The Varsity Classic Results

Hey everyone, I hope all of you are getting some good training in despite the bad weather!

I was super impressed by Kyle Francis' double victory in the Varsity Classic yesterday (at the armory), he went 1:54.4 in the 800 and 4:22.5 in the Mile. The Bensalem kicks always peak very well and he's coming into great shape right now. Both the 800 and the Mile are pretty stacked and I'm not sure which one he will end up choosing with that strong 800. He's got a great kick and if he's going to double back for the DMR (which seems likely) then I believe going for the Mile is the best call for him. He could very well compete for the gold in the open 800 as well.

Sam Ritz also impressed in the Mile running 4:22.9 finishing second to Francis. They were 2 seconds ahead of FL finalist Louis Corgliano, which probably means a quick last 400 for both Ritz and Francis. Ritz is running well and I have no doubt will be sub 4:20 by states so look for him in the mix in the Mile. Reiny Barchet finished 4th place, but the website doesn't have his time. Based on the results he's most likely in the high 4:25's which is impressive. If they go the DMR route he could be a good anchor if Russell is on the double with Mile and 3k.

Jaxson Hoey tried himself out at the 800 and it turns out he's got some real wheels as he finished 6th in 1:57.5. Going under 4:20 and 1:58 as a freshman indoors is extremely impressive, especially with time to spare in the season. He is going to be a scary anchor in the DMR and he's a threat to beat Russell in the Mile.

Gunnar Sjoreen also looked strong running 2:00.4. Hopefully the rest of Conestoga is coming along as strong as he is, if so they'll have some strong relay teams.

I also wanted to point out that Ross Wilson of CR North has not run a 3k yet this season and will be unable to run that event at states. It seems as though he might be going for the Mile/DMR double! If that's the plan it's quite an interesting choice.

  2. What's the deal with Nat'l signing day? Is it the last day a runner can sign with a college? I'm pretty sure there are runners who aren't on that list yet but they are probably running in college. Good runners too. Do you have to make your commitment by today?

    1. I believe today is the FIRST day you can make a written commitment to a college. All the previous ones were verbal I believe.

    2. When is Henderson going to start qualifying dudes for the 3000, there aren't many meets left before the State Talent Showcase.

    3. If they're going to go after the showcase championship they better get some guys in that event, they'll need every point they can get.

    4. Spoiler alert. Waltz at the Varsity classic was Henderson's last hope of having anyone in the 3k.

    5. Real spoiler alert - they'll run them all in the 3000 in time for states. To abandon it would be negligent.

    6. I should remind you that Russell is racing the hoey son and not the father, and has better pr's in that case. We don't know who will win but please stop acting like his dad's pr's make him the obvious pick haha.

  11. The PA record is a done deal, WCH is going for the national record which is within reach.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That national record is 10:02 for indoors. With Russell already at 4:11 it's going to be tough to find 13 seconds to drop.

    2. Moy's good for at least 6 and there's at least 4 on the 400/800 legs, that's getting close.

      Delete
    3. ^ combined 4 on the 400/800 that is, not 4 on each.

      Delete
    4. Moy should be able to get 3:04. To me that's just incredible how big of a difference there is from how he can run on the course and on the track.

      Delete
    5. Agree@3:04. He ran 3:06 yesterday & it was only 2nd time running the 1200.

      Delete
    6. Not really incredible. There are several mid - distance runners who come to mind that are less than amazing in XC...Logue, Huemmler, Francis to name a few. Also the converse is true - some XC studs just don't transition to the track so great either.

      Delete
  12. Logue breaks state record in 1k. (2:28.6) However, 2 years ago Ned Willig ran 2:25 but got disqualified. So it is a fast time but shouldn't be the state record.

    1. You can tell the 1k isn't run much in Pa. The time is alright but nothing overly impressive.

    2. It converts to about a 1:53 flat 800. That's not even close to 1:48.

      Delete
    3. I thought Rivera had gone faster or equally as fast?

      Delete
  13. Ned ran 2:22 last year, not 2:25. He killed the state record, but since Watkins cut in early, so did Willig and they got DQ'd. Without the early cut in, that the official told Watkins to do, they probably would have gone 2:24 or 2:23.

    1. Times when cutting the course are not convertible, they're not even legit, or worth talking about, that's why they got DQ'd

      Delete
    2. You can't convert it but they are definitely somewhat legit. If you think Ned/Zavon were going to run 6 seconds slower from cutting a very little amount then I don't think anyone will change your mind. I just watched the video, Ned cut in 7.43 seconds before the cone. I then timed the time it took for them to start and go around the curve, it took roughly the same time as it did for them on the inside. I can't 100% sure say that they would have ran the exact same time if they didn't do that cut in, but it would have been close. All in all, the early cut in may have gave them an extra second or two, but he still would have broken the PA record in sub 2:25. If you doubt that then... well... no clue what to tell you.

    2. Since Millrose didn't see it fit to ask Russell to run in the first go around of invites he ought to decline now, stay home and play some Xbox, he has nothing to prove up there.

      Delete
    3. The first round of invites are runners that qualified for millrose from meets at the armory. Since Russell didn't run in any of those meets he couldn't get one. He got an invite as fast as possible for someone that didn't qualify through racing.

  21. Somehow over the last couple of years I’ve managed to consistently underestimate O’Hara so why should this indoor season be any different. First in XC they bounced back from huge losses to graduation last year to take 3rd at states in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Now in early February a 7:50 on the 4x800, which is just outstanding. I can’t wait to see what their DMR will do. I’ll be sure to predict no better than 10:20 since my underestimating always seems to works out for them.

Russell’s mile had to be the best races he’s ever had a on the track, or maybe ever. He’s never been afraid to take the lead or push the pace, but for possibly the first time on the track this one worked out great. He’d been clipped down the stretch quite a few time last year in big races but for I think the first time in a mile, he took the kick out of any of the speedsters. After a somewhat slow 63 first quarter he just took control. The kid from Canada who came in second made a decent move but at a perfect time for Russell as he got to hang back for a change and take over near the end rather than trying to fend off a kicker. I still think the 3000/3200 is his niche, which is tough to say after he goes 4:11 and breaks the state record in the mile. It was nice to see him give his coach a hug right after the finish too. Throw in a 10:27 DMR without Russell and that’s a pretty good day for WCH on the national stage. Stay humble!

    1. Are your guys going after the state title or what? If so you better get Russell, Barchet, Collins Knapp and Stratman qualified in the 3000 soon.

      Delete
    2. Seriously, Barchet, 5th in XC, #3 returning 3200 time and he's messing around in the mile? Collins and Stratman both sub 9:30 last year. Plus E Martin injured and out of the picture, NA unable to run/train due to weather, that's a huge open door. What are you thinking?

      Delete
    3. Rjjl isn't Kevin kelly.... do people actually believe he is?

      Delete
    4. Dominate xc then stay away from the 3000? That makes no sense. An indoor title would be better than any individual or relay medal.

      Delete
    5. The State has too many good distance runners to win a State Championship with only distance runners. There is nothing Henderson could do to beat Cheltenham or Pennsbury. I'm sure they would like to win, but nobody really cares about the State team championship indoors. The Henderson guys just want to run fast. I'm sure they'll be happy to keep showing progress between now and NBIN.

      Delete
    6. Pennsbury and Cheltenham might beat each other up leaving it wide open. 43 points should win it. Moy/Thompson in the 800 could get some points, Moy/Russell in the mile and Barchet/Russell in the 3000 should garner some big points. Then the rest of them could pick up a few here and there. It would come down to the DMR. O'Hara is probably going 4x800 so there you have it. - JEB

    7. Maybe Henderson has their sites set nationally and not on the state team title.

      Delete
    8. Nationals is irrelevant, it a few weeks after. It depends whether a team is about a team victory or not. Pennsbury and Cheltenham have the same dilemma.
