More Weekend Action! Delco's, Baldwin, and more!

21st White Rose Invitational
Patrick Reilly is working on his speed a bit winning the open 800 in 1:59.36. Big time race from Manheim Central’s freshman Cole Sunderland as he won the 1600 in 4:31.09, which just beat out his teammate Shaver by .02 seconds. They could be a deep 4x8 medal sleeper with those two along with Nat Erk who ran 2:00.11 in the open 8 for second place. I would have liked to see Jd Groff push it a bit more, but he got his districts SQS clocking 9:48.

85th Annual John H. Shaner Memorial Track Meet
I was slightly disappointed with the 3200, because the Wyomissing duo, DiCintio and Shinn, we so solid indoors over 3000m and for them to run 9:47 and 9:57 seems a bit off. I hope in the next two weeks they drop into the mid to low 9:30’s. Jared Luckanitz of GM ran quite well for the win, clocking 9:43.56.

Luckanitz also took the 1600m run in another strong time, 4:25.49. He’ll be a force to watch for at districts and could very well make it to the state meet. Behind him was Dylan Eddinger of Boyertown (4:27.01) and Colby Geary (4:27.82). I have no idea where these Boyertown kids are coming from, but they dropped a HUGE time of 8:01.20 in the 4x8, which just adds another team into the mix. Right now District 1 has over 8 teams with sub 7:56 potential; it’s crazy.

Eli Mercado must be an integral part of that relay and he also had a nice open 400m time of 51.08. He also placed second in the open 800m with a very strong 1:56.74 behind Andrew Miller of Wyomissing who ran 1:56.19. I wonder what Mercado split on that 4x8, but wow, what a triple for him. This is great practice for rounds by Mercado. D1 open 800m will be tough, but he will be a contender to make it to states. Also to note, Miller just keeps getting stronger, and he’s going to be a sleeper for a medal at states.

Behind them was Eddinger who on the triple ran 1:59.29! I have no idea where he came from, but he had a killer day. TV’s Josh Coakley ran a strong 1:58.10, while Colin Geary hit 2:00.58. This team should be able to scare 8 flat in the 4x8. Side note, DiCinto did run 2:00.08 in the open 800 as well.

North East Invitational
It’s always good to see running family legacies, and Noah Curtin is looking very strong for Mercyhurst Prep. The freshman ran 10:10.11 to win the 3200. Not much else to note from this meet.

Lower Merion Invitational
Marlowe Tooles ran 1:59.90 to win the 800m run and qualified for districts in a great solo effort.
The Conestoga boys came off big races at Henderson to run strong 1600m times. Sjoreen won in 4:25.84 and Marston placed second in 4:28.80.

Boys Delco Championships
James Hare ran a killer time o 1:56.42 to win the 800m in the American conference (AC). He beat out Joe Sullivan who was 1:59.02, Andrew Garrett (1:59.27), and Watson Hanson (2:00.17). Hare also won the 1600 in a swift 4:22.94. He’ll be able to mix it up at Districts in the 1600, no question he’ll be able to break 4:20.

Kevin James ran a fantastic triple to take Gold’s in the 800 (1:55.85), 1600 (4:14.22), and the 3200 (9:28.52). Joining him in triple duty was Jim Belfatto who took 3 bronzes (4:17.92, 1:58.42, and 9:44.52). I’m not sure if they purposely had them getting specific places, but Kevin James is looking spectacular right now. I’m not sure what he runs at states, but he could definently drop under 9:10 if he chooses to run that at states.

The silver medalists were Nick Smart in the 1600 (4:16.34) who also ran 2:03.51 in the open 800. I’m not sure if they told him to shut down or if he was injured in the race. If someone knows, please post!
Ramsey Kurkula did his best to stay with Kevin James and came out with a big PR of 1:56.10. I hope he runs the open 8 at Districts, because I doubt UD will get into the finals of the 4x8. Chris Kazanjian took second in the 3200 with a time of 9:36.59. Chris hasn’t been running too many fast 800’s recently, and I wonder if he’ll go for the 3200 at districts. He should be able to dip into the 9:20’s seeing as he always peaks very well.

41st Annual Baldwin Invitational
The 800 at Baldwin apparently went out in 58 high, which means Dylin Wilhoite closed very quickly to fun 1:55.73 for the win. Penn Hill’s runners are always dangerous at outdoor states and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him dip into the low 1:53’s. James Smith ran a very strong double and looks to be a real contender in the 1600 with a 4:18.61 and a second place finish in the 800 (1:56.44).

Right behind Smith in the Mile were the two SV boys who are improving so quickly. Brett Foster got himself under 4:20 (4:19.58) and Mike Kolor ran 4:21.95. Kolor outkicked Colin Martin (4:22.00) and Brent Kennedy (4:23.60). I’m very excited about what the Seneca Valley runners are doing. Both of them doubled back in the 800; Foster ran 1:57.25 and Kolor ran 1:59.30. Their teammate Tanner Quiggle (awesome last name) won the 1600 with a solo’d 4:28.96, and Bradley Banks placed second in the 400m with a swift 50.23… can anyone say 4x8??

Not sure what’s up with Colin Martin, but he has not been racing very well recently. He was decent at Penn Relays and doubled a 4:22 and 9:16 this weekend, but last year he was running 4:18/9:14’s and indoors he was killing it. Not sure if a small injury slowed his training down.  Brent Kennedy on the other hand is just getting back into the swing of things and Kiski will probably drop a strong 4x8 lead by Patrick Miller who ran a very solid 1:57.58. They’ve got a solid 400 runner in Ben Kinnamon who ran 50.77 and could move up, along with the younger Kennedy, Eric, who ran 4:32 in the 1600.

As I mentioned earlier Martin won the 3200 in 9:16.34. He had to outkick Matt Mcgoey (9:16.76) to do it however. Really solid race for Mcgoey, who will look to beat Martin at districts for the title. Caleb Wakely ran a strong 9:27.88 and he should qualify for states out of district 7.

P.S. The 4x8 fun will be out tomorrow at some point.

  1. Other meets of note:
Stan Morgan - Brehm doubles 4:23/9:34. I'll leave it at that and let everyone else speculate about his fitness. Jonathan Goodson of Boiling Springs, which I believe is AA, doubles 4:24/1:56

Neshaminy - Bensalem 8:08 4x8 without Kyle Francis, who ran 4:19 for 1600. A week after Kyle ran a 4:19 full mile at Lehigh, he dropped his 1:50. If I had to guess, he's probably around 1:52/3 right now, and should definitely challenge Logue and Wiseman. Matt Brown of Roman Catholic comes in 2nd with a 4:20, which might get him to states out of D12, and Rock Fortna, a soph from CBW, is 3rd in 4:24. Big PRs for Brown and Fortna. CBW also had a soph win the 3200 in 10:05, to go along with their 2 sub-10 frosh from Helman. District 1 XC team qualifier next year?

  2. This is what I don't get about OH, what the point of running so hard at that meet. I get putting guys on the triple to win DELCO's, but if the team win is the goal, no need to have the top three milers go below 4:30, let alone 4:20. The do this all the time then come up small at states. They've got PCL's and Districts coming up so look for major burnout again at states.

    1. At this point in the year, every team has cut back on its training/workouts. This makes it more feasible for guys to race hard (and really fast!) every weekend given the increased recovery during the week, especially now that dual meets are over.

By your logic, everyone who ran a nice double/triple this weekend will burn out: James Hare, James Smith, Colin Martin, Brehm (who is hopefully just getting started), etc. Not to mention the guys who ran 2 separate invites over 2-3 days.

TL;DR: O'Hara won't burn out as long as they aren't overtraining AND overracing

    2. Also, Ohara did that over a 3 day meet, it was not a one day attempt.

    3. Smart probably shut down later in the 800, 50 minutes after the mile.

I have some moderate quality race videos of the 800 and 1600 races (divisions were run together), trying to find a site to post on....anybody got ideas?

    4. WCH will probably blow off Chesmonts even though they'd have a legit shot at winning this year. States is the bigger picture.

    5. James could you post the link on here of where u post the videos

    6. James if you put them on youtube just send me the link and I'll post it on here. Also let Penntrack know and they might put them up on their site. I've always had trouble getting them to do it, but then again they hate Jarrett and I.

I've got one final tomorrow then I'll be putting up a bunch of posts. I've got a 4x8 list that I need to scan into my computer and it will be posted tonight; I apologize for the delay.

  4. James Smith DOES NOT run the 1600 at WPIAL qualifiers, Todd Gunzenhauser wins in 4:29

  5. Eddinger came from the Berks Bruins hockey club...kid was skating a bunch but had never run competitively until like two years ago. He ran a 5K road race in like 17:30 and I guess decided to try his hand at racing...

  6. Russell wins the 800 at chesmonts over Caldwell. He was in 2nd through the first 400 at like 59 or 58 high then put the boosters on in the last 100 and gapped Caldwell a bit. His second lap was around a 55 mid or so. His official time was in the 1:54.2's. He may in 1:52.5 shape in a race that didn't go out so slow.

Caldwell doubled back from a 1:54 4x800 split which put him at a disadvantage. Both are great runners but Russell is somewhat in a league of his own at this point in the track world, with the exception of Francis logue wiseman and maybe cather when if comes to the 800.

    1. By no means is Russell in a league of his own in the 800m. He's talented, but by no means is he even top 5 in my opinion. Logue, smart, Wiseman, Francis, Caldwell, Garton, Becich, Lewis... need I go on? Caldwell was tired off a fast split and not too long of a break in between. In the 1600m, yes, he's by far in his own league. 3200... debatable. You could argue for Wilson, Barchet, and Deluca, but kinda in his own league.

    2. Yeah, well after he got done with the 800 word is he went over and won the high jump, then took third in the pole vault and medaled in the discus. Can Logue or Wiseman do that?

      Delete
    3. Wiseman probably. Logue no.

    4. I wasnt talking about the 800, i was talking about running in general

    5. Word on the street is that Becich is running with a stress fracture, which would explain his 2:01 at WPIAL Qualifiers. I wouldn't expect too much more from him through the rest of the season.

  7. Central League: Holm takes Mile in 4:20. Sjoreen 4:21, Marston 4:22. Chris Kazanjian with a 4:24.
800 was fast as well. Ramsey Kerkula , Evan Emmanual, and Soham Kamat. 155,155,157
