to win but really, he should have given the guy more credit than that 1:51.64 prediction (which I thought was crazy when I saw it!) Also a big PR for Nick Smart and this also just made OH that much better and more about that now.

Looking ahead, the indoor and/or Penn Relays DMR with Henderson and O’Hara could really be something special. Last year’s LaSalle squad was awesome at Penn Relays and both these teams have a shot at bettering them. Right now I’d have to give the edge to O’hara, which I wouldn’t have even considered yesterday (but I do consistently underestimate them). Belfatto and Smart ran great today, big PR’s and if it can be maintained, that’s a big time DMR they could crank out with Smart on the 800, Belfatto 1200 and James on the 1600. WCH, if Thompson’s 51 split was accurate he’s their 400 guy, which means the 800 and 1200 go to either of Moy or Stratman. If Moy’s earlier 1200 split of 3:06 was accurate than he’s better in the 1200. I’m not sure what happened to him in the mile today though he looked good in the DMR 800. However the line ups go, these DMR’s could be great races to look forward to.

    1. I think that commentator was off on Thompson's 51 split. She had a few goof ups starting with calling Olivia Young, Emily Fisher for most of the mile. However, she did do her homework, got most of it right and considering she was on air for 7 or 8 hours, did a pretty good job.

    2. Good post RJJL. The 800, mile and 3000 were very strong, the relays, not so much but pretty much everyone was on the double there. Francis was flat out sick, where did that come from?

    9. There's a certain level of endurance a runner can get where their wind could be perfectly fine for the entire race but other things like core strength, overall strength, flexibility, and proper form lack, and make their race tougher. There are so many athletes with incredible talent but don't have the other aspects that separate the good from the great. If you match endurance with all the above, then there's less stress on your lungs to push so hard if everything else is in top notch condition. Watch guys like Bernard Lagat run and look for how he is after he crosses the line. He looks like he just got back from a jog.

  6. This was a great State championship on both sides. So many records broken/almost broken.

400- People were upset that Lewis didn't run the 800, but in the end, they didn't need him to and he took advantage of Snorweah's collision to grab a State gold of his own and for his team, great choice in the end. For this year, I'd say he lays off the 800 while Francis, Logue, and Wiseman are still around.

800- Wow. What a race. Easily the best 800 the State has ever seen indoors. I mean that not only because Francis broke the record, but so did Wiseman. He definitely deserves HUGE recognition for his performance as well. Logue dropping a great 1:52 flat as well. If the conditions are right outdoors, I think districts/states will have 3 1:50's and maybe even a sub 1:50.

Mile- Great job by Russell, sucks to see he didn't get the record because he definitely deserves it. If you were to tell me Jim Belfatto would get second I'd probably call you a liar. I don't think ANYONE saw that one coming, great race from him. Ross Wilson showed some wheels the last lap and almost caught Belfatto in the last 10 meters, great to see some speed coming from him. Hoey made a huge mistake going out with Russell. I think he should have been second in 4:15 high, but that's a mistake he will have to learn from. Great job hanging on though, he runs gutsy and I respect that. Not sure why people were hating on Caldwell, I thought behind those guys he was definitely the next medal stand, running 4:23 at Yale and then continuing to drop solid marks from there. His progression over the years has been great.

3k- I was so happy to see Colin Martin snag an individual gold. I hope that completely removes him from Ethan's shadow. I'm very impressed Deluca held on after going out so hard with Cummings. Had he not, Martin would have had a race on his hands. Not sure what Cummings had in mind taking out the 3k in 2:11, but definitely wasn't the right move at a State championship. Had he taken it out slower he would have been on the medal stand. Jake Brophy with the most lethal kick in the game right now. He went from 7th to 3rd, almost second in one lap. His junior year I don't see a person that can keep pace with this kid. Andrew Marston turning XC success into 3k success. He came into the year with a 9:53 3200 PR (from XC) and started it with a 10:03 two mile. He turned that into an 8:50 and state medal, congrats to him!

4x800- Deast with the huge surprise to get third in the 4x800, the rest was pretty predictable though. Francis almost pulled Bensalem onto the medal stand with a solid double. Had there been more time then he would have definitely got them there. Wiseman did pull his team to the medal stand with a solid anchor leg in the first heat.

DMR- No real surprises here. WCH takes the easy win with Russell relaxed. MP didn't do as hot as I thought, but that's because McDevit ran the 3k. Had he not they would have gotten second. Bilotta had a solid double, anchoring his team to second place.

    Lastly thoughts on the meet:

Brianna Schwartz is a monster. She broke the State record when she fell and had to crawl across the line, adding about 2 seconds to her time. Next year she is going to absolutely kill it.

Pretty sure no one in the sport had Unionville winning the DMR. No idea where that 400/800 leg came from, but they tapped into their younger runners and produced solid middle legs for Olivia Young and Courtney Smith.

Last, but not least, HUGE shout out to Liz McGroarty for winning the 800 out of heat two!!! University of Delaware girls must be very happy to have you a part of the team next year... and it's the best school ever so... yeah. That wasn't biased at all.

    1. To add on to this... Russell vs Francis 1200 would be amazing. Both like to go out hard and both have run very impressive times. This would be the ultimate 800 vs mile show case. I wanna say Russell, but after Francis killed the 800 I have to go with him winning in 2:58 to Russell's 2:59.

Penn relays DMR will be amazing and I agree with RJJL O'Hara takes henderson right now after the amazing "showcase" they put on at States... but I don't agree with the order. After Belfatto's amazing mile and James' 1200 success, I say they go James-400-Smart-Belfatto.

    4. Francis wins against Russell in a 1200, hands down. The showdown I'd like to see is Francis Vs. Brehm in either an 800, 1200, or 1600.

      Delete
    5. Francis easily wins the 800. I also believe he takes the 1200 as well. I think Brehm takes the mile, but only if it's late outdoor, like the distance festival.

Brehm was a decent miler until districts when he killed that quad (3200, mile, 4x800, 800). Then he blew down the doors at the distance festival. He struggled hard this indoor season until the very end, I'll chalk that to this being his first indoor season/the weather being very difficult to train in. Russell was training in the same conditions though. Anyway, come outdoor I think he gets back in 1600 conversation with Russell when districts rolls around and 800 conversation with Logue/Cather. Right now Wiseman and Francis are in their own 800 conversation though. This year may be the deepest 800 field since 2010. 1:53 was the last medal spot that year at States.

      Delete
    6. Moy went 4:16 last year outdoors and only 4:25 this year. Stratman Collins and Barchet are all well off of their personal pr's. Meanwhile O'Hara runners are pr'ing every week. It's O'Hara, by a lot.

      Delete
    7. Tony has already split 4:11 the first week of february. With competition and a person to chase he can definitely go under 4:10, a 4:10 split would be a conservative guess for him. There is no way O'hara gaps Henderson enough by the mile that Russell doesnt run down Belfatto or James.

      Delete
    8. What would be the order for Henderson and O'Hara then?
If Russell runs the 1600 leg, does Stratman run the 1200? I'd think Moy would do that and maybe Stratman on the 800? Moy seems more valuable on the 12 than the 8. And Stratman more valuable on the 8 than the 16.
James is definitely the 1600 guy, right? Either way, neither team wins but they keep it close for sure.

    9. Belfatto and Smart beat Moy and Stratman by a total of about 9 seconds. That's enough for James to hold off Russell.

      Delete
    10. Who runs what?
Moy and Stratman ran 1:58 and 4:25 completely unchallenged for State title. I know Stratman has run a 1:57, not sure if he's ever run a 1200. Moy ran a 3:06 in Boston.
Seems Belfatto and Smart are pretty interchangeable too. Does Stratman run the 1600 and Russell the 1200? Think I'd throw Russell on the 1600.,

Then Smart wasted no time in vaulting to the lead, holding it and turning it over to Belfatto. Belfatto held that lead, ran a huge PR again, even though he was unchallenged. 10:00 indoors? All four guys running at or better than previous PR’s? Just another amazing PA performance in a season full of them.

Now Henderson…..just incredible too! 3 solid legs and another huge day for Russell. 10:04 indoors and overshadowed by O’hara, what a bummer. Hopefully they get their due tomorrow in the 4x1 mile with another PA win!

    7. How can you say they burnt out. they're tired as hell from racing out of their mind the day before.... Did you even watch the dmr? O'hara just ran "poorly" too. It's hard to ask 2 big performances in 2 days like that. Russell shut it down in the 2nd 800 in the 4xmile.. so what. Even if he ran 4:07 again they would've still been 4th. He went out in 2:04 and then cruised it in.

      Delete
    8. Barchet and stratman were at 4:20, maybe stratman a second behind it. Kevin could have done better if he didnt run the 1200 the day before. and tack on a second or so to Russell's 4:07 split and they're ahead of where they were. It's the fact that they did run yesterday was what made them slow today. They had no chance to make it into the top three after the 3rd leg, you could see how the motivation to pop out a 4:11 split like Russell did last year wasn't there. Henderson's DMR is great, it would be the best in the country if Moy got his act together and started racing like he did outdoors last year. I say it's about time he is allowed start racing for himself. The Dream Mile is the same weekend as outdoor nationals and I would say that he has done moree than enough for his team and enabled them to race at such big meets that its about time he ends his senior year with a bang. It's unfair to him that he's stuck saving relays when he could be doing much much better on his own. You don't see that happening to any other national caliber runners. It would be great to be on a good team and all but there has to be some compromise and it seems to me that Tony is far on the losing end of that deal and i'm sure he's not happy with it.

    - Russell Millrose mile, 4:11.56, breaking the state record
    - Francis 800 – 1:50.55, running like a madman from the gun, state record, top 10 US all time.
    - O’Hara’s DMR, 10:00.75, state record, top 10 US all time
    - Belfatto going from 4:22 to 4:17 to 4:11 in less than a month
    - Russell 4:07.1 split while trying to chase down Belfatto.

Tough choices. As awesome as Francis and Russell’s records are, and as incredible as Belfatto’s emergence has been, I’d have to go with the O’hara DMR. All 4 running big time PR’s, going after the gold with a mission, that was just crazy great. We may see a team (or two) actually top that performance in about a month at Penn Relays, but it could be a long time after that four guys on a PA high school team drop within 5 seconds a 10:00 DMR.

Tony's races have been awesome, but we've come to expect this sort of greatness - and he consistently delivers it - so he doesn't really have a single standout race because they're all awesome. If we expand this to girls, Tessa destroying the national field in the 5k is up there, as were Schwartz's two fantastic 4:42s. Finally, Belfatto's progression was incredible. 2. That is a tough call. Russell's 4:07 was incredible but buried in a third place finish, too bad he didn't get the baton a little closer. I hear you on the O'Hara DMR but I'd have to go with Francis too, that race had the biggest "wow" factor.

    3. There's only 1 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in the choices so it has to be O'Hara's, DMR 10:00.75, performance!

  26. Ross Wilson with the 4:15 from the slowest heat. That's a 4:13ish 1600. Sub 4:10 outdoors??? If so, what will he do in the 3200??? #8:56

    1. I'm calling pa only has 2 sub 9 2 milers, Russell and Wilson. Russell is on the fast track to sub 8:50. As long as he stays healthy and avoids another stress fracture like last year I think his mile speed and his amazing 5k strength will put him at the top nationally. So far considering the split and the conversion to a full mile, he's tied with gavigan for the fastest mile nationally and he did that going out in 58 seconds for the first 400. I think its finally time to see that 2 mile state record to go down.

Ross also pumping out some solid times and I like how he rolls into shape at the right times in the season. His coach peaks him well and I think he'll break 9 at the Henderson invite and states if collin martin pushes him to it.

  27. Don't be too hasty to leave Colin Martin out of the sub 9 talks. Plus you never know, guys like Deluca and James may not be able to get under 9 but they could still mix it up for a state title

  28. Too bad Russel is staying a miler. Wilson and Martin will go at it for the 3200 meter championship. James will follow behind leading a pack of him, Brophy,Kazanjian, Ethan Martin.

  29. Out of distrcit 1, in the 3200, I see Wilson, Brophy, Chris Kazanjian, and Marston. Also, as long as Barchet and Cummings are healthy, they are good enough to get in there. But with their indoor state performance, will they change something up? That leaves two spots open for people like Paul Power, Sam Webb (still injured?? will he have the same endurance??). Besides that, the final spots are open to that emerging group of sub 16 and sub 9:10 3k guys from indoor and cross country. Look for one or two of those district one type guys surprise and just squueze into the state championship. Just thinking ahead.

    1. I hope Webb gets back into shape by then. I really doubt we will see a 9:14 again but hopefully he has enough to atleast compete for a spot at the state championships.

    2. I'm not sure how long Webb has been running since his injury, and I also doubt that we'll see a 9:14 this year, but remember that talent doesn't go away. Just look at some of the big names who had to miss some time...Magaha (mono, came back to run 1:48/4:08), Willig (didn't race his SR outdoor season, now potentially a sub-4:00 miler), and Norris (out 8 months with hip adductor problem, and we know how his SR year went). Though no longer the best 2miler in his class (probably Kevin James), Sam can quite possibly break 9:10 someday.

Similarly, E. Martin probably won't be as fast as he was last year, but look for him to be at least sub-9:20 and to have a good career at Michigan.

PS: Sleeper pick is Griffin Molino sub 9:10 FTW in AA

    3. One of those O'Hara guys should chime in and let us know how great it was to be on that DMR team.

  30. I'm calling Tony Russell wins the 3200 in 9:08 off a slow pace then a fast last 1600. Then he goes onto win the 1600. Ross Wilson 2nd in the 3200 then Colin martin.

Francis wins the 800 outdoors. Then logue then wiseman

    State college wins the 4x800.

    1. Tony will not be in the 3200. Also I don't believe Franics will win the 800. Although he completely killed indoors, he has all the pressure now. I saw he gets second just like Rivera did last year. Indoor Champion, Runner Up Outdoor

    1. I think it would be really cool if you made a post of predicted PR's for some of the runners. I don't remember something like that ever so it might be a cool thing to try.

  35. Where's Forrest? and RTJ, and RJJL, and GBC? Etrain is back at it and posting some good stuff but his comment section sucks. Nobody is commenting and it says it takes like 6 hours for a comment to clear censors over there. Why don't you guys combine efforts and get back on track (pun intended)???!!!!!!! I don't want to have to go to the evil empire for the dirt and lame previews about talent showcases!
