Wilson Gets Title - 8:56, State College - 7:41, Brehm - 4:11, Francis - 1:49.57!

3200m Results:
  1 180 Wilson, Ross 12 CR North 01 9:11.19 8:56.29R 10
Deluca took it out hard, and a bunch of runners went through the 1600m in ~4:28! Russell put 40m on the field with 800 to go and the race was really strung out, and Martin moved passed Wilson going into the last lap. With 300m to go Wilson pushed passed Martin on his quest to catch Russell. Wilson had 30m to catch up to Russell with 200m to go, but he put on a huge move and began to blast around the turn! With 50m to go he finally caught up to Russell and they battled for a bit, but Wilson was too strong as Russell faded in the final meters.

After 31 years Mike Connelly's record has fallen to not one, but two runners. Connelly is one of the top runners in PA history and placed 2nd and 4th at XC nationals during the early 80's. Wilson's 8:56.29 is really incredible and he split 4:28/4:28 to do it, my goodness. It was a valiant and gutsy effort by Deluca. If he had someone else leading it out in 4:25 I bet he can run ~8:55 and I hope we see him at Nationals.
Here are Wilson's splits recorded by Don Rich: 66, 2:15, 3:31, 4;28, 5:36, 6:45, 7:51, 8:56.

3 guys went under 9 minutes over 3200m's, the 3rd being Colin Martin who ran 8:59.90! Good lord these guys came out ready to roll. Behind him was Kevin James who ran 9:03.19 and the junior now has an ever tougher record to try and break next season. Imagine running 9:03 and getting put in the dust! That last lap nobody was paying attention to a dude running a time that would have won states almost any other year. Kevin James is in amazing shape (Brendan Shearn ran 9:04 in high school) and is an absolute stud as a junior. Props for not shying away from the big dog seniors and running an amazing time.

Dominic Deluca paid the price for taking the race out so hard and died, but he finished 5th in 9:07.33 (4:21/4:46) . Sam Webb came up big once again and placed 6th in 9:08.11, which is another PR for the junior. He ran 9:13 last year and coming off a huge injury after XC he has now dropped 5 seconds this outdoor season after not racing indoors. It's really phenomenal and he's going to be scary next season. Reiny Barchet had a tough day, but he still medaled running 9:11.35 (which would have been second last season!). And Matt Mcgoey grabbed the last podium spot in 9:12.32, which is a nice new PR for the junior. Right behind him were two more junior studs who missed out on the medal stand, were Aaron Gebhart (9:17) and Casey Comber (9:18). (I will watch the race at 5PM tonight so I can discuss them better)

4x8 AA Results:
Jack Dicinto ran a 1:58 split. Wyomissing went out hard and hurt the team quite. A bit. Lake-Land’s second leg got a huge lead on the field by splitting 2 flat. Kyle Shinn (Wyomissing) made up about 15m and took, but Washington’s runner took the lead going into the final leg. They were about 3m ahead at the exchange, but Washington took a 10m lead in the first lap of the anchor leg thanks to Cortés Levi who increased his lead over the next lap as Washington wins in 7:58.35. Andrew Miller was running 1:57’s earlier this season, but he did not look good at all on the anchor leg.

4x8 AAA Results: (Sorry for the Randomness, these are just notes I took while watching)
First lap- 13:46 – Alex Milligan lead off for State College instead of Golembeski! First lap out in 57 seconds, which is pretty solid for the group led by Boyerown’s Dylan Ettinger. Eric Stratman ran behind them.
Second lap – 14:43 (57) – Dylan Ettinger was the top finisher in the leg with a 1:56.9 split.
Third lap – 15:42 (59) – Sam Webb second leg for Pennsbury. Pennridge and State College were 8th and 7th after 3 laps.
Fouth lap – Seamus Collins ran second leg for Henderson and finished in
17:38 – CB East took over and battled with Henderson on the 3rd leg.
CB East, Henderson, State College, and Penncrest were the top 4 going into the anchor leg. East handed off in first, Henderson second, State College 3rd, and Penncrest 4th

5:47 after 600m

Cather, Thompson, Jake Brohpy (Frank ran 3rd leg) with Ryan Grace coming on strong after the first lap. Cather pulled away from the field in the final 200m. Henderson second, CB East 3rd, North Penn 4th, Pennridge 5th.  Second Best time in the nation this season in 7:41.99!!

It looks like Pennridge came on too early at the start of the season and they died out in the 4x8 at the state meet. Cather looks so smooth and almost effortless pulling away from the 1:54 man Steve Thompson who held off Jake Brohpy (ran a wonderful leg!), but Cather 'only' had to run a 1:54.4ish split to get the win. This team can drop more time, no question. Cather did what he needed to do to get the W. Thompson and Brohpy both split ~1:56.8

Boys 1600m AA Results
Domenic Perretta controlled the pace and clearly was the best runner in the field as he covered a strong move by Curtin and kicked it in the last 120m. This kid is really strong, but slightly shorter. I have no doubt he’ll win the 800 later today; he looked so easy at the finish line. The top 5 runners are all returning next season, which will make for an exciting race and not to mention Griffin Molino who ran 4:12 earlier in the year but choose to run the 3200m instead. Not sure if he got injured, but he did not run well at all in that race. Also Kyle Gonoude who placed 3rd in 4:23 ran his PR in the prelims of 4:21.50, which would have placed him second. Poor prelim running by the youngster, but it’s a lesson learned.

Boys 1600m AAA Results
First off, Tony Russell dropped out of the 1600 after this 8:58 effort. He ran a really hard and gutsy race, and I won’t take that valiant effort away from him, but dropping out of the finals of another even because you’re tired is so disrespectful. Unless he got injured, run the race. You planned on it, and he took the spot of another runner who could have had an opportunity to shine. Reiny Barchet, Cole Nissley, and Will Kachman (AA) ran in the 3200 and came back to compete in the 1600 (None of them medaled, but they toed the line and put it all out there).

Now onto the race: With Russell out of it, nobody felt the need to take it out hard and it went through 800m in 2:12. From there Zach Brehm took the lead and started hammering a strong pace and they went through the 1200 in 3:14. Billy Caldwell put on a huge serge and took the lead on the back stretch, but Brehm was not to be denied. The two battled, but with 100m to go Brehm slowly pulled away to grab the win in 4:11.73 (closing in 57 seconds!). Caldwell held on for second in a big PR of 4:12.99!! I can’t stress enough how great of a race Caldwell had and he really lived up to the hype I brought onto him after his strong 4:20 mile at the end of last outdoors. He really blossomed senior year. Back to Brehm, the kid is a horse. He is so strong is ridiculous. He just powered home. After running well in a torrential downpour last weekend the boys from District 7 were pumped up for good weather. Jeff Van Kooten and Nathan Sloan placed 3rd and 4th respectively, both running 4:14. Van Kooten collapsed at the line, but Brehm quickly went over to him and held him up and helped him walk off the track as they talked. Really great sportsmanship there (also to note Ryan Grace also helped initially).

Colin Abert revamped his season after a tough indoor season and ran 4:17.23, which is pretty solid overall for the junior. Ryan Grace comes off a big split to help North Penn place 4th in the 4x8 to grab 6th place! That’s the best distance double of the day so far and I’d love to know what he split in the 4x8. After he had a tough junior year he broke out during XC and kept the ball rolling through the track season, very well done Ryan Grace. Jim Belfatto just didn’t look like he had it today placing 7th overall. He had a tough day, but I think we’ll see him bounce back come outdoor nationals. Connor Holm was able to snag the last spot in 4:21 over the tired legs of Nissley, Barchet, while Brown just wasn’t in the race from the start. We’ve got 4 returning medalists for next season!

Berretta let the race go out in 55.1 as he sat back in second place. He took the lead right as the bell sounded and didn’t look back, closing in 58.9 for a time of 1:54.01. He is a little bit shorter and is very strong. Hopefully he continues to grow in the next two years, or we won’t see much improvement. But anyway you look at it a sophomore doubling 4:19/1:54.01, I'm impressed.

800 AAA Final Results
Gosh darn it. I knew I should have stuck with my boy Kyle Francis. He didn’t run fast at Districts, and I guess he knew it didn’t matter as much as states. After Wiseman took it out in 25 high with Francis on his back they came through 400 in 54.0. The rest of the field was around 55.50. On the backstretch Francis tried to take the lead, it looked like he was going all out, but Wiseman held him off. (Not sure the 600 split). Coming off the turn Francis gave it one more try, and this time Wiseman broke. Francis powered home to win in a time of 1:49.57, which just misses Tom Mallon’s state record -- 1:49.31! Wiseman held it together very well in the final stretch and finished in 1:50.37! That was an absolutely incredible race to top off possibly the best overall distance day the Pennsylvania State Meet as ever seen. 8:56, 7:41, 4:11, and 1:49 were the winners… Wow, just wow.

Joe Logue came back from the 4x8 to finish 3rd place in a fantastic time of 1:51.45! No doubt in my mind just about any other year Logue would have won an individual state title in the 800. Zach Brehm ran a smart race and sat back. 7 runners ran 1:54 and Brehm led the pack to take 4th in 1:54.24. Alek Sauer proved me wrong as he came off the 4x8 to run 1:54.38! That’s a huge PR for him and it was on the double, very impressive. Behind him Cather did his best to double back hitting 1:54.56, beating out one of the few fresh guys Marcus Smail, who was 1:54.64. Smail did not run well at districts, much like Francis, but he ran exception at states this weekend and really earned his medal.

Dave Garton did his best to keep with the pack hitting 1:54.71 to grab the last medal just over Dylin Wilhoite by .07 seconds. Eli Mercado was feeling the double as well, but still hit 1:55. Nick Smart however died pretty hard and finished last with a time of 2:00.87.

 12 72 Smart, Nick 12 Crdnl O'Hara 12 1:54.58 2:00.87

O’Hara decided to keep their 3 studs fresh for individual events, and I’m not sure how well it paid off overall. Kevin James proved why he’s such a stud with a great time of 9:03, so he gets a 10/10 on performance. Belfatto looked like his junior year self, which I was sad to see. 4:18.90 is not a bad time and he got a medal, but the guy split 4:11 indoors and has run 4:15’s all season. And not sure what happened to Nick Smart who has split 1:53 and really looked poised to place very well.

Shout out to Central Bucks South girls 4x800m! They broke the state meet record by 4 seconds running 8:51.49!!! CB South now holds both the boys and girls 4x8 state records. The national records is 8:48... just saying, these young ladies are incredible.

Again, I rarely talk about girls racing but Maddie Vallalba of CB West won the girls AAA 800 in 2:09.65 and had an absolutely stellar kick to make up a 15m gap in just the home straight away. I rarely see girls truly turn it on at the end of a race, but oh man did she do that. I’m extraordinarily impressed.

Also Kennedy Wisner had a great 16/8 double to win double gold as she ran by herself in both races winning the 16 in 4:45 and 2:09 (63.6/65.8). Briana Swartz was the top in the state indoors no questions asked, but as Wisner was coming off injury she really broke out and had a wonderful outdoor season.

  1. That's a huge win for Wilson! He's been 2nd to Russell for two years in XC districts, trailed him at states, trailed him on the track. Wilson has chased Russell from Lehigh to Hershey and even down to West Chester. Until today he's been a guy with some great performances that had been overshadowed by Russell’s fine work.

A heck of a finish and a tremendous win to put a huge exclamation point on his career!

  2. If Russell wins the 1600 after that grueling 3200 it should go down as his greatest achievement.

  3. Huge win by Ross Wilson. Huge. Especially with the gap that was given. He could have just ran for second, but he put everything on the line to win which I love to see in a runner. Nice to see him finally get gold, he's so deserving of it.

Great run by Russell as well, breaking the old SR. Don't let Colin Martin get overshadowed either, he ran faster than his brother ever did and honestly, the top 6 would have won last year, so that's an accomplishment in itself.

It seems as though SC wasn't completely stacked? Kyle Adams isn't good enough for that 4x800 anymore? I thought the relay was Post, Adams, Golembeski, and Cather?

What were the splits on CB South's girl's 4x800? I'm dying to know. With that time the average split is a little lower than 2:13. I'm guessing the Stratz sister's ran out of their minds, but I can't even imagine who split what. They dropped 7 seconds in a week... that's unheard of.

Where are people finding the results? I'd love to see the girl's results and other events from everyone.

  4. All of the sudden Etrain and RJLL sounded right about their caution on that double for Russell. 4x800 - 1600 double might have been better. Let the second guessing begin.

  5. KYLE FRANCIS IS BACK

  6. Unless we have a true protege like German Fernandez, nobody is going to double Gold in the state of PA for the 16/32. It just will not be done.

Kyle Francis is most definitely back. It seems like the Bensalem coaching staff learned from racing Brad Rivera so hard all the time last year. Francis took it easy during his races this year and saved it for the end. I'm sure he's been killing workouts. He also didn't go to indoor nationals, which allowed for him to re-set. Very smart all around by him and the staff.

Also, a plug/shout out to my ATO Brothers and teammates Tyler Bauer and Jordan Rosenthal who will be throwing Javelin at 3:00PM (30 minutes) at the Division III National championships. Super excited for them.

  7. Russell got another stress fracture right before districts that he ran on so he decided not to risk messing up his collegiate XC season like he kinda did with his past XC season when he missed over a month of training. He told me that the 3200 was too long of a race to be running on it safely and he didn't want to add another fast 1600 and really hurt himself even more.

So pretty much what I'm saying is he obviously had to have had a reason to drop out so that little plug you made about him being disrespectful was bullshit and you know it.

    1. Clearly he still intended to run both as of yesterday since he ran the 1600 trials. That's a shame if he has another stress fracture but if he knew right before districts he probably should have backed off then and chosen just one event. His conditioning would still be outstanding but the grind of the trials at both meets would catch up with him. You can race effectively on a stress fracture for about a week or two but training becomes severely limited. I'm not sure what they were thinking over there at Henderson, that double is tough on anyone at any meet, but at states with a stress fracture? Really?

      Delete
    2. Your argument is invalid. If he had a stress fracture BEFORE districts, why would he double a 1600/3200 then? It makes no sense. Why would he run 2 1600m at districts, win in the finals. Then win the 3200. Train all week, then run the prelims of the 1600 AGAIN at States, then all out in the 3200 (it was his PR, so let's not pretend he wasn't going all out), then come down to one more race of the season and be like "Nah, I'm good. My stress fracture is acting up." You're just making excuses for Russell when he doesn't need them. We know he's the best 1600m in the State, he's proven that. Forrest was completely right. He wasn't protecting his XC season because if he was, he would have stopped before districts.

    3. The effort level of a 9:07, is much different from an 8:58 so he probably wasn't thinking it would affect him so much afterward, the kid doesn't like to back down from anything and he's always trying to push his limits I guess, it was a dangerous decision to try it on his part but he made the right decision to not continue with the 1600 after. Even if he raced well in it his leg would be done for a long long time.

      Delete
    4. If he was that concerned about it, and he knew about it since districts, he should have AT LEAST opted for the 1600/ 4x8 double, which is less stressful. It just doesn't seem logical, unless the stress fracture wasn't hurting or concerning him until today.

    5. Something just doesn't pass the smell test here.
Coach Kelly would have shut him right down if he was competing with a stress fracture and it's not something you can easily hide from someone as astute as Kelly.
Russell looked awesome in the 3200 until he saw the back of Wilsons singlet blow by him. I don't believe Russell ran such a great race with a stress fracture. Now maybe the disappointment of that race took some of the wind out of his sails and he couldn't physically, emotionally or mentally get turned up for the 1600. Maybe he thought it was a way to save face but unfortunately, it may have the opposite effect.
Russell is a gutsy, great runner who we'll be talking about for a long time-unfortunately his last(but hopefully not lasting)move on the PA high school running scene may also be memorable...for all the wrong reasons.

      Delete
    6. Russell raced awesome all of last year with it. He ran 9:07 as a junior with it and 4:13 twice with one. You can't scratch out of the 3200 or the 16 on trials day or the day before or even the week of I'm pretty sure because then you're out of the whole meet. Maybe it hurt for trials, maybe it didn't really hurt until after the 3200 maybe it didn't really hurt until the day after the districts meet with a hard double when it would be too late to make a decision because they already made heats for States. No matter what he did after districts if he scratched the 3200 then he couldn't run the 1600 and if he dropped the 1600 at trials he can't run the 3200 and no one is going to want to walk a trials event to place out on purpose.

      Delete
    7. If it is being reported he became aware of a stress fracture before districts, he obviously felt something-likely pain. He is no stranger to that type of pain. Has this been officially diagnosed or are we going to see him run next week with a "oops, my bad-it was just a little stitch" type of excuse?
He had plenty of time in the past 2 weeks or so to make the right decision and at the very least, opt out of one race-probably the 3200.
Disappointing how this whole thing went down and before I throw any more shade on him, have we actually heard from Russell himself regarding this matter?

      Delete
    8. ^^ posts up, there's some bad excuses being thrown around. If he decided late he was hurt and wanted to focus on the 3200 but couldn't scratch in the 1600 he could have just run 4:46 yesterday instead of taking first in the trials in 4:16. He was obviously still going after both

  8. If you scratch an event after the district sheets are filled out you're disqualified from the entire state meet. An exception would be in case of injury and any scratch would be needed to be certified by a physician. Therefore I do not believe the PIAA would allow him to scratch either just the 3200 or just the 1600 when he is running with a stress fracture, I also don't believe any physician would approve of an athlete running a 1600 or a 3200 after approving a scratch from one event because of the stress fracture and feel it right to allow him to run the other. If there was one who would, maybe he couldn't get an appointment to have a physician to approve of it in time for the state meet. There's a lot of different logical reasons as to why he scratched the 1600 besides the fact that he was just tired, and I doubt he'll come on to the blog to bother elaborating on the many reasons as to why he made his decision because to be honest it doesn't matter. The kid is ending his season early, not running next weekend and sadly probably not running at nationals because of it when he's in the best shape of his life. He's the best overall runner in our state and he has to cut his season short I doubt he's in any mood to deal with all of us at the moment.

  9. Hold on. To whomever reads this, sit down for 5 minutes and try to rationalize this with yourself.

It is clear that everyone is upset about Russell's decision. However, is this fair to be so critical of him? Set aside his reasoning (or whoever's reasoning) for dropping the 16. Now ask yourself, if Reiny Barchet did this, would we care as much and make such a big fuss? The answer is probably not. It's nothing against Barchet, but it would not be as big of a deal if he pulled this than if Russell did. Let's suppose ANYONE in that 3200 field was doubling back for the 16 ad dropped the race. Unless his name is Tony Russell, people simply wouldn't make as big of a deal. Would there be some complaints? Sure. But hype and raw talent can do wonders to people's perceptions of a high school kid. Did a kid get robbed of going to states/finals? You bet. But that's just life.

He is a national elite and has quite a following. His attempt to run a tough double in his last high school race was newsworthy. I for one am sorry it didn't work out for him. He has been an inspiration...

  10. You have Sunday and Monday, after districts, to scratch from the state meet.

If Russell does have a stress fracture I am extraordinarily sorry to hear that, and it's a horrible thing to happen at the end of a senior year. He did end with a strong second place finish, which is his best ever at an Outdoor State Championship and he still broke the meet record. I am not diminishing Russell's amazing race that he had outdoors today.

  11. Some great races today as expected.

3200 – Wilson with the big kick, big PR, state record and validation to his career which until today had everything but a big time victory. He’s got it now and must have jumped up a few spaces on that PA All-Timers that Etrain is working on!

1600 – Was all Brehm. I think it went out in something like 2:12 and came back in 1:59 so it shows the guy probably could have shaved a few seconds off in a more balanced race. A really gutsy move by Caldwell to go for it but Brehm was not being denied, Caldwell was rewarded with a nice PR though.

800 – Francis. Again. Where’s he been? His fastest time all season was like 1:54 and he knocks 5 seconds off? Breaks 1:50? Where did that come from? Tough not to feel for Wiseman, it seemed like this was going to be his time. They went at it alone most of the race but in the end Francis just seemed to be able to will himself to the finish first.

4x800 – State College, was there ever any doubt? WCH ran a great time but it was really a race for second.

Russell’s double? Going in on paper he had big leads on the field in both events and he’s looked strong all year, so it wasn’t as far fetched as it seems now. I figured someone would have a huge day and I figured it would be Wilson, but I still thought Russell would win it, even with the 1600 trials yesterday.
But even if he was on top of his game and had won the 3200 and then ran the 1600 as planned, I’m not sure he was beating a fresh Brehm today. Brehm looked like he had some left and it might have taken 4:08 to win it, which Russell can do, but very doubtful off of that double.

If it’s true he’s got a stress fracture that’s a tough way to end the season as his goals were pretty big coming in to this meet and a silver medal is probably little consolation. But his body of work the last two years is very impressive so he has more than enough to be proud about.

All the winning times were outstanding but the top distance performer has to go to Wilson with the upset and big state record win.

  12. A great meet today. Feel bad for Russell. He has been a pleasure to watch these past few years. Hope to continue hearing great things about him at PSU.
I'm sure the kid knows when his body is in trouble - a conditioned athlete with his experience has learned the difference between a basic soreness and something more serious. If he ran like we have come to expect from him and sustained more serious injury, you'd be jumping all over him for stupid heroics. He did the right thing.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So we can expect Russell to be so concerned about his collegiate XC season that he is done with running for Henderson? No Distance Festival? No New Balance Nationals? He said today that he "thinks" his stress fracture is back because the pain is in the same spot as last year, but that he will probably get an MRI to confirm it. No doubt he knew all along that he might scratch the 1600. So yeah, why run the trials? So many questions and speculations. Tony and Coach Kelly should be ashamed.

    ReplyDelete
  14. ^In a word, yes. He should be concerned about his collegiate running career. Distance Festival and Nationals are not school affiliated meets anyway do he'd likely not run in a Henderson uniform.
Wouldn't it be great if we could choose when we could suffer from injuries or have a bad race? Don't think he would have opted to withdraw if there wasn't serious enough concern. You think Coach Kelly wants him to go out that way? Not an optimal ending, but it's been a great ride.

    1. To each his own. This blog and the comments are for people to express their opinion. But unless you know something we all don't know, it's anybody's guess and this topic is fair game. Tony's uncertainty about whether or not he has a stress fracture leaves it wide open to speculate on his reason for dropping out as well as why he ever sought to run the 3200/1600 double if he suspected he had such a serious injury.

Regarding whether or not he runs in a Henderson uniform ever again is not the point. The point is IF he runs with his Henderson teammates at those meets.

  16. Why are we focusing on the one guys who decided not to run. What about all of the kids who went out and killed themselfs. Ok yeah tony is a great runner. But there are also a lot of other good runners in the state that are being overlooked and there hard work and races are being over looked. It's not fair to focus on the kid who didn't run when hundreds more went out and killed it this weekend and are not getting any love.

  17. Speaking of someone who's not getting any love, Jeff Wiseman has to be considered one of the best runners ever in PA to not win a state title! He went 1:51 indoors and 1:50 outdoors! That's incredible! He's also been hitting consistent 1:51 and 1:52's this whole season! His consistency was remarkable...and if he didn't take out the race like he did, it wouldn't have been such an awesome final! Kyle definitely found that last extra gear to beat him, but I would definitely say that Wiseman had the better season! He needs some love! What he did is remarkable!

    1. Your an idiot .Read your rant about Wiseman on Etrain too.
Never heard anyone ever say anything negative about Wiseman's running. He's all that, no one would argue. I had either one of them with the possible win.
But let's be honest here-Wiseman may have posted better times throughout the season, but maybe overall Francis was the smarter runner by not killing it every race. Because his goal was a win at States, which he realized.
You could make the same argument about Brehm. If anyone dares to doubt a Francis or a Brehm, well, shame on you.

    2. Watched Wiseman kill it at District 1 prelims and all I could think was, "why?". He didn't need to run that hard a week before States.

  18. Damn right brehm is an absolute animal on the track. He was born in Kenya and was raised by cheetahs in the wild. Whenever anyone challenges him on the track he just remembers having to run down antelope in order to eat and survive. He channels this energy into sodomizing his competition and don't even think about out kicking this ferocious beast. Pennsylvania is basically a joke for this badass and at the end of the day he is just gonna throw up the money hands and shout "heil Manzeil." If you think you have a chance against this kid you better think again and go try getting your dick wet elsewhere.
