Hi guys,
Last year Carlisle was the big name meet this weekend, but
this year it’s looking like Council Rock North is the place to be. But Carlisle
still has some names at it so if I have some free time later I will try to put
together a Carlisle preview as well.
I’d like to congratulate Forrest on 300,000 page views! He’s
done that pretty much on his own, Evan and I have only come on as writers recently.
That’s a milestone and thank you to everyone who reads the blog and helped it
get there.
Now onto some Council Rock North previewing:
Take a look at some of the teams attending:
Bensalem
Cardinal O’Hara (#2) (listed but I doubt it, can’t see why
they’d run an A squad after Foundation)
Central Bucks West (#8)
Conestoga (#4)
Council Rock North (#10)
Council Rock South
Downingtown West (#7)
On the team side this looks like Conestoga’s race to lose if
they are as good as they’re billed to be. That sentence has no malicious
undertone, rather Conestoga has looked good at all of the shorter distances
we’ve seen them at this year, so I think they’ll run well at 5k, but there’s
always that possibility they’re a bit slow over the first hard 5k race. But the
Marston-Nelson-Murray trio should be enough for Conestoga to just about put
away the meet. If Conestoga falters, D-West will be there to jump on them for
it. D-West lost to Conestoga by 52 points at the Cherokee Challenge, but most
of the difference came from the 3 and 4 guys. So if Shaun Bullock and Charlie
Barton can move up for D-West they will have a very real chance at winning the
invite. Some sleeper teams to win it are Central Bucks West and Council Rock
North. Both teams have looked good at recent dual-meets (I’m not sure of time
credibilities) and have outside chances to beat Conestoga or D-West, CRN
especially so since they are at home.
Here’s the picture on the individual side with my
predictions:
1.
Andrew Marston (#6)
2.
Casey Comber (#13)
3.
Henry Sappey (#33)
4.
Seth Slavin (#31)
5.
Matthew Scarpill (Just-Missed List)
6.
Brian Arita (#36)
7.
Rock Fortna (Just-Missed List)
8.
Ryan Barton
9.
Killian Nelson
10.
PJ Murray
11.
Andrew Hanna
12.
Nick Cruickshank
13.
Brian Mass
14.
James Cooper
15.
Shaun Bullock
16.
Declan McDonald
17.
Joe Maguire
18.
Charlie Barton
19.
Alex Ramirez
20.
Sean Griswold
Leading the way I think is Andrew Marston. He’s looked great
so far this season and I think is really breaking out even more this season. Comber’s
also looked good and I think he will give him a challenge and stay close, but
in the end I have Marston coming away with the win. Behind them I have Henry
Sappey in third over Seth Slavin. Sappey’s been a surprise this year and I
think he will continue to be so I’m picking him over Slavin. Then Matthew
Scarpill has looked better and better this season so he comes ready to play and
takes down 5th. While this is Arita’s home course and he may be a
bit low in my predictions, he’s just been solid but not great this season.
Behind that group is Rock Fortna, Ryan Barton, Killian Nelson and PJ Murray.
All are guys who have had good starts to this season and are looking to
continue to build towards a strong finish. This meet obviously isn’t as
star-studded as Foundation last week or Briarwood the week before, but there’s
a good group of runners here and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can
do.
-Cummings
P.S. There won’t be any Eastern PA Rankings for this week,
but I’m thinking it might be fun to give it a cool name. My current idea is “Beasts
of the East”. Let me know if you like the name or have a different idea.
Unfortunately, Conestoga is running their "B" team at Council Rock.
ReplyDeleteThis is very uninformed. You can't rank Scarpill so well off of a dual meet if you don't know other runners's dual meets. Very unhappy that runners whose teams get dual meet results have an advantage to the teams who don't have them put online.
ReplyDeleteActually it's the opposite, it's very informed, using all the info that's been made available.
DeleteYou can based your ranking off of what we know, the more data the better. That said, if you feel that one runner is faster, then we will know by this weekend.
DeleteIf you're runners are faster, they'll prove it on Saturday. Rankings never gave anyone an advantage.
ReplyDelete-GBC
what do you think will be the cut off time for states in D1 this season?
ReplyDelete16:25
DeleteCutoff last year was 16:15, Im going 16:08 cutoff this year.

I enjoy Chris andEvan previews. Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule. Here is my prediction:
ReplyDeleteComber, Marston, Sappey, Slavin, Arita
Now the shocker (assuming COH runs B squad): CBW, Stoga, DW, CRN.
I think CBW will have a bunch of runners just right behind Fortuna and Mass and they appear to be coming on strong.
yeahhhhhh, cbw isn't going to beat conestoga...
DeleteI have to disagree with your assessment of this meet an equal draw with Carlisle. There are 3 top 10 teams listed for both meets: OH, CBW and DW. Even taking those teams out the Carlisle meet is loaded with potential Top Ten top teams: Altoona, Carlisle, Cumberland Valley, Freedom, Henderson, LaSalle, Parkland, Red Land and State College. Those teams alone make for a better race (with apologies to CRN and Bensalem).
ReplyDeleteO'Hara girls are at Carlisle. CBW boys are not at Carlisle. Downingtown West will be at Carlisle for both genders.
DeleteGuys. On penn track west isn't even signed up for crn. They are signed up for Carlisle. Also stoga is running a b squad at crn, not coh. Stoga a is going to Rochester. Carlisle is the better meet of the two.
ReplyDeleteok, no big deal, just start over with the previews
DeleteDTW isn't going to council rock north. If stoga and ohara both don't run A squads, it'll be substantially less competitive. If Dtw, ohara, and stoga all don't run their top teams, I would project the top 10 teams to be
ReplyDeleteCBW
CBE
Twin Valley
Bensalem
CRN
Holy Ghost
Harriton
Great Valley
DTE
Neshaminy
I've heard from a couple runners that DTW would be attending, and I told Chris about it, which is why he wrote on it. I apologize if this was misinformation. I do hope however that we see them show up.
DeleteHow fast is the Council rock invitational course?
ReplyDeleteThe first 200m is fast and it narrows out at that point with a minor hill. The first 1400m are light, rolling hills into a very steep 150m hill called wood-chip. At the top runners take a left, which follows into a right onto another minor hill. It then has about a mile of fairly flat running. The last mile is basically the same as the first mile, except it is run backwards. wood-chip gives runners a big boost downhill on that last mile.
DeleteI would say it's a 6.0 out of 10 in terms of difficulty. There are some tight, winding turns on the second mile that slow runners down and the course can get pretty muddy. It's been rare to see runners break 16 minutes, but with the competition I would expect to see a few guys do it. We may even seen a CR by Comber if he is in the race. It's a shame 'Stoga isn't brining their 'A' team.
As for why would anyone go to CRN's invite over Carlisle, it usually comes down to location and travel distance for teams. Also it's a well run invitational, but it has not gotten a lot of interest in recent years. Invitationals fluctuate with competition. In the 1980's and '90's the big pre-state meet was at Steel City. Teams from all over the state used to travel their to compete during the first weekend in October. And now almost nobody goes.

Thanks Forrest, I appreciate it!
Deletewhy would anyone go to this race over Carlisle lol
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteHopefully I won't be disabled from posting here Forrest, Evan, and Chris, but Etrain and I just did a podcast preview of the Carlisle meet over for his blog if anyone wants to listen to it. We discussed a lot of different issues about the meet including both varsity races. Hope to see you all post a prediction too!
Thanks, Sean Collins
Sean I can't believe you would promote another outlet of information on my site!!
DeleteGlad to hear you and Jarrett are working together a little bit. I'll probably check out the pod cast later day. In all seriousness, thanks for the update :)
As for a Carlisle preview, I believe Chris is working on one now and I'll contribute to it through a comment.
You guys namely Forrest, Jarret, Chris, Evan and now Sean I guess do a great job contributing to both sites. Obviously, you guys are passionate about the sport and great writers as well. You guys should really try to link up with running site (Flotrack, Milesplit,…etc). Seriously, you guys have some talent.
ReplyDeleteWhere's RTJ and RJJL been? They were regulars here and on Etrain. Are they writing for those creeps at the other site now?
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that some have entered college and left the community, or are simply taking some time off from commenting.
DeleteYeah, where has RJJL been? I always enjoyed his comments.
DeleteWell, life happens and folks get busy. I agree that those guys could get together and create a site with a different vibe to put the hobbling Penntrack out of it's misery.
Money talks though. These guys have been contributing their talents and keen observations for free while maintaining regular full-time lives that include jobs, school, etc...I think if they wanted to make a go of it though, they could. Their style and perspective is fresh.
I've been working a lot. I still have absolutely no idea who RJJL is so not sure why he hasn't posted.

Comber from hatboro horsham wins with a 15:46
ReplyDeleteCarlisle results are up on runccrs.com. Brehm destroyed in 15:23, Hoey 7th. WCH and Dwest tied for fourth.
ReplyDeleteHoey almost passed out from heat exhaustion. He collapsed 4 times in the final 100m
DeleteThat explains a lot
DeleteHoey had a comfortable lead on Brehm with 150 meters to go.
DeleteBallsy to get across the line if he went down four times.
DeleteCRN meet was so hot- times could have been so much faster. Hopefully a warm post season atleast!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Conditions for CRN weren't too great. Makes times even more impressive.
DeleteReally? What time were these races? I was actually at a college meet and it was warm but not so unbearable that runners were passing out.
DeleteIt was about 80 ish degrees and humid, and more than half of it was in the blazing sun.
DeleteWhere are CRN invitational results?
ReplyDeleteThe weather was so bad at CRN hence why so many good runners had bad days.
ReplyDeleteSo the same could be said for Carlisle?
DeleteI heard it was worse there but not sure why...race time may gave been a factor?
The race was at 12:30, it was like 80something degrees out, and 95% of the course was in the blazing sun
DeleteWas looking at the DC meet pics and it looked like kev James had a wrap on his lower leg... Is he hurt or something?
ReplyDeleteThat "wrap" looks like a black sock to me. He won. Quite certain he's not hurt.
