10/12 Weekend Preview (With some results)-BREAKING NEWS

BREAKING NEWS:http://triblive.com/sports/hssports/otherhighschoolsports/4842608-74/kennedy-kiski-title#axzz2hQwTniex Brent Kennedy is out for the remainder of the season with Shin problems. This is a huge blow to state competition, but I hope he recovers soon and will be ready for track.

Results- 10/10
Midwestern Athletic Conference
Quaker Valley dominated this meet, but the big name is Zach Skolnekovich who wins the meet as just a freshman in a solid time of 17:12. He’s a kid to watch in the future.

Westmoreland County Coaches Association
Patrick Miller and Eric Kennedy are looking very solid though finishing 1-2 respectively. Please post if you have any news on Brent’s health status.

Previews -10/12

58th Annual William Tennent Invitational
This course was changed last year and the new layout is pretty good, It’s still an extremely fast course. There is a pretty good chance I will be there during the Boys Varsity Race @ 2:30 since I’ll be home for fall break. This is a tune up for a lot of teams so look for some quick times across the board. Not sure if any top guys like Comber will be racing, especially since Wilson and Cummings won’t be. I’m excited to see how Masterman stacks up against some of these AA and AAA teams. Per usual it should be a good season ending invitational before most post-season racing begins.

DELCO Championships
This should be a very O’Hara dominated meet, much like last season. I am excited, however, to see how the Kazanjian brothers stack up against the O’Hara squad. There will also be breakout stud Connor Holm who has placed top 3 in some pretty big invitationals this year and now we can to see where he is come post-season racing.

Mid-Penn Conference Championships
I am so hype for this race, possibly more so than Reebok… which I cannot wait for. Let’s see what we’ve got here:

PA #4 - Lower Dauphin; PA#5 - Red Land; PA #6 - State College; PA#6 – Carlisle along with a strong, young Cumberland Valley squad.
We’ll get to see who is truly deserving of that #6 spot as SC and Carlisle battle on a neutral course for the first time, along with how good Lower Dauphin is. I think they can win by about 20 to 30 points, but I’m really hoping they have devolved a 5th man.  We also get to see Red Land continue their hot streak.

Not to mention the great individual battle that we’ll see out front:
PA#3 – Zach Brehm; PA#11 – Jeff Groh; PA#17 – Aaron Lauer; PA#18 – Cole Nissley; PA #30 Zach Seiger; PA#44 – Aiden Demko (yet to race) along with Josh Santeusanio who is on the just missed list.
This should be a lot of fun all around and the biggest meet as far as PA goes this weekend.

Reebok Manhattan Invitational
This race is stacked per usual. We’ve got 3 PA teams in the Eastern States Race: WCH, DTW, and Pennsbury. I’m excited to see how DTW and PB stack up against NJ teams such as Millburn (NJ #9) and Middletown No. (NJ #6), while Henderson should hopefully take care of Don Bosco (US #24 and NJ #2), Liverpool (US#19), Fayetteville-Manlius (US#18), and Tatnall (US#15). I’m not sure how close they’ll get to CBA (US #1), but last year they were 100 points away, so if they could close that gap to about 75 I think that’d be looked upon nicely by their squad.

Some names to look out for up front will be: NJ’s Liam Mullet who just ran 15:50 at Homdel (Harriman ran 16:12 last season for reference) and won NJ’s runner of the week. Middletown No.’s top guy is Tom O’Neil who won XC MoC’s for NJ last season which is extremely impressive. We’ll also get to see Mickey Burke of Rush-Henrietta (US #17), and you can probably put a couple strong CBA kids up there as well. And don’t forget about Don Bosco’s stud Kyle Levermore. He didn’t race at Carlisle, but I’m sure he’ll race here. He’s better shorter distances so the 4k could give him an advantage to use his 8:55 3200 speed/strength.

From PA we’ll get to see Junior Stud’s Sam Webb and Sam Ritz race for the second time this season. Both of them had solid season openers, but nothing overwhelmingly impressive. I’d love to see strong 4k’s from them and somewhere in the top 10 to 15. As for Tony Russell I think he can very well win this race, despite Burke’s ranking nationally. If Barchet can stay with him for most of the race I think he can take a top 5 finish as well.

  1. This has been a strange year weather wise. Cool weekend weather in September helped bring out some fast times for early in the year. Then last weekend it was so hot it not only impacted performances but cancelled Paul Short. Now tomorrow it looks like we might get enough of a break in the rain to get the races in but the courses will surely be sloppy.

Hopefully the DELCO championships stay on schedule but the championship course includes crossing a small creek…which probably isn’t so small at this moment...but hopefully is back to normal by race time. Getting up that steep hill after the creek could be muddy mess though.

At the Reebok, it will be interesting to see WCH and CBA square off. If CBA is at a similar point in their training as WCH, I think this could be a very close race, a lot closer than the 100 point difference from last year. I have no idea what kind of shape CBA is in or what talent they have but they’re ranked #1 so they’ve got to have a bunch of sub 9:20 3200 guys. I’m biased towards WCH though so I’m going out on a limb and predicting a Henderson upset victory by a narrow margin. This team is as solid 1 – 7 as any team in recent PA history and could arguably turn out to be better than Coatesville’s 2006 team. That potential still may not be enough to beat CBA on a course that’s probably more their turf (in early October no less), but I believe they have a pretty good shot tomorrow, hopefully enough to keep me from looking too foolish!

    1. Good post about this years weather, but a little optimistic at Reebok.

  2. The rankings just came out and i would love to know how they come up these lists. WCE is still in the top 10 somehow while state college and malvern are left out. CRN is seventh ad malvern has beat them twice and continues to be left out

    1. There's politics on that site. That's why etrain and Forrest are so much better. They do their homework, reviewing results, talking with runners and considering fans comments/opinions. Anybody paying attention knows Malvern is top 10 right now.

    2. I honestly don't know how they come up with everything. I talked with Don Rich and Lex at Paul Short and there was a lot of anonymity towards the blog, (both Etrain and I) along with tons of arrogance about how much they "know". It was extremely frustrating to talk with them.

    3. Malvern is listed with AA schools

    4. You mean animosity, right? Those guys do an ok job, but I definitely get that arrogance vibe from them too...like they invented running or something.

They probably hate the fact that readers are far more engaged and the posts (and comments)are way more lively & interesting on your blog than their site. How many times a day do you think they check on here? A lot is my guess.

    5. Malvern is listed with the AA, but omitted from the combined public/private schools top 10, which is ridiculous. I agree with the above sentiments, Etrain and now Forrest put much more research, thought and effort into their work. The top 10 on this blog has much more credibilty.

    6. The difference is for etrain and forrest and their readers, running is a passion. For the other guys covering the sport is a job. They're decent but it seems like effort isnt always there. The top 10 is often late. This one looks like someone woke up, realized the top 10 update was due and went to this site "people are talking up henderson, lets make them number one, the wce kid ran good lets make them number 6, CRN is always good and i know the coach so they've got to be top ten." No real discussion or reasoning given.

    7. I have never heard of Etrain, Forrest or their blogs.

    9. I'm sure it's Don but obviously he's lying. Everyone knows about these blogs.

  3. Not sure how fast Tennant will be tomorrow considering the course will probably be a swamp.

  4. Any Tennent people here to comment on whether or not their course is slop ?

  5. According to Manhattan Invite site, Kyle Levermore is a "scratch"

  6. To anyone who cares about mid-penn results tomorrow: it is going to be extremely muddy and wet making the results interesting to see. It has been raining in this area for 2 days straight, basically none stop. So clearly times won't be fast but it could tell a lot about who can overcome the elements going into championship season.

  7. Do you think Rose Tree will be so swampy that they might have to use the "Bulldog" course?

    1. They've only changed the course for Hurricane Floyd like 15 years ago so there probably not changing it.
