Weekend Results 1-11-14

In the TFCAof GP Meet #4 we once again saw a strong showing from North Penn’s 4x8 as they ran 8:14 for the win, helping bring Pennridge and CR South to the SQS as both squads went 8:19. I’d love to know how the race went, but I’m imaging Joe Logue beating out Wiseman on the anchor leg with great splits from both of them. As I’ve said before I think CR South has a ton of potential in the 4x8 or DMR. Pennridge usually puts together solid relays each year and Logue is a strong doubler. North Penn is really on a roll however and continually has put up strong results. It’s only early January though, so this squad will need to keep improving week by week and if they do, they have a great shot at top 4/5 in the 4x8.

One young man on a roll is Brendan Bilotta. He continued his hot streak winning the open 800m in 2:00.46 which just beat out Dtown East’s Adam Carcella (2:00.94). Earlier in the year a friend asked me if anyone had ever qualified for states from the 400m-the 3k indoors. After looking through some results the one man I thought was capable, Wade Endress, hadn’t done it. Bilotta has not qualified 800, Mile, and 3k in consecutive weeks (2:00.73 on a flat track is the SQS), which I find extraordinarily impressive. The 400m mark of 51.83 seems like it’d be tough for him and I doubt he’d race it, but the guy’s got some range and I really think he’ll be a threat in the 3k. The La Salle coaches do a great job of peaking runners well, so I think he’ll improve.

But let’s talk about Carcella for a bit. He was an 18:45 5k runners and barely a sub 5 miler last season, but he must have run some solid splits, otherwise this 2 flat is really coming out of left field. Liam McLaughlin is a 1:58 guy for them and if they have just one more runner hit a quick time this team could do some real damage in the 4x8 with Billy Caldwell on the anchor leg. They showed really strong relay potential today in the DMR winning in a new state lead of 10:55. Runners are not allowed to double at these TFCA meet’s, so they must have put something strong together and Caldwell probably split ~4:30 (give or take 5 seconds). If anyone has splits from that team, I’d love to see them!

Also note quickly that LaSalle went 11:15 without Bilotta. With him, in a fast race I think this team could get themselves under 10:50.

In the Mile Pat Hopkins of Methacton looked strong as he outkicked Ryan Grace who’s had a really strong season so far. Both of them missed the SQS as they ran 4:33. David Fowler opened his season with a 4:40 for 3rd place. The state medalist has never been a huge track guy, but I would like to see him break 9 in the 3k. Andrew Hanna of CR South didn’t look great as he ran 4:48. Might have gotten a bit nicked up, but it’s quite surprising.
Out in Division II Carlie Hoyt showed some early speed running 53.69 in the 400m dash to place 4th overall. He’s a strong 800m running and will be a key piece in Penn Charter relays.
Cooper from Upper Merion had a strong race against Holm or Radnor as the two tied on the official results both running 1:59.98! It’s really great to see these two boys rolling in the 800 after strong XC seasons. Eric Diewstelow is coming off injury and ran 2:07.8 as a rust buster, but good to see him back, but as for Jonathan Perlman that man needs to figure out his track game, cause running 2:06.16 isn’t his race for a sub 16 5k guy.

Chris Cummings continues to race solidly as he won the Mile over McDevitt in a 4:33.93 effort. That’s not bad speed for Cummings who I see as far more of a distance guy, as in he’ll be running 10k in college. McDevitt seems to be getting back into solid shape as well. In 3rd was a 4:21 man James Hare of Marple Newtown who will need to step up his game for later in the season because 4:42 isn’t going to cut it for his type of talent.

In the 3k I really liked the solo effort of Mason from Penn Charter. He’s another strong piece to a potential DMR squad with Szuhaj. Watson Hanson placed 4th overall and it seems that the lower distance races are more for him. I’d like to see that Radnor DMR give it another shot next month.
On the relay side I was very happy about Malvern Prep’s 8:16 SQS time without McDevitt. I think the DMR is ideal for this team, but I’m sure we saw a strong split from Hoey.

At the Lavino relays I’m always excited for PA guys to tear up a NJ track and it’s a fun meet with a great atmosphere. PA ran some strong times as well lead by Pennsbury’s victory in the 4x800m running 8:10.07. Charles Snorweah is listed on the team as is Matt Mulvaney. I’m sure O’Connell and Sauer ran some great splits, but I’m interested to see how Snorweah handled moving up in distance. He’s a shorter guy, but that 48 speed must translate to at least a 2:05 split. Not a bad race from Bensalem either as they ran 8:28, which isn’t all that bad. I think they’ll be able to get a DMR or 4x8 SQS by the end of the season when Francis is an animal of an anchor.

The 4x4 was dominated by PA squads with CB East coming up with a big win in 3:29 with Bensalem and Pennsbury breathing down their necks. Both squads were 3:30, but Pennsbury did it with a ‘B’ squad that didn’t have Sauer, O’Connell, or Snorweah, boy are they deep!

Wow, I saw this result and I’m actually fairly shocked that Council Rock North pulled out a victory in the DMR running 10:45. I knew this squad had a ton of potential going into the season, but Wilson has only run two workouts and he must have split fast on the anchor, while Simmons hasn’t shown much in the Mile, and I wasn’t sure how the 1200m leg would go for him. Sadly we won’t see this team run at the state meet or Penn Relays due to Wilson’s championship dreams.

The winning reign had to come to an end for PA guys in the 1600m Sprint Medley, but CB West ran very well in a second place effort of 3:43. Rock Fortna is really becoming a stud for this team.
Not too much hoping out at the Franklin and Marshall HS Meet #2, but in the 3k we saw some unexpected names with Patrick Reilly winning in 9:08.47 and it’s great to see him back and racing! Kyle Shinn placed second in a 9:21 effort. I hope to see Reilly at the Kevin Dare invitational running something fast in either the 3k or Mile. He didn’t have a great end of his XC season for the second year in a row, but the man is a District 3 champion.

The PCL Regular Season Meet’s began this weekend with a strong showing from O’Hara in the Mile as Belfatto grabbed the win in 4:28 and Smart was second in 4:33. Nothing too spectacular for the guys, but it’s early on and I know they’ll be ready to roll in Febuary.

  2. Ugh, that's terrible to hear Dave! Hope you recover quickly!

On another note: Simmon's split 3:18 for 1200 and Wilson ran 4:24 on the Mile leg for CRN

    1. also, Logue got the baton 5-10 meters behind Wiseman and passed with 100 to go for the win. No idea what the split was but must have been fast for Wiseman to get outkicked.

  6. Good do see Diestelow coming back. He was injured and had mono at the end of XC. He just needs to get healthy again because wce needs him for any kind of DMR.

  8. Adam Carcella was hurt for all of outdoor last year and the beginning of cross this year with knee problems. He split around a 2:05 last year at indoor states so this wasn't a big surprise to me. He is a great kid in great shape. D-East is not a team to mess with McLaughlin and Caldwell. Caldwell is looking really strong and ready to roll. I think he will be around 4:20 by the end of indoor. The D-East team is going to yale this weekend so we can see what they can do there.

  9. Kyle Francis could do It. The kid has split 49 point, 1:51 point, 4:16, and is a 15:47 5k guy. He is a monster. He could get every state time from 400-3k plus 4x4, 4x8, and DMR. Crazy stuff

    2. Yeah I was extraordinarily impressed by that mark from Deluca. He was definently disappointed after regionals and it's translated well early on. He is a 9:13 3200m guy, so I'm not too surprised. I really hope he gets into a competitive race before states, but by mid February he should be in mid to low 8:30 shape by the looks of it.

      Also to note:
Dylin Wilhoite opened his season with a big 800 win running 2:01.79 in the Youngstown State University HS Meet. The 3 second win showed his end of race strength, and I think he’ll be a strong medal contender this season.

Patrick Miller of Kiski opened in 4:41 and will be an integral part of a DMR squad that could qualify for states. He’ll need to make some improvements, but Kiski runners peak well.

  11. That 3k by Deluca is quite impressive. The most impressive 3k I've seen in a while, especially because he ran it alone. Depending on how hard he took the last mile, he has room to drop a lot of time. I guess we will see what Russell/Barchet/Hoey will throw down at Yale.

Glad someone brought up Bilotta's success this season. I've been reading on my phone and not really posting too much, but the kid has been on quite the streak. He's made States in the 800 through 3k and I'm sure they will run a stacked 4x8/DMR sometime and make it. He definitely won't make the 400, but it's still impressive nonetheless.

I'm not sure if someone answered this or not, but did Cummings take a break after regionals run?

  12. There will always be haters, no matter who you are and what you do. Cummings has nothing to prove-he is a talented runner. I think he took a lot of heat in XC because he started so strong and many were accusing WCE of running insane miles early in the summer. I think that's partially true as we've seen it happen a few years now. I am not a WCE fan particularly, but Cummngs is great-his coach? Maybe not so much.

    1. What kind of mileage were they doing? 60? That's a lot but not insane. Cummings 3000 is just as impressive than Deluca's, How can someone be impressed with one and not the other, unless they're a hater of that team..

      Delete
    2. Deluca ran 6 seconds faster on a slower track meet in his first indoor race ever. Both good performances but 8:44 is better than 8:50.

BTW, why did Cummings raise his hand and scream when he passed Marsden with 4 laps to go in the DMR last night? Not very classy.

      Delete
    3. I saw that too. He was well past Marston when he did it, he opened up about a 5 second lead in half a lap. But with 2 1/2 laps to go it didn't make any sense. It actually wouldn't have made any sense with 2 1/2 feet to go either.

      Delete
    4. Yeah during Cummings 8:50 at Lehigh he started clapping going into the final lap. He had a huge lead but seriously no need to be cocky about a win in a meet that barely means anything.

      Delete
    5. Cummings has been doing that since xc. He doesn't do it at others, it looks more like a mental wake up call for himself. Anybody who has ever talked to him knows that he's not that kind of guy.

      Delete
    6. The Lehigh meet was important to Cummings and his team, he was probably trying to get his SQL in the 3000 out of the way early. That frees him up and creates flexibility for relays or the mile.

Anyone who's spent all day at an indoor meet knows there's a huge difference in crowd support with say, the 4 x 200 which can electrify the crowd and the 3000 which usually has crowd rumblings of 'how many laps is this?' and 'who is in the lead?'. Usually the only crowd support is limited to coaches or teammates strategically placed to call out splits and scream encouragement. So if Cummings or anyone needs to make a gesture to stay fired up in that race at that meet, it's certainly understandable.

  13. Courtney Smith opened up her season with a fantastic PA #2 time of 5:13.49 winning by 12 seconds. No surprises here from the All-American. It’s not extraordinarily fast, but it’s her opener and it was at a smaller meet.
Even more impressive she doubled back for their DMR team which ran an incredible 12:27.21, which puts them at a new PA #1. Now the question must be asked: Will Unionville run a hot DMR at states? Will we see Courtney Smith give up potential individual gold by racing the Mile and doubling back as an anchor? I wouldn’t be too surprised. We’ll have to wait and see if she runs the 3k soon, but it’s clear he team can compete with SH/Pennsbury in the DMR.
In the boys open 800m we didn’t see anything too impressive, but I like Howard and Wheeler out of Avon Grove helping out their team’s relays and bringing competition for the 4x8/DMR positions since they have a strong anchor in Josh Smith (both runners ran 2:04 for 1st and 3rd). TV runners Geary and Lizins also ran pretty solid putting up 2:04 and 2:06 efforts alike. They’ve got a deep young team and hopefully they have a breakout star soon.
Paul Power gets another win in the Mile with a decent time of 4:35. He’s got some really solid wins this season, but he needs to grab that SQS soon. Kienzle showed better speed than I expected hitting 4:37, and I’d love to see him go sub 9 this season, even if it’s a long shot. Josh Smith placed 3rd in 4:38.29. He was a beast of an XC runner who was a big breakout star for Avon Grove. He’ll need to do big things for their relays if they’re going to contend for medals.
WCE ran 10:59 in the DMR to slightly improve their time; this team is so close to getting to time and I really hope they can grab it at MoC’s. Conestoga put out a solid squad of 11:08. They’ll need to translate the XC strength into track success, but I have a feeling it won’t be there this indoor season. While the Avon Grove boys got a nice double in running 11:34. In the relays I was also happy to see GV going after the time as they were seeded at 8:18, although they hit 8:28 with no competition. I think they’d be a better DMR team, but it was probably a speed workout before Yale, if they’re going up again this season.
Last but not least, I liked DTE’s 3:32.82 in the 4x4, since none of their distance guys ran, I’d have to imagine some of them were in this race. If not, then this team could have a sprinter move up to the 800m to finish off a strong relay. I think they’ve got some great 4x8 potential.

    1. I believe she anchored that DMR in 5:08. That's two really nice miles pretty much on her own at an average meet.

    2. Caldwell split 52.2. Looked really smooth. The other guys ran 53. They're quick. They're running 4 x 8 vs. Tatnall and WCH on Friday at Yale. Should be a good race.

    3. I honestly expected Smith to go faster than 5:13 and their DMR to go faster than 12:27. Depending on who was actually in it, this could change slightly, but I'm going to assume they went hot. I'll wait until her first 3k before I think more into her fitness level. If anyone has those splits, that would be nice.

To Unionville running a hot relay at States, highly doubtful. They will probably run a B squad and have Young anchor if she chooses the mile. Olivia Young, Emily Fisher (depending on her health), and Courtney Smith can all medal in open events at States if they run them, so they wouldn't make two of them give up the 3k for the relay, especially when Smith has a shot at gold. If she gives up the 3k to run the DMR that's basically her saying she doesn't think she can beat Barrett and as an athlete as talented as her, I don't think she'll allow herself to just give up. I'm guessing Smith/Fisher run the 3k and Young decides depending on what her other teammates qualify for. Last year she dropped a 10:48 in early May, but went mile to let Anne Birkenmaier run the 3k. We will see 3 Unionville girls running the 3k... but which ones is the question. I hope it's Smith/Young/Fisher, but we will see.

I believe that if Mount Lebo ran a hot DMR they would easily be the State champs. Hunsberger, Potts, and Gordon are solid pieces and they have a 59 400 runner. I think they could win whether Potts led off or anchored and Hunsberger did the other. They won't run hot however, which is unfortunate. Hopefully at nationals we see them run the DMR/4xMile because I think they could go all-american in both.

      Delete
    11. You bring up an interesting point. The DMR could be at one of it's all time lows this year. Let's assume Henderson and Malvern Prep qualify a DMR at Yale. Henderson doesn't usually go stacked DMR at states. Most likely, Barchet in 3k and Tony in Mile (or both mile/3k). CRN will have Wilson in the 3k. North Penn will most likely go 4x800 as I predict Pennsbury and Pennridge will as well. I think DTE is going to have a nasty 4x8 and could chose that over DMR which is a very realistic possibility. Then there's WCE whom could have Cummings in the 3k. He could always try to double back from that but that doesn't always go so well. Thinking about it now, I don't think he will....then there's Ohara. They could very well do DMR and it could be a very dangerous DMR. Overall, this is what you end up with (based off of stats from Penntrack and own predictions)...

      1. Ohara
      2. Malvern Prep
      3. WCE
      4. CRS
      5. Radnor
      6. Great Valley
      7. Holy Ghost
      8. Penn Charter

I doubt we're gonna see much out of western PA. Altoona could decide to try out DMR but with a state leading 8:06 4x8 they'll stick with that. There are a lot of teams with excellent 4x8's that could very well see a DMR field with less competition and opt for DMR over 4x8. We'll just have to wait and see.

  18. Ok, this will be one of those posts that puts me back in the crazy category but what the heck. It’s just food for thought, and I’m sure it’s already been thought about where it counts, but I’m putting it out there because it’s fun for discussion.

Let’s just suppose WCH is seriously considering the state indoor title (as they should be!) The last three years it’s taken 41, 44 and 40 points to win it all. Last year I said I wouldn’t double Russell in the mile/3000 because the competition is so solid there’s a great chance of disappointment in both so better to focus on one or the other. But this year, I’d have him do them both for the team. If he could take say 3rd in both events (or equivalent combination), that’s 12 points. Then double Moy in the mile and 800, let’s say he takes a 5th and 4th, that’s 9 more points, then Barchet in the 3000, say he take 4th for 5 points. Then there’s Stratman, Collins, Knapp (who has a big potential upside), Waltz and who knows who else may develop like Barchet Jr or Swart. So let’s just say one of them can take 6th in some individual event for another 3 points. Now they’re at 29 points going into the relays. WCH’s biggest strength is their strength. Russell can do a triple and be effective, so he’s available for a DMR that would include at least Barchet off the 3000 and say Collins and a 400 guy. That leaves Moy, Stratman, Knapp and Waltz for the 4x800, and a 2nd and 3rd place finish needed to be right there for it all. Yeah, it’s asking a lot of Russell and Moy, but it’s possible. And either of them is capable of gold in an individual event, as is Barchet. And who knows where Knapp could be after a breakthrough XC season or whether Stratman improve off his 4:19 from last year.

I don’t know if the State title has ever gone to a “distance” team, typically it’s the teams with great sprinters who can cover more events, both on the track and in the jumps, but it’d be nice to see that WCH depth pay off.

If nothing else, it'd be a great goal for them. Somebody should be scouring that school for a sprinter, shot putter, pole vault or jumper!

    2. I thought it was the individual who couldn’t run both the 4x800 and DMR, not the team. So with hindsight, it was a dumb post, but correctable (or made dumber). Russell needs 14 points out of the mile/3000, Moy 10 out of the mile/800, Barchet, Knapp, and/or Stratman to take a combined 9 points out of the individual events and then a win in the DMR. 43 points might do it, though it’s a long shot.

    3. Nice post. I would include Cheltenham, Pennsbury and altoona in the mix. Possible points: Pennsbury: 60, 400, hurdle, 4x2, 4x4. I read that Webb maybe injured but if not, you can add 4x8 or DMR. For Chel: 55, 200, 400 or 800 (lewis), hurdle, 2x2, 4x4. Altonna: 60, 200 4x2, 4x4, 4x8

    4. At first I thought that was a stupid rule that a team could only run one of the 4x800 or DMR, but then I thought about it some more and it kind of made sense. The DMR isn't a traditional championship meet event so to allow participation in both would be an advantage to a distances team. But then I thought about even some more and realized what a huge advantage sprinters have since their races are shorter and recovery is much easier so they can do more events at close to 100% plus sprinters by nature are typically better at long and triple jump too, so I concluded it's total bullcrud and teams should be allowed to do both or else the same rule should apply to the 4x200 and 4x400. WCH is getting hosed by that rule.

    5. Sprint teams have always had the advantage. It has as much to do with saving time as it does with the excitement and power of the fast race. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

    6. Can you imagine if every team who qualified both a DMR and 4x8 ran both, with the same four guys? The meet would go one forever, and the quality of the race would go down because you have either people doubling/tripling or you have slower legs in the race and you have teams who will run nowhere near the entry standard.

It is sad for teams like WCH, O'Hara, and others who could field both teams competitively will relatively fresh legs, but I think that the rule is probably for the betterment of the meet.

It's different for sprinters because a sprinter can much more easily double off the 200 to run 4x2 and 4x4 than it is for a distance runner to double or triple. Track is sprint/jump oriented. It's a fact of life. You generally need a star sprinter to win a championship. Just look at how close Zaza made the indoor title for Garnet Valley. He scored about 30 points just by himself

    7. How would the meet go on forever? Each team still only gets one entry.

    8. Another good point to make is that distance teams already have XC, which is 100% distance oriented

    9. XC is a different sport from indoor track. There's no denying sprint teams have a huge advantage. Wasn't there a sprinter in the 80's or 90's who single handedly took states for his school? William Reed or Clinton something or other?

    10. Leroy burrell did it. He won the 100, 200, LJ and TJ. 40 points took it all outdoors. Some other sprinters have probably done it too, it's a joke how meets favor sprinters.

  19. Courtney Smith is an elite runner and with that you have elite expectations. However, I just realized that she probably wasn't going all out, why would she? Then her double was again her running hard, but definitely not all out since they killed the competition, again. I want to see her in a fast 3k to see what she's got.

I feel for Cummings getting left out of the fast 3k. He soloed a 3k in 8:50 and doesn't make the championship heat? 8:40 usually wins it and he is only 10 seconds behind, on a flat track, with flats, and no competition. Very sorry and I hope he can win out of the slow heat.

WCH going all in for the mile? I take that as one of two things: They're going to run a 3k/3200 on a banked track some time before the season ends or only Russell/Barchet are running it.

RJJL's post wasn't dumb, he has a point; WCH could go for the State title. Who else at this point shows the depth to do it? Two things are flawed with that theory though. 1. When is the last time a purely distance squad won Indoor States and 2. You can't run the DMR and 4x800, you have to choose, so they can't medal in both.

The DMR always looks weak at this point of the season, it's always speculation of who can run a fast one, but around late Jan/early Feb we get a good idea. We will see in the coming weeks who runs DMR and 4x800.

O'Hara could have a nasty DMR, but will they? Kevin James pulled off a fantastic double last season at PCL's and ran something around 8:54/4:22. With being a year stronger and at States, I can see that double being 8:38/4:18. Hopefully that double was with the mile first and not the 3k like it would be at States. If they don't, then he could run the mile, Belfatto/Smart run the 800, then they team up for the 4x800 or DMR. I can honestly see them winning either if stacked. The DMR is definitely their best shot though.

Where are the rest of the Yale heat sheets? I can only go to the end of the boys' mile championship.

    1. I've seen Courtney Smith throttle back to coach a teammate through to the end. Wasn't at the Ursinus meet so don't know for sure but she had no reason to go hard. Competition looked weak on both male & female sides.
Didn't WCH run the 4x8 at States last year? Trying to recall when they ran a dmr last? Their lack of sprinters/field event guys makes a run for the Indoor title a loooong shot. It's almost always a shoo-in that the teams with the sprinters win it all. Seems like having a great distance program is a handicap for team titles.

    2. Look at ACCEPT ENTRIES for listing of relay teams

    3. Best bet WCH has at winning states i think is if they stack a 4x8 at the end. Stratman-Knapp-Russell-Moy. I know Russell isn't one for the 800 but if he can run 4:11 I think he can handle a 800. However, it would most likely be Russell's and Moy's third event so it would be asking a lot of them. I think they would get it done for their team if it meant the title though.

    2. Not to promote this or anything, but Don Rich is asking for a writer to recap meets and what not. You might wanna give this a shot, Forrest. It's probably a solid resume booster and all you'd have to do is copy paste what you're writing on the blog... just onto penntrack. They'll get a better team and you'll potentially make money and "professional website author" to throw on your resume.

    3. Don’t do it Forrest! Don’t let you the integrity of your journalism be tarnished by corporate America! It’s the underground nature of this blog that makes it so great. Don’t sell your dignity out to the man just yet! That site has its purpose and audience and it’s different than what you have here. Etrain said in his Brett Farve post that he’d like to write for them some day so now would be a great time for him to do it, he’d be great, as would you when the time is right. But the two sites need to stay independent! If you do move on at least pass the torch!

    4. Hey guys, I'm not going to lie, I would love to work for Penntrack as an 'Analyzer," but not to worry, I do not believe that will come to fruition. Many of those at PennTrack despise both Etrain and I for our efforts and we have very different views. I see PennTrack as a website such as NFL.com where they provide information, while this site is more like ESPN.com in that it has analysis and a community of commenter.

I would also would not end the blog if I worked for them. I could easily handle both jobs and I will be attempting to apply for Penntrack. I will keep all of you in the loop as the process continues, but I will continually be here for the community as the 'unfiltered' comments and anonymous ones are what I find so important.

  21. HAHAHA I hate Don Rich with a passion. I volunteered to write or basically do anything for Penntrack two years ago, and he never even emailed me back. Arrogant prick.

  22. PA girls went 1-4! Weisner (4:55), Sheva (4:56), Clahane (4:57), and Barrett (4:59)! Weisner and Sheva earning Millrose spot. Schwartz will get an auto bid I believe since she was a sub 4:50 1600 runner as well. Don't count out clahane and Barrett though, they will probably take one more shot at it. We could have a quarter of the field be from PA!
