Henderson 2 Mile

I am super hyped up about this 2 Mile, but before I get to that I wanted to mention that I am slightly disappointed that Aaron Gebhart, Brendan Bilotta, and Sam Ritz are not in the 2 Mile, but furthermore, I am furious that Paul Power was left out of the race (he’s in the 3200).

Now, remember that this is a full 2 miles which is great. A bunch of these guys really want sub 9 and Wilson and Deluca went out in 2:10 into a 4:26 mile at Penn Relays so they’re ready to roll alongside Tony Russell (4:09.9 split at PR) and Griffin Molino (4:12 solo 1600). Joining these studs is the fearless Jaxson Hoey of MP, the Lower Dauphin Duo, Reiny Barchet, who ran 9:08 here last year. Here is the main guys on the list and how fast I believe they will run.

P.S. – Russell has been bragging about going for the 16/32 double Gold at states so look for him to run fast. Also the record is 8:48.99 by Craig Forys, look for Russell to go after this (I see the race going out in ~4:24/4:25).

**This is for optimal conditions**
Jaxson Hoey – 9:08.48
Billy McDevitt – 9:14.89
Jeff Groh – 9:15.51
Cole Nissley – 9:13.35
Dominic Deluca – 8:59.94
Ross Wilson – 8:57.43
Andrew Marston – 9:12.67
Sam Webb – 9:19.56
Eric Diestlow – 9:15.43
Stephen Garrett (DE) – 9:12.43
Tony Russell – 8:53.45
Reiny Barchet – 9:02.79
Griffin Molino – 8:58.78
Dominic Hockenbury – 9:11.53
Jonathan Perlman – 9:19.92

How many people will break 9? Who will win? Post and let me know and Vote on the poll on the side.

  1. Tony: 9:00 or possibly slightly under 9
    Molina 9:05
    Wilson 9:08
    Deluca 9:09
    Barchet 9:12
    Hoey 9:15

  2. Also ridiculous is the fact that Casey Comber didn't get into the fast heat. He, along with Power, Arita, and possibly Willig, should probably break 9:30, maybe even low 9:20s.

Anyway, here are my fast heat predictions for PA guys:
Ross "MF" Wilson - 8:54. Upset alert! I think Ross just might have more endurance/strength than Tony, and he came on really strong with his 4:15 mile at the end of indoors. Think of him as Brendan Shearn with more speed (who beat Tony last year), which is good because Tony is faster than last year.

Tony - 8:56. To be determined if he kicks and just misses Ross or if Ross outkicks him. An awesome race to go sub-9, but not the W.

DeLuca - 9:01. Can't quite recover from the hype of his awesome Penn race. Hangs with the leaders for most of it, but gassed at the end.

Molino - 9:03. To be honest, I'm not sure if Molino is more of a strength or speed guy; I'm kind of betting on the latter. I think he kicks away from a big pack but can't quite catch a fading DeLuca.

Hoey - 9:10. A fantastic performance for a great sophomore who has gone almost entirely under the radar, partially because PennTrack would rather write about girls who run 2:13 but "really want to break 2:10...yay!" Sorry for the misogyny, but then again, that's par for the course here. Oh yeah, this was about Hoey...he'll run well, I'm sure!

Marston, Barchet - 9:12. The meteoric rise continues for Marston, while Barchet runs pretty well. Hard to compare Barchet this year to Barchet last year.

Webb, Hockenbury - 9:15. Webb's fierce competitiveness keeps him in it, Hockenbury solo'd a 9:22 a few weeks ago.

Collins, Stratman, Nissley - 9:18. Collins and Stratman are better milers than 2milers, but the pack keeps them in it. They probably both outkick Nissley.

McDevitt, Diestelow, Groh - 9:25 give or take 4 seconds for each. Diestelow and Groh still rounding into shape a bit. McDevitt can be inconsistent.

    Perlman - 9:29

    Colin McDonald - 9:32

Nick Dahl - 9:39. Inexperience gets the better of this talented freshman.

    1. You're forgetting the fact that Russell was 11th at XC nationals... 2 time north eastern regional XC champion, and 2 time pa state champion in XC. He holds the state course record in cross country. Yeah he's been running some insane 1600's and miles, that should only help his case in the 2 mile...... don't forget who the real distance power house runner in PA is. Yeah the other guys are good and have a chance to win but it would be stupid to ever say that ross has more strength than tony. Ross been running slower times than tony in everything that they have both raced for the past 4 years. Russell was the only guy to break 15 in the 5k in XC in the past how many years in pa?

I say Russell with an 8:48
      Deluca 8:53
      Wilson 8:54
      Molino 8:55
Drum roll, Barchet at 8:59. The dude has dropped some solid PR's this season. And he did great in XC.. his 4:16 full mile PR puts him right next to Ross Wilson. I just don't think he's strong enough to beat ross or those other guys in the 2 mile yet

    2. Tony is awesome, but I wanted to pick a little upset. Partially because Forrest portrayed him as being a bit cocky about his states double, and also partially because I can't remember the last time he lost to PA competition.

  3. Russel 9;03
    Molina 9:09
    Wison 9:11
    Deluca 9:17
    Barchet9:18
    Hoey 9:20
    Marton 9:21
    Groh 9:21

  4. Russell 8:56
    Wilson 8:59
    Molino 9:00
    DeLuca 9:01
    Barchet 9:03
    Hoey 9:03

Possibly a tad slower because it is a full 2 mile

  5. Why the heck is the hot heat a full 2 mile? That makes no sense, nobody runs that anymore. The chances of breaking 9 are reduced by 3 seconds, the event isn't run at districts, states or any of the championship meets. I guess Penn Track will convert the results to the 3200 anyway but I'm still not getting it.

    1. They'll have a camera set up at the 3200m to get an official time there. Also, I think, they're getting a 3k time. It seems like whenever they have a really good field, they run 2 miles in the fast heat. Last time they did, State records were set in NJ and PA. I think only 4 guys in PA history have run under 9:00. 5 could do it tomorrow.

  6. 1. Ross Wilson - 8:56
    2. Tony Russell - 8:58
    3. Dominic DeLuca - 8:59
    4. Griffin Molino - 9:02
    5. Jaxson Hoey - 9:04
    6. Andrew Marston - 9:10
    7. Sam Webb - 9:11
    8. Dominic Hockenbury - 9:13

  7. It looks like good conditions for the 2 mile tomorrow, any wind should die down as the evening settles in. I also thought this was a 3200 so at 2 miles I guess that means factor in another 3 seconds or so to the sub 9 predictions.

Assuming no rabbit, these big races usually have a couple of guys feeling it and willing to take it out fast. I can see Russell taking advantage of that and riding the leaders for two laps but as the race slows, look for him to just start cranking out the 67.5 quarters. Who else is going to do it? Maybe Wilson, maybe Deluca, both should be fired up for a big performance but would probably be wise to stay back as let Russell set the pace and hope they have something big for the gun lap. I’m really curious to see what Molino can do after that 4:12 the other week, he has the potential for a big race but who knows, a fast mile doesn't always immediately translate to a fast two mile..

In the end I can’t go against Russell. He hasn’t run this distance competitively in a while and even with his outstanding mile times, the longer races are probably still better suited for him. I’d expect him to wear down this field and pull away in the 7th lap. Unless someone else is leading or if they have a rabbit, it’s probably Russell through the mile around 4:27 with the contenders right behind. The fast first mile will probably ruin the race for a few who go out too hard with the leaders.

They’ll be a lot of enthusiasm for this race and tremendous crowd support, I’d love to see a pack go sub 9 and but that’s a really tall order. My prediction:

    Russell 8:52
    Deluca 8:59
    Molino 9:04
    Wilson 9:06
    Barchet 9:10

It should be a great race.

    1. Etrain wore a shirt so posters could find him at meets and say hello. We’d ask you to do the same but since everyone knows who you ‘really are’, we’ll just wave to you near the finish area.

  9. If Russell is really bragging as this post said, it's really the wrong sport to do that in. Everybody gets humbled from time to time and in running there's no hiding in a team or from the clock.

For the record, I've never heard of him bragging before and if he just said he's "going" for gold at states in the both the 1600/3200, that's not bragging. He's just saying his events and that he's running to win, big deal.

    1. Live results on Kennett Timing's website. Some quick takeaways:
Tony is clearly the boss, but you do have to wonder if Ross and Deluca were a bit tired from following up some awesome 3ks with a 3200.

Reiny is for real; I had some doubt, but that's a great result from him.

Tony didn't get the record, but Hoey may in 2 years.

Comber absolutely deserved to be in the fast heat, and I'm glad he was.

Despite being an NXN qualifier, Molino's best event is clearly the 1600. If he was considering doubling at states, he just may want to reevaluate.

Nick Dahl should be able to break 4:20, an awesome achievement for a frosh.

    2. The 2 mile went out too slow,

      Delete
    3. Russell pulled it through in what I saw as 2:13.7 so it was about 2:27 pace... then dom really slowed the pace down and they came through the first mile in around 4:35. Russell negative split 10 seconds on his second 2 mile. If he runs the 3200 at nationals in a fast race with a fast pace 8:49 would be in his reach. Wilson ran well and Deluca did too. Hopefully some of them run it at nationals for a 2nd go at it.

  12. Quick look at Baldwin before the results get up. Somewhat windy, slight drizzle here and there. Chilly

Knoch takes 4x800 in about 8:15

    Full mile:
    1. James Smith (USC) sub 4:20
    2. Brett Foster (SV) sub 4:20
    3. Mike Kolor (SV) only a soph ~4:20
Smith tracked down Foster over the last 200, Colin Martin and Brent Kennedy take 4th and 5th

    800:
    1. Dylin Wilhoite (Penn Hills) ~1:54
    2. James Smith (USC)
    3. ?
Leaders went out in 58-59 so we could see some faster stuff yet. No Becich in this one

    3200:
    1. Colin Martin (FC) 9:10-15
    2. Matt McGoey (NA) a second or two behind Martin
    3. Caleb Wakely (Shaler) with a comfortable lead on 4th place finisher Hunter Wharrey of NA
