9/13 Quick Results

I have a little bit of free time here, so I’m going to just try to run through as many results as we currently have. Look for a more comprehensive analysis later.

Briarwood:

No full list of results yet but Malvern did beat out O’Hara by 31 points. That’s not much of a surprise for me but rather an affirmation that Malvern is the better team right now. Looks like Jaxson Hoey won it in 15:30, which is a great time for him and he beat out Brophy and James, quite a feat. Brophy coming in second over James is a bit of a surprise, definitely a good finish for him. No way of telling about how well James did right now without times. May have been a good race for him and he just couldn’t push past Hoey or Brophy.

Bulldog Invitational:

From the small school division nothing to set the world on fire, Julian Degroot-Lutzner of Masterman wins it in 16:21. Sophormore Liam Galligan takes second in 16:31 followed by Sam Ebby of Harriton in 16:39.

In the large school division: Bensalem takes the team title with a 16 second spread edging out St. Joe’s  Prep, WC East and Methacton, respectively. Jeff Kirshenbaum of Methacton with the win in 16:15 followed by Scarpill of CB South (16:18), Fisher of St. Joe’s Prep (16:20), Pisacono also of St. Joe’s Prep (16:20) and Diestelow of WC East (16:27).

Cherokee Challenge: (In New Jersey)

They do two miles at this meet. Andrew Marston took second by two seconds with a 9:29, which is right about in line with his 8:51 3k he already has on the season. Alex Knapp took 9th with a 9:50 and Henry Sappey of Downingtown West in 11th with a 9:54. Further down the list we had Ryan Barton of DWest in 10:07. Then PJ Murray of Conestoga ran 10:08 and beat Alex Sauer of Pennsbury by .11 seconds. Sauer in turn beat Nick Cruickshank of Conestoga by .01 seconds. How’s that for a tight finish?

Boardman Spartan Invitational: (In Ohio)

The times here were FAST. Lots of guys under 16. I am in no way familiar with this meet and I’ll leave it to Evan to analyze, but Matt McGoey and Hunter Wharrey of North Allegheny took 2nd and 3rd in the D1 race with 15:41 and 15:44, respectively. North Allegheny’s next man was Scott Seel in 16:37.

Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational:

Very tight finish up top of the team race with Carlisle taking first on a tie-break, Scranton Prep only 8 points back and State College 1 point behind Scranton Prep. Griffin Molino won in 15:43, Jack Tidball took 3rd in 16:02, Zach Brehm came in 4th with a 16:13, and Joe DeAngelo ran 16:21.

  2. Wasn't that course record the 15:41 Shearn and Russell ran in 2012?

    1. No, the course record is 15:19 or 15:18 held by Joe Rosa. I think, but I'm not sure, Hoey's time is the second best, since Jim Rosa went 15:38 there. Rumor was that they lengthened the course last year, but who knows about this year. It is a USATF confirmed 5K however.

    2. The man handing out the awards at Briarwood said it was the third best behind two brothers at 15:19.

    3. But the course was lengthened by what most people say 15 seconds. Hoey probably should be #1

  3. MP has work to do. 2007 and 2008 North Penn teams and 2012 COH team all had 5 runner below 16:45.

    1. The course has been lengthened since then so if you go back to the old course malvern would have had 5 guys under 16:45

    2. It wasn't extended that much doane ran 17:21 and wills ran 17:13 doane would've been around 17:05-17:10 and wills would've been around 17:00 on the old course

    3. the belmont 5k was remeasured before the 2013 xc season. it was short 110 meters. those meters were added to the front loop- 55 meters each loop. 15:30 in 2014 is better than 15:19 when the rosas ran. hoey would have run 15:10 on the old belmont. hoey is absolutely the best runner in the state.

  4. Looks like Bulldog was adjusted to make it a true 5k this year after last years 3 mile race.

    1. Gotta give Etrain and Forrest credit for this because posters on the blogs knew those courses were short so the talk probably got around. This year reports came in that Abington, Sharp and now Bulldog all lengthened their courses to make them real 5K's. Too bad RWB didn't get the memo.

  5. I dont think you guys realize how good the performances at briarwood were. The course was extended last year by a good amount, and remains extended. It was also very cold, muddy, and it was raining for all of the championship race. The top 10 was out in sub 5. The course was about 30-40 seconds slower today than a flat 5k. Crazy performances.

    1. Does that mean if it were run in lehigh, hoey would have broken 15, brophy would have been around 15 and james 15:10. That is plain sick.

  6. Hoey won in 1530
    Brophy second in ~1540
kev James was right under 1555

  7. This season is shaping up to be awesome, there's no clear cut top team. Malvern and O'Hara are both probably overhyped and overrated. Deep teams with a solid 1-7 like Conestoga and Dwest would crush them in a big meet.

    1. Not necessarily. Although Malvern only has 5 legit guys, their top 3 is ridiculous, and their next two are right around Dwest and Conestoga's 4 and 5. They are very dangerous if nobody gets injured. Also NA is looking very strong as well.

Either way, to say Dwest or Conestoga would crush Malvern or O'hara is ludicrous.

    2. Both stoga and west would put their 7th guy in before OH or Malvern's fourth. Even if they get shut out in the top 3 that wins a dual meet every time. In a big meet a hundred runners packed in packed in 16:45 - 17:45 they'd win even bigger.

    3. If you get shut out of the top 3 you physically cannot get a dual meet. However the bigger the meet the more a good pack is necessary

    4. OH or Malvern couldn't shut out Conestoga or Dwest in the top 3.

  8. Pat James from O'Hara won the JV race in 17:35 and would've finished 25th in varsity race today... Is he another James brother?

  9. Hoey is the best in the state right now it's now even a question his race yesterday was sick

    1. No doubt. State top 5 would be:
      Hoey
      Abert
      Molino
      Brophy
      Marston.

  10. Do people still think that this year's class is a let down from previous years?

  11. What happened to Zach Brehm?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Brehm was never in the race he was about 10 seconds back at the mile, but he usually comes on strong at the end of the season molino was never really tested

  13. I have no idea how no one has mentioned Josh Hoey or Ryan James stepping up huge.
