FL Regionals mini-Preview + NY/MD State Meet info

Hey guys, I did a write up for the NY state meet, and I realized that during it, I can't see anyone who is a real contender to a top 10 spot at FL NE will not attend the NY NXN Regional Qualifier.

I also did a bunch of research for Maryland, and honestly it doesn't seem like they have any threat runners in terms of top 10 spots as well. All of this being said, here's a little write up going into the FL meet that I will expand on later with predictions. It's just a watch list to get everyone ready over the next few weeks. If guys are left out, it's because I believe/know they will be attending the NXN Regional Qualifier, not attending either regional meet, or doesn't have a shot at top 10.

Feel free to add some suggestions of names to this list. I'll be sure to respond with why they're not on the list or I'll be totally off and add them! :)

·         Kyle Kroon – NJ (5th)

·         Colin Martin – 6th @ PA AAA States
·         Jake Brophy – 7th @ PA AAA States… can a sophomore make it to nationals??
·         Ethan Martin – Having a comeback from injury, give him a month after the state meet is dangerous.

NJ Guys to Watch for:
·         Kyle Kroon – 5th @ FL last season. Placed 11th @ Shore Coachs in 16:28, but he’s got a 9:03 3200 to his name. Can’t write him off after one less than great performance.

·         Louis Corgliano – Has had a very strong season, recently placed 2nd to Kroon @ Sectionals. Beat out Stephen Maine.

New England Guys to Watch for:
·         Chris Alvarado – CT – 8th @ FL last season.  4th @ New England’s, but has beaten the winner twice, including at the CT state meet.
·         Alex Ostberg  - 15:11 for 2nd place @ New England’s. 3rd @ CT state meet to Alverado and Hopper.
·         Josef Andrews – ME (22nd) – Ran very well so far this season, winning the Maine state championships and placing 3rd @ New England’s.

    1. As of now...
Deluca (Dallas), Green (JB), Hockenberry (LL), Shinn (Wyo), Kanzajians, and Colin Martin are all in. No Ethan.

For the young races all the young CV boys, Tomasko (Mechanicsburg), the frosh from Peters TWNSHP will all be in the race

  6. For the girls:

Tessa Barrett- AAA State champ in XC, and 3k, state record holder in both.
Jerrica Bauer- Independent school state champ
    Elizabeth Chikotas- AA State champ.
Mady Clahane- 3rd at states to Smith/Barrett (ungodly athletes), broke old state record though. Placed 15th at FL as a freshman and is significantly better.
Brianna Schwartz- AAA mile state champ, 5th at States.
Kara Steinke- Placed 13th at FL regionals last year (never does too hot at States though).
Paige Stoner- Placed 21st last year.
Kennedy Weisner- Returning FL Nationalist, Brooks PR Invite competitor, Millrose Mile competitor, the only returning athlete that's running it for girls or boys.

A little sad Regan Rome isn't running. I can't remember how high FL places, but she was 19th, I think that's All-American. Hopefully she signs up in the near future. Marissa Sheva also would have made a huge impact on the field, but mono sucks.

This is one of the most talented fields PA has had contesting for FL in a while on the girls side. Smith and Unionville will be at NXN along with Sargent and Pennsbury. That will be a great race as well, both teams potentially making nationals. I think Unionville had a shot to win until Emily Fisher went down with mono. Now I think they may go for a top 5 finish.

I guess I should say something about the boys...

A little surprised Webb and Artia are running at FL. The Kazanjian bros aren't signed up, are we sure they're running FL? Same deal with Brophy and the Martin twins.

This course isn't terribly challenging, so Ross Wilson will have to definitely put in some speed work the weeks leading up to the meet. It will definitely benefit Colin Abert and the Martin twins if they are running, especially Ethan coming off an injury.

    2. more surprised Diestelow is running after his states race.

    3. I'm not sure what you are talking about? This course is difficult. It's no hershey, but the rolling hills are extremely tough. Just because it starts and ends flat doesn't mean it is "easy." Watch a course video or take a look at a course map. Rarely do people run much faster than they did at hershey.

    4. I've seen the course from videos. I didn't say it wasn't difficult, but it's not as hard as Hershey. I honestly think it's a little easier than Salesianum. I didn't mean it was easy, but from seeing the course/the times on the course, it's about a 7.5 on the challenging scale.

The reason people's times are rarely faster than Hershey because the goal of FL is to be top 10, unless you're VERY confident to take the lead and push, everyone is staying in the pack until about 3500 M before they make their surge. Even Ben Furcht (who sadly never ran to his potential at the State meet, but was a great XC runner) waited until late to make his move (outkicking his teammate Neal) and he was a grinder (dropped 40 seconds from his state time). No one wants to go out like a maniac and ruin their chance to make it to nationals. It's also significantly colder at that meet, which accounts for the slower times. On the girl's side, their times sometimes drop significantly. Regan Rome dropped about a minute from her States' time, Kara Steinke about 30 seconds. On the other side, freshman Mady Clahane added about 20 seconds, and Weisner added about 10. I think it's all down to how well you can run in the cold/how your race strategy is.

I figured Diestelow was doing it because Cummings was, same way I figure Matt Kaz would do it because Chris was.

That's god to hear about Regan! She wasn't on the list when I looked at it so I was confused, she's the top returner and could capture a top 15 spot this year.

    5. I wouldn't be too shocked about Diestelow. Everybody has off days/ I'd be more shocked about Brain Arita, he's good, but not that good. Again RTJ is right, he's there because he has a teammate there, and hey, when you're rising to the top why not try your hand at Footlocker, you never know what'll happen

    6. They could be running to get experience on the course for next year too.

      Delete
    7. Yeah I feel like Arita is just doing it
A.) To help his teammate out as a training partner so he doesn't have to do run's and practices alone as others move into indoor.
B.) Get experience because he could definitely still improve and go there next year with a different mindset.

    8. All things being equal, Hershey is about 15 seconds slower then van Cortland. Van Cortland's back hills are very tough. Why wouldn't you run one of these post-season meets, especially if you have a good teammate to travel with? It pushes back indoor which is a good thing for most distance guys. There is no need to race on the track in December if you run xc. I hear the Henderson guys aren't racing until Yale.

    9. Van Cortland is a really tough course. I wouldn't think it runs faster than Hershey but I'll take your word for it.
WCH seems to lay low for indoor-they do train and compete at a few select meets, But Yale sounds about right for their 1st meet.

    10. I never got the point of laying low for indoor. I loved traveling up to Lehigh each week and competing in different events and relays (not really different, just the 200-800 and then rotate, but still). It was always a good time heading up there and didn't affect our running in the least bit. Especially at a younger age, freshman and sophomore year it was so important racing every weekend.

    11. There's plenty of reasons to race on the track in December if you run XC.
      - To gauge where your training is
      - if you're recovered from an XC injury that shortened the season and you're hungry to race
      - if play other sports in spring so you want to get the most out of indoor
      - Trying to qualify for MOC or states while still in to XC shape, before taking a break.
      - You like it
      - Your coach wants you to
      - You have nothing better to do
      - You're trying to impress a member of the girls team
      - You love the smell of an indoor meet in the morning, it smells...like victory (or a locker room)

The list could go on and on.

    14. Right on with the Icy Hot! WCH races indoors, just not at Lehigh so much. They do Yale, some stuff at Glen Mills, Ursinus, at least 1 or 2 races at The Armory, States. They are well represented in Indoor track.

    15. Let's be honest, Lehigh smells like sweat, dust, and poorly made hot dogs from the snack stand.

    16. Yes....but it's the culture and excitement that gets me hyped. Walking in, it doesn't matter how good you are or how dry the place might be. Nothing gets me pumped like the adrenaline of racing at Lehigh. Especially those first few meets.
