Meet Results 1/25

Kevin Dare Results have been posted so here go the analysis (although I'll leave the Logue and Cather bit up).

Allie Wilson won the Mile by 5 seconds in a very strong time of 5:08, which I thought she would run. Dominating this field is impressive, but the real question is what race does she run knowing 4-6 girls can go sub 5:00. Grace Galligan of Springfield Delco surprised with a second place finish in 5:13.84 as she finished over 3rd place Olivia Sargent and, 4th Place Elizabeth Morris, and 5th place Terri turner who were all under 2 seconds behind. Strong race overall as 11 girls went under the SQS.

Logue and Cather brought the HEAT in the open 800! Cather took it out in 55.8 and Louge was pretty close on him in 56.2. Cather continued to lead going into the bell lap at 1:24.7 to Louge's 1:25.1. Logue brought on a massive kick passing Cather for the win with a PA #1 clocking of 1:53.67 to Cather's 1:54.05. These boys are in sick shape right now and I'm super impressed. Logue is back in the 800 and is killin it.

Behind the next PA guy was Kyle Adam’s placing 4th in 1:58.07. He’s looking really strong and State College’s 4x8 is going to be very scary at states, even on the double (7:57 4x8!). Also going under two was Joe Sullivan (MB – 1:59.23), Brian Piscitelli (NP – 1:59.48), and Ryan Myers (McCaskey – 1:59.90). Right on the boarder were 4 more in Mitch Endress (Altoona – 2:00.02), Matt Schulberger (Pennridge – 2:00.10), Joseph LeConey (NP – 2:00.47), and Andrew Miller (Wyomissing). I love the NP relays they’re got 4 fantastic 800 runners, but Tung and Grace have range. Also Wyomissing could probably put together a strong relay with their pieces. Sullivan doesn’t have a relay squad this year, but he’s been quite successful in the 800 showing he could be a threat. I also like Adam’s to double.

The girls 3k was won by Mady Clahane in a PA #2 time of 10:05! A really fantastic race for her.

Behind Clahane was PB’s Hannah Molloy running 10:22 which is a nice comeback for her after a rough XC ending and freshman stud Tate Dawsone was very solid in 10:45 for 3rd.

The boys 3k turned into quite a battle between Marston, Reilly, and Kardish! Kardish took the lead late and won in a swift time of 8:47.83! Patrick Reilly didn't have the kick at the end finishing up in 8:53.94. Marston grabbed the SQS running 8:57.58. He's made some really great strides this season and I think he'll only get better. Kardish has had an up and down season, but this is a fantastic race, almost as breakout-ish as Colwell's last season. I'm glad he's found the right distance. Hopefully he can pop another one of these in the low 8:42's by states. Reilly had an off day, but he's clearly in strong shape. I think mid to high 8:40's at states would be really great for him. Cole Nissley from LD had a nice result of 9:00.88, but that misses the SQS, although I have no doubt he'd get a bid in. Another big surprise of the day came from sophomore Jack DiCinto of Wyomissing as he ran 9:02.44. He ran a fantastic race at regionals (he won the sophomore race in 17:31) and clearly he is ready to take it to the next level this track season. I doubt he'll get into states with that time, but I really love if he gets in. Ari Bortman (so-PB) ran 9:07 for 5th which is a breakout race for him. PB is so strong on the track.

Now we're waiting for those 4x8's! Altoona or State College?

TFCAofGP Meet #6 Division 1

In the 800m Kyle Francis broke the Meet record in a time of 1:59.86 which gets him an SQS. Running that fast on Glen Mills' track is very impressive. I think he's going to be a real threat in the Mile come the state meet, but he broke Jason Weller's record, that's no joke. But right behind him was Eli Mercado running 2:00.30! He's having a true breakout year and is getting into really strong shape right now. It seems as though the 800 is his perfect distance and at states if he can hold on to a solid pace I think he's got a real shot at medalling, especially after this weekend. Fitzgerald didn't have a stellar meet running 2:03 for 3rd place, but that shows how slow this track is. He ran a great double last weekend and I have no doubt he'll split ~1:58 at states. XC studs Fowler and Brown got some speed in, both running 2:08.

Bensalem and CR North rivalry showed in the Mile with a very tactical race out of Ramirez and Griswold with Ramirez taking the win in 4:44.96 outleaning Griswold by .02 seconds. Nothing too fast, but both of them have run really solid splits this year and I think they’ll be ready to go to help relays in the next few weeks.

Nothing big in the 3k either with Steve Hanna of CR South winning in 9:36, a time which is 12 seconds slower than he raced in December. He is a sit and kick kinda dude so I’m not shocked he didn’t kill it.

There was no DMR run and the 4x8’s weren’t too fast as some ‘B’ teams ran for most squads with CBE (8:39) winning over UD (8:42).

TFCAofGP Meet #6 Division II
Matt Moore of Marple Newtown ran a solid race in 2:04 beating an up and coming Brendan Stec from Malvern Prep. Remember that a 1:53 guy just barely went under two and Fitzgerald who split 2 flat went 2:03. I would say Moore has a shot at making states if he gets into a good heat at the Meet of Champions.

Julian Degroot-Lutzner from Masterman opened his season with a big win over Hare and Zatlin. We don't usually see too much from Masterman, but they had a very good XC team this year and I would love to see them get a 4x8 or DMR SQS, but it would most likely be very close.

Hoey opened his 3k season up with a fantastic 9:08, just a second off the MR by Mike Bilotta from a few years ago. He beat Willig who ran 9:26 (this is a guy who just ran mid 9:06 on the double last weekend) and Waltz (WCH) was 9:36. That's how slow this track is. Hoey could have easily gone low 8:50's at Lehigh if not dipping into the 8:40's. This kid is on fire, but I don't think we'll see him run another 3k, since the Mile to DMR Mile double seems to be their plan.

Henderson through together a solid 4x8 running 8:28 for the win. I'd love to know who was on that relay team, but that's a nice turnout after some great racing last weekend.

More to come as the day continues, so keep checking in! The Kevin Dare results will be posted at the top of the page!

  1. A lot of teams and individuals were training through the meet today. DWest, Henderson, GV, DEast (?), and guys like Hoey and Cummings were all doing extra before or after today's meet. So a lot of them were working with dead legs

    1. Regardless, you almost never see fast times at Glen Mills. It's like running in the cafeteria. I'd have to think that for most coaches the expectations are low and it's another excuse for training.

    2. So now they're blaming the track.

    3. Add to ^^^that list Penncrest and Marple Newtown, basically any distance team that was there

    4. I only mentioned that to show how slow and unimportant Glenn Mills is. People don't take it seriously or at least as seriously. No ones blaming the track. It's just a matter of how much effort people are actually giving

  2. Forrest, are you really suggesting Glen Mills track is up to 20 seconds slower for a 3000 than Lehigh? That's like saying the event runs an extra 120 meters or so, which basically asserts that their track is really 208 meters instead of 200. If that's true than the Francis 800 was really like a low 1:57 since he ran further. Someone should measure it.

    1. Good point @ Glen Mills. It is definitely a hell of a lot slower than a banked Penn State track. No way Kardish beats Hoey in a head-to-head on any track.

    2. Glen Mills' track is not long, ya goon, it's just a terrible surface (and flat). No doubt Francis is in at least 1:57 shape on a banked track, or maybe even on a nicer flat track.

In response to the second poster, that may be true about Hoey v. Kardish, but Hoey's prospects look better in the Mile at the moment, considering he is one of 2 guys sub 4:20 (I think, I don't have a penntrack subscription).

    3. Hoey will win the mile. His dad went 1:48 so he's got the speed.

  5. 800 must have been something but seriously doubt either of these guys will run that fast again this indoor season. Think they blew their wad a little early.

    1. Yes, I run Cather and his "wad" was definitely blown after today.

  6. I have to agree but it's good to see them being so competitive. With 5 weeks until states, my money's on Wiseman or Francis in the 800.
Where are the results for the meet?

    1. Francis won't even run the 800. It's a toss up between Logue, Cather and Wiseman at this point.

    3. Of course Hoey, lets not forget his dad has 1:48 speed, so yeah, there's that.

    3. Clearly you have never run at Glenn Mills

    4. Figure a Glen Mills 800 is 3 to 4 seconds slower than a Lehigh 800.

    5. They probably just ran for the win to qualify for MOC, they already have the SQL. Or they fell out of shape.

    6. The track is literally a basketball court surface. It isnt a track, people who dont run there do not understand how horrible it is to race in that godforsaken building.

    7. Everyone who led a distance race there looked like they were running for places, except Hoey. In the 800 and mile, as well as the 4x8 and DMR, the runners looked like they were sitting and kicking. The MN guys looked like they were controlling their races from start to finish, and the 4x8s definitely did not appear to be trying to get great times

  9. Sorry, just would like to point out an incorrect statistic, Jack DiCintio won the Footlocker sophomore race in 16:31, not, as the article states, 17:31.

  10. First off all, more impressive than anything else this weekend: TESSA BARRETT. She broke the state record when the next closest runner was a minute and 25 seconds behind her and on a flat track. Oh yeah, also in flats. Come the State meet when Courtney Smith and Maddy Clahane will be on her for the first 1.25 miles... fast time.

Thought Olivia Sargent would be in 5:05 shape, but she had a late start due to XC Nationals, I'll wait and see at States what she's capable of. I may be expecting too much from her because of who her sister is, but she's definitely talented.

O'Hara's DMR ran exactly what I expected they could. If they play it smart and all run the DMR fresh, they have a shot at a State title. SH won’t run the DMR when the 4x800 is essentially theirs for the taking. No one has shown that they even have 2 sub 2:20's on the relay, SH has 3 on the relay. Abby Kennedy ran a 5:22 so if she can just manage a 2:20 fresh, I think SH wins it with Miller/Wilson on the double.

Garnet Valley just isn’t made for the DMR. I thought they could, but it's obvious they can't. They have a great anchor/lead off in Keyser/McGroarty and a few other okay pieces, I say they go 4x800 and get a top 5 spot with Keyser and McGroarty off the double in the open 8.

The opposite for Great Valley. They should go DMR. Their 800 leg ran pretty poorly at Yale, but lead off and anchor had good race. With a solid race outta their 800 leg, that's a 12:10 (solid being if she just ran what she did open the very next day. Her indoor PR is also 7 seconds faster than what she ran open). Come States, I think they can be in the lead and Claffey would just have to hold off Amy Kelly. Wiith a lead, I don't see how she couldn't do that.

Great 800's by Sheva and Turner and Turner doubling a 5:15 mile as well (she also ran the 4x2 and 4x4). Both of these girls can bring it come States. Sheva has ran so impressively these last few weeks. Her 2:15 was a second and a half off her outdoor PR. State college also showing they have some relay potential lately with some solid open 800's/Miles.

Tate Dawson definitely let down with that 10:50, but Hannah Molloy ran a great 10:20! Forrest, I think you meant Maddie Sauer when you were saying Molloy had a rough XC season, she had a great one! Sauer was the injured one. Her mile wasn't too hot and I'm going to assume neither was her 800. Clahane's 10:05 is also impressive. Honestly, if the 3k record was still 9:47, I'd say four girls would break it, which is just showing how stacked the girls 3k is.

    Boys...

Logue and Cather had a GREAT battle and it ended just how I expected; Logue putting on the kick with 200 to go. Great job by both though, they're in amazing shape at this point. We may see some 1:51 high/1:52 low at the State meet out of these two. Great double on the 4x800 getting a PA #1. Cather and Adams will take this 4x800 to a top 3 spot at States.

Kyle Francis running 1:59 at Glen Mills is incredible. This track is honestly one of the slowest tracks and running sub 2 is no joke. At lehigh, i'd place him at 1:57 mid, assuming he ran exactly the same with the same competition.

O'Hara ran a great 4x800! Splits? Penncrest also ran a solid 4x800, they are so good every year at middle distance events, it really speaks highly of their coaches, same deal with North Penn. They had some solid relays and open performances, come states I think they will all save for the relay and earn a solid medal spot.

Christian Kardish had a great breakout 3k race, I hope to see him in that instead of the mile. Andrew Marston also ran a great race. He's improving every meet, but he's also running the 3k/3200 a lot, which worries me.

No idea why Hoey ran the 3k at a Glen Mills meet, but boy was that time smokin' fast. If he runs it at Moc I don't see how he doesn't go sub 8:48, probably winning it and breaking the record.

    1. Berardi should not have run the mile leg for Garnet Valley. They has a 2 second lead going into the final leg. She is a much better 800/1200 runner and should have switched with McGroarty to run this. McGroarty ran around 5:22 for a mile practically a month ago. Although I don't think they are as good as O'Hara, 12:41 doesn't so them justice. Solid stuff as well from the Kevin Dare Invitational. Pretty nice to see at this point in the season from PA.

  11. Don't see Hoey running the 3K. I think his time translates to 8:53 at Lehigh. Kelly and Bilotta both ran slightly faster two years ago, but only ran low 8:50s at MOC. Hoey is much more competitive at the mile.

Interesting to note that at this date, we only have 9 runners who have run SQS in the 3000 and 6 teams who have hit SQS at the DMR. While we will certainly pick up more at Track Classic, MOC and whenever TSTA finally runs a meet, looks like both standards will be relaxed to file out one heat at states. (as for other distance races, we have 24 qualifiers at the mile, 19 at the 800, and 17 at the 4x800)

    5. Yeah Hoey is great and all but he's not winning anything at states this year. Yeah he's a phenom sophomore and he'll probably kill the rest of PA next year, Kevin James will be his big competition on the track, but he hasn't shown any signs of being capable of beating Russell or other athletes like Ross Wilson at their respective events. He can't touch Logue or Cather in the 800. He was only 3-4 seconds behind Russell in the mile at Yale because he chose to opt out of his teams DMR so he could be fresh for the mile. Put him in that relay and he would have been 2-3 seconds slower. His best chance at a state medal is in the 3k because Russell isnt running it. Im not arguing how amazing he'll be in his junior or senior year but we shouldn't over hype the sophomore, especially while we have Russell who's competing at National Caliber meets, for good reason.

  13. I've heard that you shouldn't run too many 3k's or 3200's in a track season. What about the mile? Can you overdo it racing too many big races in that event as well?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The mile is short enough to where you can run it every meet and be okay. As long as you take adequate breaks between seasons you shouldn't fizzle out by the end of the season from running the mile. The 3k/3200 is a lot of the mental aspect as well as the physical aspect. Some can get past it, but most can't.

    2. That don't run too many 3k's is a farce. That's like telling XC runners you can only do three or four races a year. If the 3200 is your race, run it.

    2. Hey, I was all about keeping it boys until other people started bringing girls into the equation. I stopped posting about girls all together and then other people, including the people that run the blog, started posting girls results. You don't have to read the analysis, you can literally skip down to where I write "Boys..." People often comment on the posts, more often about the girls side than the boys. I will not bring up another post about girls again, until someone else brings them up... then I'll talk about it. Fair? Cool. Peace, Anon.

    3. Rarely do I see comments about the girls following one of your posts. It's pretty much exclusively about guys.
RTJ, you can write about whatever you want. I used to scan right through the girl stuff but now I actually read it. PA girls are killin' it this year and I thank you for enlightening me. Point is write what you want and people will read what they want. No harm in that.

    4. I agree with this post ^^^. The PA girls have been killing it, RTJ covers it well and if you're not that interested, just scan or skip it. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Unionville girls DMR does against top competition.
