Season Stories: Reiny Barchet

Reiny Barchet had a fantastic junior campaign that left him with big PR’s such as 15:22 for 5k, 9:08 for 3200, along with an All-American title from a 21st place finish at NXN, 2nd place at NX Northeast Regionals, and a state medal… not to mention being a part of two All-American relays indoors. High expectations for his senior year in some ways could be an understatement, but so far he’s on the right track to accomplishing his goals.

Starting his season around the end of June, Barchet put in the miles he needed, but his season truly started in September when his team upped millage a little bit, from the summer. Going into the season, Barchet knew all too well the expectations of him and his team: “Ranked as high as 2nd in the nation on preseason polls we knew we wanted to seriously contend for a national title.” With such high expectations Coach Kelly pushed back the training program to help ensure a peak at nationals, but this didn’t dissuade Barchet or the Henderson boys from other goals, such as repeating as Ches-Mont, District, and State champions.

Early in the season Barchet wasn’t racing very well, and some complications arouse, “I wasn't racing well but my training was the best it's ever been and after a few mediocre races I developed a sinus infection and possibly had Lyme disease so I went on a preventative course of antibiotics.” This caused a slight slowdown in training, but Barchet would not be discouraged, as he continued to work hard and got ready for Ches-Monts and Districts, where he and the Henderson squad raced without tapering.

After decent finishes at both meets, Barchet knew he had more in him, but not enough to race with teammate Tony Russell, so a plan was made: “Knowing I wasn't in full form for states I talked to my coach and Tony and we decided I wouldn't try and contend for the individual title but instead try and lead the chase pack and place as high as I could while Tony hammered the pace up front leaving me to pick up the pieces.” The strategy paid off quite well as Barchet was able to finish 5th overall, a big improvement from the season before.

Looking on to the rest of the season, Barchet states: “Our plan for the rest of cross country is to train until regionals with one small meet we're hosting open to runners who want to race in the 4 week stretch between states and regionals. The end goal is the make nationals and place very competitively.” The way the season has gone for this squad so far, they are definitely on the right path to accomplishing their goals.

Not trying to get too far ahead of himself, Barchet reluctantly discussed passed cross country, saying that he, “would like to focus on the national stage and hopefully win some relays at indoor and/or outdoor nationals.”

    1. I'm going to do one after regional's most likely. I've started to compile some data, but I've got a bunch more Season Stories to post in the next two weeks along with the Regional's preview, which I think are more pertinent right now.

      Track stuff will come though!

  2. Can anyone elaborate on this meet that they're hosting? XC race? Open 3200m? Full track meet? When would it be?

    Thanks

    1. Never mind, found it on PennTrack. "Deuce at Singer Farm" - it's an XC 2mile on Saturday the 16th. For anyone who's run there, how's the course?

    2. It's literally a farm-2 miles around a hilly cornfield.
I hate the place which translates to a kick-ass, awesome training run, especially if you're getting ready for regionals.

    3. The race is going to be pretty loaded. This is only the 2nd time there has ever been a race here(Henderson and DTW train there). Gottesfeld has the course record-10:10 from 2003. It's a tough loop-great preparation for either Regional meet. There is no parking at the course. So, everyone will register at Kildare's and then run over as a group. Race and then run back. There will be awards/food back at Kildare's. It's an open race so some college/open guys might show up. Should be a lot of fun.

    4. Is it for elite type runners only or can guys done XC trying to maintain for indoor run it without being embarrassed?

    5. Go for it. It sounds like a good time actually.

    6. It's for everyone. Henderson will have a bunch of their young guys and probably some middle school guys running.

  3. Probably the hilliest place I have ever run. One massive hill about 600 meters in and another bigger hill at 1.5 miles.

  4. Barchet deserves a lot of credit because he wasn't racing to potential and you didn't see a single excuse posted about it on here when he had a valid excuse to make. And when people doubted him what did he do? He shut them up by running a great race.

    I respect that.

    1. He ran a great race with the help of Russell, you can't forget he might not have been that high had he not worked out a brilliant strategy with his teammate. He's a great runner, but we shouldn't be giving him all the credit just yet. Wait until he comes back in full strength at regionals and then you can give him all the credit he deserves.

    2. When is Moy going to catch on the this XC thing? Dude is a 4:16 miler. Even runners who consider themselves track guys can run solid XC. Maybe he breaks through at regionals!

    3. Well obviously a lot of credit goes to Russell for the strategy and I'm not trying to give Barchet all the credit. I'm just saying that its respectable that he didn't make excuses like other runners have when he was in that 'slump.' I'm very excited to see where the whole Henderson crew is a couple weeks down the road.

    4. What does coach RJJL Kelly have to say about this? He's been mysteriously quiet since his state predictions.
