Northeast Regional Updates!

 http://www.footlockercc.com/2014/results/northeast/boyschampionship.pdf
Footlocker Northeast Qualifiers:
1. Alex Ostberg
2. Luke Petela
3. Ari Klau
4. Casey Comber
5. Jake Brophy
6. Benito Muniz
7. Eli Moskowitz
8. Jeriqho Gadway (totally missed that he switched over)
9. Jack Jibb
10.  Shawn Hutchison
(I was 7/10 for those of you keeping count)

Casey Comber beast out Jake Brophy for the first time since last season's league championships! I'm really happy for Comber, the kid works so hard and he's been trying so hard to beat Brophy all season long and he finally did it. The two of them could very well place top 20 at Nationals. I also wouldn't be surprised if they've been training together, but that's just speculation. Either way congratulations to the two of them for qualifying for Nationals!

After an blazing start and a tough District/State meet Paul Power, much like Chris Cummings of last season, finished 14th overall! Dominic Hockenbury placed a very solid 15th overall and is one of the top returners behind Brophy.

Abert finished 16th overall. It was his first time running in almost a week due to a sickness, which is a terrible way for him to end his season. Hopefully he can bounce back on the track. The same can be said for Sam Ritz who placed 28th overall. By far his best footlocker finish.

I think PA represented really well today at the Footlocker meet! Now we wait for NXN!

State Team Scores:
NY- 52
PA - 54
CT - 57
NJ - 86
MA - 110

It was a tough overall day for PA at NXN

Kevin James is the only qualifier from the region from PA with a 4th place finish.

Austin Gilbert who was 25th in the region going into the season had by the best day of his life coming up with a big win. His Ridgefield team didn't pull it together though.

Big race for Aaron Gebhart with a 10th place finish overall! He won't make nationals, but it was a big comeback race for him after a tough day at states. (Nice call GBC). Also Alex Knapp placed 17th overall and for the 3rd straight year he really shows up and has a great race at regionals!

Anyone know what happened to Sam Webb? He did not finish the race (or at least isn't in the results), but Pennsbury's XC team tweeted good luck to him.

NA had a tough day overall. They did score 193 points (I had them at 192), but I totally underestimated this LaSalle squad that scored 63 points!!! They saw a nice races from almost everyone, especially Zack Deible getting 61 points. Had he been their 5th man they might have done some real damage. I highly, highly doubt they'll make nationals, especially with teams in the Southeast region scoring 141, 158, 159, and 160 points. (I'll make a bigger post about this later). They had a solid, but not an amazing day and that's what you need to make nationals.

  3. 193 Wexford Flats (16:55.6 84:38.0 1:00.9)
=============================================
  1 13 Matt McGoey SR 16:27.6
  2 19 Hunter Wharrey SR 16:37.1
  3 25 Scott Seel SR 16:43.4
  4 61 Zack Deible SO 17:21.4
  5 75 Jacob Stupak JR 17:28.5
  6 (110) Marc Migliozzi JR 17:53.4
  7 (130) Tj Robinson FR 18:07.7

Also solid overall day from Cardinal O'Hara who scored 253 points (had them at 250)
I'm glad Kevin James got the Q. He's now a 3x qualifier for nationals, which is really, really impressive. His younger brother ran pretty solid, but like expected Pastore was way back. Patrick James looked really great as their 5th man. Major props to the freshman stepping up when needed. They return everyone but Kevin next season, which will be a great squad to watch. Solid overall season for them.
  7. 253 Cardinal O'Hara XC Club (17:02.0 85:09.6 1:35.3)
=============================================
  1 4 Kevin James SR 16:05.9
  2 23 Ryan James SO 16:42.6
  3 38 Rob Morro JR 17:00.0
  4 92 Drew Pastore SR 17:39.9
  5 96 Patrick James SO 17:41.2
  6 (166) Billy Donovan SO 18:25.8
  7 (179) Jack Nolen SR 18:33.3
Other tough results came from Conestoga as they placed 12th overall
Cooper probably had the best race of his season running in between Murray and Nelson. Marston had a really tough day with a 36th place finish overall. It looked really snowy and he might have fallen or slipped, but either way its a tough way to finish a season. I think this team could surprise in the DMR this indoor...
 12. 343 Irish Road T.C. (17:23.8 86:58.7 0:59.6)
=============================================
  1 31 Andrew Marston SR 16:50.0
  2 62 Pj Murray JR 17:22.4
  3 72 Jimmy Cooper SR 17:27.6
  4 77 Kilian Nelson SR 17:29.1
  5 101 Jack Iffert SR 17:49.6
  6 (182) Nick Boccella SR 18:34.4
  7 (216) Theo Roberts JR 19:06.9

  1. Told you it was way off to pick Brophy over Abert with all the mental toughness stuff.

    1. To be fair a healthy Colin Abert wasn't able to show up to the meet and he still placed 16th overall. Of course I know that many people are going to come on here and say that's an excuse. Well if you haven't been able to run for a week and then race and still place pretty solid at a regional meet you're a flat out stud.

    2. Sounds like inside info influenced the late change in prediction.

  2. Marston fell near the top of the big hill, I was right behind him when it happened and it looked like a pretty bad fall. Props to him for still finishing strong. Both him and Gebhart got out pretty badly at the start (which was really messy) which hurt their races a bit I'm sure. I have no idea what happened to Webb, I saw him in the front for the first half of the race, didn't see him again after the top of the hill so he must have dropped out or gotten hurt again.
Thanks to Forrest (and etrain) for all the great coverage these past few years! It's always be great to know who you're competing against. XC has been fun PA, and I'll miss it!

    1. Classy, I like it.

    2. Ouch. Race video on NY mile split shows nasty fall of one of the leaders and then Webb (?) almost going down and then pulling out. Both events captured around the 3:15-3:30 point in video.

  3. Abert had a severe mouth infection and was not able to eat or run for almost 8 days last week. I think the fact that he showed and ran at Footlocker shows he has mental toughness. Congratulations to Comber and Brophy for running a great race. They will represent PA well in San Diego. I heard Abert is taking 2 weeks off and then will be ready for indoor track.

  4. Sam Webb has to be the unluckiest kid in PA running. This makes two years in a row that he's had to drop out of regionals to do a leg injury. Webb is wearing the orange hat, so it makes him pretty easy to spot. At 3:25 in this video http://usa.milesplit.com/meets/181624/videos?id=68033#.VHuCPtaT7to he tweaks his left leg really badly and hops out of the race. Such a shame as he was running about 8th place when it happened. Hopefully he can bounce back similar to last year, but such a sad way to end one of the most underrated cross country careers.

    1. First of all, I wish I had an MSi insider account, too bad I'm broke. Second of all, Sam Webb has more natural talent than 99% of high school distance runners, so there is no way he is unlucky at all.

    3. Doubt that's true, Malvern is building a decent program around them. And Dwest already has a nice public school program of their own that's on the rise. There's already plenty of potential next year. If earlier reports were accurate about professional coaches and parents involved in providing workouts that's the last thing the coach or runners needs to deal with when they already have a legit shot at winning states for the next two years.

    4. It's absolutely true that they are transferring. From Josh Hoey's instagram:
i love malvern prep. i really do. i love the brotherhood and the special feel of malvern. mp raised me (i was a #lifer). however this was not the same for the running teams. unfortunately it came to point where i am now leaving malvern to attend downingtown west. i only hope and pray the best for mp'18. thanks so much guys for being great friends and guiding me, but it's time for me to move on #pleaseforgiveme #onceafriaralwaysafriar? #dwest #whippets

    5. It's true. I beleive its do to a number of reasons. Coach vs parent conflict is top of the list. There is also the feeling that the independent league that Malvern is in is sort of a B league for sports compared to the PIAA
Plus the fact that with the Hoeys at DTown west, they would be loaded and have to be the favorite to win states and regionals next year. To a father looking to showcase his sons, this is compelling. I'm sure the cost of having 3 kids in private school doesn't help.

    6. Will Burns be a pushover and let the parents have free reign?

    7. It's happened before with dad's coaching. It might be happening now.

    8. Well, he's done it before.

    9. He may have a real handful there, it sounds like the other guy is being blamed for the injury and it's a I'll take my footballs and play somewhere else situation. That said, it's a shame they didn't go to Dwest from the get go and maybe this drama would have been avoided. Dwest is a solid program and a solid school.

    10. He has been with Devlin so I don't see how this will be any different.

    11. 3 Hoeys plus Sappey plus a solid returning core= DWest is the runaway to win States next year.

    12. The youngest Hoey is only in 7th grade right now. He'll still be in middle school next year. The only possibility of seeing him on the team would be at NXN regionals, and even then I'm not sure if DWest could use him because they are a public school.

    13. trained by henderson, running for dwest… somethings not right

    14. Very fishy indeed

      Delete
    15. He only trained with Henderson over the summer. He is trained by his mom who gets workouts from a professional coach. Wonder what will happen if in 2 years his college coach has him run a workout without his mom present? Will dad have him transfer to the neighborhood University?

    16. Dwest is WCH's XC sister school. They're joined at the hip.

  6. Josh and Jaxson are transferring but the youngest will finish middle school at malvern and then go to dwest

    1. I don't know, I guess running PA's 2nd fastest ever time at NXN is a bad day.

    2. In his interview on milesplit he said something about having back problems during the race, but that could also just be an excuse for running bad who knows.

    3. XC is about place, not time. It was a PA record on that course. I'm sure he was hoping to be an All-American.

  10. I watched the live stream:
He got out really fast, maybe top 10 at the 1k and then seemed to fade as the race went on. The start was really fast so he may have gone out a bit too hard or something.
Also, times get thrown out the window at nationals as the course was changed this year, and the conditions/mud drastically change the times from year to year. And just from last year alone, both russell and knapp from WCH, as well as molino and james himself ran faster times than he did this year just so you know.
