Weekend 4/4

There were a plethora of meets this weekend and the weather varied for each. Mostly sunny and a bit of wind was this weekend, which is a major upgrade from last weekend. The times tell that story as well. Let's get to it.

DWest invitational

Ryan Mucha taking the win in 201:37 at his home invitational followed very closely by Pat Hopkins of Methacton in 2:01.38. Diestelow coming in third off the double with a solid 2:03. Looks like he's rounding back into form nicely.

Paul Power took the easy win in the mile in 4:34. Not as fast as I would have liked, but it was windy and I'm hoping that's the cause of his time. Sophomore Henry Sappey is running PR's and looking good thus far. He was a 2:02 freshman and I think he could go sub 4:30/2 flat by the seasons end.

Diestelow coming in first with a comfortable margin in the 3200. Not sure how this race went, but I'm assuming him, Zatlin, Cook, and Alansky were broke away early and were together through the first mile, then Diestelow/Zatlin broke away, and then Diestelow put on the burners and created a gap with 600 to go. For a first 3200, that's not bad at all.

Springford absolutely killed the 4x800, soloing an 8:04. I have an idea of three of the legs but the fourths a mystery. They are looking pretty good to get a bid to the Penn Relays and there we will be able to see if they can compete for a top 5 spot at States.

13th Bruce Dallas inv.

Jeff Groh came off his injury indoors in a big way dropping a solo 1:56 which is a pretty big PR for him. Looks like that's all in the past and he's ready to roll. Brook Wilson also showing he's ready to take outdoor by storm, dropping a PR himself as well and taking second. Jonathan Pearlman showing he's got some speed at this point in the season running 2:03 off the double. I look for him to drop a solid 3200. LM knows how to train successful, distance runners.

800m State medalist Austin Cooper won the mile in 4:31 over fellow 800 runner Austin Stetler in 4:32. Cooper placed 10th at States in the mile in 4:23, so this 9 second gap is slightly concerning, but nothing to be too worried about. Pearlman had a solid performance running 4:32, just getting some speed under his legs.

Cole Nissley soloed a 9:40 in the 3200m. He has 9:22 speed so by the end of May I wouldn't be surprised if he's challenging for a medal at States.

Cedarcrest and Central Dauphin battled it out in the 4x800 with Cedarcrest winning in 8:13 to CD's 8:14. Very solid running by both of these teams this early.

Haverford Inv.

State medalist Connor Holm took home (ha) the win in the 800m in 2:02. He's a 1:56 runner so this is fairly disappointing, but he peaks hard towards the end of the season. He was also off the double from the 4x800. He might have only run as hard as needed to take the w. DEast had two solid pieces of their 4x800 in the race with Tom Fitzgerald going 2:03 and Adam Carcella going 2:04. Both were a part of the 3rd place 4x800 at indoor states and look to continue to roll as the season progresses.

James Hare of Marple Newton took the mile in 4:28. He broke out last year going 4:21 and only looks to get better. He edged out Alex Kim of Haverford who ran a 10+ second PR in the race. PJ Murray? I've never heard of him, but he just dropped a 4:30 out of no where. Teammate Nick Cruickshank just behind in a 4:33. David Fowler ran a 4:35, which surprised me seeing as he's a 4:24 1600m runner and Haverford's number one guy. Or was at least. I hope he's healthy and can bounce back from this race.

Radnor killed the 4x800 going 8:01. I'd love to know splits and runners on that. I assume Connor Holm, Andre Kelly, and Watson Hanson were on the relay, but the 4th is relatively a mystery. Upper Darby ran a solid 4x800 as well going 8:07. Kerkula ran a 1:57 at the dual meet so I assume him and Greg Dix split huge on the relay.

TSTCA Outdoor Championships

James Smith continued his outdoor success going 1:56 and taking the win. Dylin Wilhoite came in second going 1:58, improving 6 seconds from just a week ago while of the double and getting revenge on Anderw Koryak who beat him in the mile earlier. Koryak runs a 1:59 off the double, which he also ran a PR in. Very successful day for him. Mitch Endress and Billy Dougherty both going 2 flat to round out the top five. This has been the second deepest 800 field in the state so far.

Andrew Koryak opened up his day in the mile winning in a 4:30, which was a PR. Beating out Dylin Wilhoite who ran 4:33.

Matt McGoey soloed the 3200 in 9:26 which is 3 seconds off his PR and definitely a good sign for the rest of his season. Teammate Hunter Wharrey ran a 9:46, not bad for his first 3200 ever. This is also his first outdoor season. I look for much improvement over the season.

Altoona wins the 4x800 in 8:23 with no competition. I think they can cut a lot of time from that, not sure if they ran that hot though.

Warrior Track Classic

Sophomore Domenic Peretta destroyed the 800 and the 1600 going 2:00.23 and 4:29.60. Excellent times for a sophomore to come out and run, especially after not doing indoors.

Colonial Relays

Andrew Marston took the win in the 3k going 8:45, which is a PR for him. His fitness level is there and with this win I hope his confidence is too. I'd like to see him get an invite to the Penn Relays and race with the big boys. I think he could hold his own.

Gunnar Sjoreen ran 4:26.63 for a full mile. In 1600 terms that would be around a 4:24, which is a sizable PR for him. Conestoga is looking quite good at this point in the season.

Germantown Friends ran a solid DMR in 10:32 for second. I only know two of the members and I assume they were the 1200/1600, but from what I know a 10:32 is a huge surprise. One that could possible land them in the Penn Relays. LaSalle didn't do so hot and Brendan Bilotta only ran the anchor leg on that DMR, so I'm hoping it was a pretty fast one.

Council Rock Kiwanis Inv.

Jeffery Wiseman killed the 800 in 1:54.13. Extremely fast for this point in the season. He's looking really good right now, Francis should be worried. Sophomore sensation Jaxson Hoey ran 1:58.08. He continues to roll and in a couple years he is going to be dominant. He already is beating very talented runners. Alek Sauer going 1:58.62 off the double and Dan Ferraiolo going 1:59.00. Both are very talented runners and have relays that can make noise at a high level. Sadly MP is independent league. Matt Schulberger rounding out the top 5 going 2:01.50 off the double.

The 1500 shocked me more than any race out there. Colin Abert taking out some of the States' best going 4:04 in a dominate run. I've heard it was very windy for this race, which makes it all the more impressive. He's definitely a grinder, but wow. If that was a 1600 I would imagine he'd be around 4:22-ish, which is so much better than he's been doing. Good to see he's back in top shape. Joey Logue going 4:10. He set the MR last year so the conditions had to be brutal. He was also off the double. Kyle Francis and Ryan Grace going 4th and 5th in 4:15.53 and 4:15.68. Kyle Francis opening up his season to an unfortunate 3rd place. I'm sure he will remember this for his next race. Grace ran a 4:25 in the rain and wind last week so I'm surprised to see him so far back. The return of Sam Webb! He went 4:16 which I think is great, all things considered. Glad to see him finally racing after almost a year off.

Ross Wilson and Kevin James battling it out in the 3k. Wilson going 8:37 and James going 8:39. Great times and both should get bids to the Penn Relays, if they already didn't receive one. Nick Smart showing how much range he has going 8:54. Casey Comber going 8:56 showing he's back in shape and ready to run a fast 3200. Brian Artia rounding out the top 5 in 9:06.

Jim Belfatto continuing his hot steak from indoor winning the 5k in 15:42. A windy day is definitely not when you want to be running a 5k but he did just fine. His range is also great as well stretching from the 8-5k. Alexander Balla coming in second in 15:52. These two broke away from the field fairly early and Balla held his own against Belfatto.

CB South ran a solid DMR easily winning in 10:48. I'd like to see how they could run a 4x800. They ran 8:05 and placed 7th indoors so I look to see them run a hot one and soon.

CB East dropped an 8 flat on the field! I'd love to know who was in this relay and the splits for them. They usually have a solid 4x800. Pennridge went 8:02 with what I'd assume was a very fast split by Logue. Pennsbury dropping a fast 8:06 as well. I definitely expect them to run this relay loaded at States. HGP running an 8:15 as well as Twin Valley which surprised me a bit. Both have a solid front runner, but not too deep after that.

Hopefully next weekend we can see solid meets without extreme winds or rain.

  1. Diestelow was out in the 3200 (70 on my watch). Zatlin kind of went into no mans land between Diestelow and the chase pack of 4 or 5 people. Pretty much a solo effort for Diestelow.

    1. Good effort but let's hope he stays healthy, they've got a few top guys out for the season already.

    2. He is at risk for a spinal injury because of how much he carries the team on his back.

    3. DWest races...

800- Went out relatively conservatively (60 first lap). Willig led charge through the 400 and was then quickly over taken at 350 by Mucha and Hopkins (and eventually others). Mucha held off Hopkins in tight sprint to line. Nice kicks by both of them.

Mile- Power and Sappey led group through 800 pretty conservatively (2:19). Broke off pack as Power picked up the pace. Sappey actually hung on for a good portion until about 300 to go where Power's stride was just not going to be matched. Sappey looked good but Power looked great.

3200- Diestalow and Zatlin led from gun. Went out in about 69/2:23. From there, it looked like it was a combo of Zatlin tucking in and Diestalow breaking away. 4:54 and 4:57 for both of them respectively. Diestalow held gap of about 25 meters the entire race until the last lap where had a great kick. Zatlin looked like he had a little left in the tank.

Overall the conditions were brutal for all races. The wind and rain started during the 3200 and 800 (home stretch had big head wind). The mile got the worst of the cold as it got later into the evening. Expect some decent drops next time these guys race.

    4. To add to that, Power was off the double in the 4x8 where he looked like he was hauling. Didn't get a split but it looked quick. He handled that mile well considering that double.

  2. Jeff Wiseman went head to head against Francis in their dual meet and I heard from numerous people including Wiseman that he split 1:50 to beat him! They went out in 51! I definitely think Wiseman will be breaking 1:50 soon! Who do you guys think will hit the mark first?

    1. If that's accurate, that's insane. I want to believe it and after the way Francis took it to them at indoor states it's possible, I could see Wiseman going out ridiculously hard to one-up Francis. But since it's a dual meet, which are notorious for tall tales, I'll have reserve judgment.

  3. What a pleasure to read about the exploits of the the runners in Chester Co. By the way in Bucks County Jeff Wiseman ran 1:54, Ross Wilson ran 8:37 (breaking the legendary Dan Covals 3k record) and CBE ran 8:00 (number 1 in PA) at the CR Invite.

  5. Haverford Invite: Radnor's 4th guy was Patrick Dwyer, Holm split 1:57 low on the anchor.
1600 and 800 went out at a crawl, almost 70 and almost 65 respectively. 800 was highly physical, Holm only running as hard as the win required. After about 600 Hare took over the 1600 with 2:18 through 800 and 3:25 through 1200. Scary-looking final lap. Same with Hanson's 3200

  6. Good 4x8s but who of these teams will actually run it come championship season?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. CB East, Pennridge, SJ Prep, Spring Ford, Germantown Friends, Altoona, NP and Upper Darby will all run hot more than likely.

Teams like Radnor, Pennsbury, Carlisle, MP, MB, LaSalle, Pennridge will not run it stacked because they have a stud that will have an open or two. Pennridge ran 8:01 without Logue however, so they look to be in very good shape.

    2. MP is also independent league, so they will probably run a 4x800 as hard as it takes to win and nothing more. Penn Relays will be their last outing, if they make it.

    1. Maybe I've been missing out, but where the hell do some of these people get these seed times? Germantown Friends apparently has 4:21 and 4:26 milers? Sjoureen and Marston have run 4:20? (I actually think Sjoureen is eventually capable of that). Sun Valley has a sub 9:50 guy? There's a couple other times I questioned.

I don't ever want to take away the credibility of anyone. The craziest things can happen on any given day and big times can be dropped. But what's the point of seed times if people are gonna lie? I can understand smudging 1-2 seconds but you really gotta wonder why some coaches put their kids so fast. If I'm misunderstanding something I 100% apologize but that's just my 2 cents.

      Delete
    2. Most schools embellish times or use last year's PR's so that their runner can be in the hot heat. I agree with you though, I think GF may have 1 4:20, but definitely not 2. Marston can't keep pace with Sjoureen, but I think Sjoureen can run a 4:20-ish. Snn Valley definitely doesn't have a sub 10 guy, much less sub 9:50. That whole list is what coaches either think their runner can run or hope they can, but most will not be accurate.

The mile was crazy- 20 guys under 4:30. Russell's last 400 was sub 60 (2:03 last 800). Henderson's milers looked great so did Hoey and Caldwell. Whoever said Marston and Sjoureen couldn't run 4:20 needs to apologize now.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep. I'll admit it. I thought Marston's time was BS and I was absolutely wrong. Not going to apologize about Sjoureen though. Said I thought he could hit it. Marston on the other hand blew me away. I didn't think he had the kind of speed and dear lord was I wrong. Congrats to him.

    2. The mile at the Warrior is always outstanding, it's the premier event in one of the best early April invites. Strangely, most of the performances today will be the PR's for the season, even with the big Henderson meet in May, Districts and States to come a month from now.

      Delete
    3. The times are always fast because they use a rabbit in that race, which really goes against the spirit of high school competition. That's why WCH guys had so many great PR's last year but did nothing at states. The times are kind of bogus since there's no strategy or competition until the last lap.

      Delete
    4. The rabbit went out in 27 seconds for the first 200 then came through in 65 seconds and then 2:07. Like it really helped at all. Tony passed the rabbit before he was even done with his job because he was going to slow. A rabbit is there so they have competition to get fast times. States is generally slow because PA is historically a slow state compared to others. sorry but that's the truth. Once states like cali and texas and the other hot states come out for spring our runners are never very competitive. A rabbit gives guys like Tony a chance to race at a fast pace with the simulation of competition. Because sadly there is no one to challenge him anymore at anything above an 800.

      Delete
    5. And to add, the time they ran is legitimate whether there was a rabbit or not. Invitationals are there so runners can see what they can do when they run at their fastest. An invitational during the regular season would be pointless if it was meant to be tactical.

      Delete
    6. No one to challenge Tony? He is good, but not that good. Plenty of competiton out there.

      Delete
    7. I was talking about in PA, he has consistently punked Ross and Martin and those are the only two kids who could possibly run anywhere close to him.

      Delete
    8. Brehm spanked him last year, duh, on his own track no less. Don't rule out Kyle Francis in the 1600 either, he takes it out hard and doesn't need a rabbit.

      Delete
    9. Brehm peaked his sophomore year. Maybe he'll come back his senior year and wins something but right now he's done, you can tell by his indoor season, or lack there of. Tony could have trained to peak his junior year and shit whipped brehm to space. And Francis is already slowing down. A great 800 does not mean you have a great mile. Francis has done nothing to prove he could even run 4:12 which is like chump change to the 4:07 that Tony split at nationals.

      Delete
    10. Sir:

      1. You simply cannot say when Brehm peaked until his high school career is over. He will never have a breakout year like he did last year, because he has already broken out. He may very well improve his times, though. Objectively, this weekend was a step in the right direction for him, and a glance at the results implies that he did merely what he needed to do to win. I was not at the meet, but I would bet that he sat and kicked for both races.

I've heard that Tony had a stress fracture last outdoor season, which certainly would have inhibited some of his training and racing. He split 4:10 at NBIN 2013, and probably could have produced a similar result against Ritz and Huemmler at last year's Warrior Invite (assuming that the fracture happened between NBIN and Warrior). There is no doubt that he has improved this year, but perhaps not significantly so. It's a testament to his elite status; plateauing is inevitable. It's much more likely for a 4:50 miler to drop to 4:40 than it is for Tony to drop from 4:07 to 3:57 (at least until college). We should see something similar with Brehm, but it is still a bit early to predict his ceiling.

Finally, Kyle ran a 4:19 at Lehigh, which I would equate to a 4:15 on a banked or 400m track. 4:12 is absolutely feasible for him, and potentially even sub 4:10 by the end of the year. I agree that he probably cannot beat Tony in the mile, partially because a race-off between the two is highly unlikely.

You seem to have a somewhat warped view of training and results. A runner can recover from overtraining for a year or a season; it does not necessarily mean that he/she peaked and will never run as fast. Also, a runner should probably not slow down over the course of a season barring two scenarios: injury, and a mistimed taper followed by hard training. In summary, your claims are totally unsubstantiated, and I think that we will see some fast results from Zach and Kyle over the next few weeks.

      Delete
    11. Whoever said PA isn't competitive with most States, you're flat out wrong. PA is one of the top states for track and field. PA, NJ, NY, CA, FL, and TX are some of the top states in track. It's hard to compare because our nationals is a month after our season while for most of the warmer states it's a week or two tops after their season ends so their training for it is much simpler. They also start their outdoor in feb so by Penn Relays time they're also in great shape seeing as they have a lot more training under their belt.

    15. First of all, Brehm chose not to run hard in indoor feeling the risk was greater than the reward. Second, don't discount him and say that his sophomore year was his peak year. I believe that Brehm is more than capable of having another great year when it comes to championship season. Until then, I believe that he's just doing what needs to get done for his team. It's actually evident when you see that he's been quad-ing multiple duals to help his team where they need him. His coach will focus on what's good for the team until time for championships (i.e. State College dual meet).

  11. Conestoga is looking like they could throw a nice 4x8 out there. They had 4 guys at or under 4:30 today, as well as a guy at 2:03 for the 800. I don't know if they would try that, or let Sjoreen and Marston shoot for individual medals come districts and states, but if they do, watch out. I think they have the potential for a sub 7:50 team if they go that route.

    3. It's also a 4xMile not 4x1600 and the heat factor in late june is much more significant than the heat factor in mid April. That being said, still a very impressive from Henderson. I expected it out of Russell and Stratman, but Collins and Barchet were huge PRs. Moy went a little slower than hoped, but there's still a month and a half until States, he can bounce back.

    4. The 4x1600 record is 17:04, the 4xMile record is 17:06.
So who takes the 1200 leg against James in the Penn Relays DMR? They've got 4 guys to choose from who can probably go 3:08, but who can step it up and go 3:04?

      Delete
    5. Henderson would have to go Stratman or Barchet on the 1200 because Moy, although the obvious decision, needs to run the 800. Henderson needs to have somebody on their team who can at least hang with Smart for most of the way if they have any chance of beating O'hara. They need to be within at least 3 seconds of O'hara in order to give Russell more time to catch Belfatto, because as we saw at indoor nats, Belfatto is capable of running away.

      Delete
    6. The entire O'Hara DMR team ran the race of their lives. James doesn't back down and he put them in the mix, which is what is needed to set each guy up for a big performance. If WCH can't get a 3:05 or better they'll be buried and have little chance.

  16. F Forrest. How about that 800 tomorrow night at Abington? Francis, the Upper Darby guys, the Penncrest guys and the Henderson crew. Looks like Henderson has their top 6 guys in that race. It's going to be chilly, but the wind looks to die down by the time that race goes off(9PM). Maybe, Marston and the Tatnall guys in that also. Could be the 800 of the season so far. Francis will have to go out hard to get rid of Russell and Moy. You know those guys will be closing. Could be 15-20 under 2:00.

    1. That will be an interesting race. WCH must be looking for their 800 leg in the DMR. Russell in the 800? He can barely break 60 in the 400 so don't expect too much. Francis should win big. It'll be cool to see what the Upper Darby guys can do in the open.

The 1600 has Radnors Conner Holm and Hanson Watson going against WCE Diestelow and Kennett's Kienzle All should mid 4:20's. James Hare in the 3200 should lead a few to District qualifying times. Avon Grove looks like they could throw together a nice 4x800

  20. How about Domenic Peretta of Beaver Falls? The AA sophomore dropped solo efforts of 4:24 and 1:56 at a tiny meet in Beaver County. Looking like a huge stud. http://pa.milesplit.com/meets/159952/results/295360
