Top League?

At the start of this season there was tons of talk about Ches-Mont dominance like back in '06, but it seems the tides may have turned after the emergence of Mid-Penns.

Top Mid-Penn Runners
Brehm (3), Groh (11), Lauer (17), Nissley (18), Seiger (30)
Score = 79
Top Mid-Penn Teams
Lower Dauphin (4), Red Land (5), Carlisle (6), State College (6)

Top Ches-Mont Runners
Russell (2), Cummings (10), Barchet (14), Stratman (32), Collins (38)
Score = 96
Top Ches-Mont Teams
Henderson (2), Just Missed (Top 20)- DTW, GV, WCE

Thoughts?

  1. Forrest - Interesting comparison! I admire your work and the time you dedicate to PA cross country!

Top Mid-Penn runners come from 3 different schools and a large geographic area.
Top Ches-Mont runners - 4 from one school and the other from a school across town. On paper, it looks like the only way WCH can be beat is by forming a team that consists of the top 5 runners from an entire District!?

  2. Of course WPIAL would beat them both.

    1. Of course they would. They ARE the only premier XC in PA.

  3. Haha, leave it to Pittsburgh to initiate the trash talking.

  4. Chesmonts is off to a slow start but they were last year too. WCE was hot from the get go in 2012 but WCH, GV and Dwest didn't pull it together until early/mid October. Then a couple of individual guys came out of nowhere from the other schools. Chesmonts is the toughest league still.

  5. Speaking from someone that was on the GV team, their training isn't designed to peak until districts and then hold on to that peak until States. Even if they weren't injured, they wouldn't be making a lot of noise until about chesmonts. Injures have torn apart that team though.

I'm not from DTW but I assume their training is similar from runners I've known in the past. I am sure DTW will pull it together at districts and have fast times down. I hope they go to Paul Short so I can see how fast they can go on an easy course.

Mid-Penn looks very impressive though. The balance of power may be changing in the State, only time will tell.

  6. I was under the impression that DTW trained in the same manner as WCH, if not actually train with the Henderson team? DTW is a young team that will do well with experience. I have heard on this site that WCH has just now started doing "workouts" so clearly they are in it for the long haul.

    1. Dtw doesn't train with Henderson at all. A couple runs in the summer but besides that the teams are rivals.

    2. DTW trains a lot differently from WCH. They are always on the track while Henderson rarely is.

    3. Seriously, is that a good thing?

  7. I expect to see more Chesmont runners in the top 50 in the next two weeks. Willig, Diestelow, Kienzle, Smith, Caldwell, Moy, Knapp, Waltz could all get there, probably some combination of 5 or 6 of them will make it.

Totally agree...a lot of the chesmont guys like Willig, Diestelow and even the Henderson guys peak at the right time, second half of the season. there were a lot of PRs at districts last year by that crew. It will be interesting to see if dtw's young guys pay the price for the heavy mileage that they had to run to get so fast early in the year.

  9. Interesting data from Penntrack if you look up all-time results from the District Champs. They have all times since 2004. Going to the top 150, 11 teams have full teams in at that point.
    1-CRN-60 points(11 athletes in the top 150)
    2-WCH-81(15 in the top 150)
    3-Coateville-127(9)
    4-North Penn-178(8)
    5-Hatboro-Horsham-194(7)
    6-Unionville-252(5)
    7-Upper Dublin-348(5)
    8-WCE-376(5)
    9-Great Valley-442(5)
    10-Wissahickon-444(5)
    11-Haverford-494(5)
Downingtown West, CB South, CB West, CB East and Lower Merion all had 4 scorers in the top 150. This takes out some good pre-2004 runners, but gives a good picture of the top district 1 runners over the last decade.

    1. That analysis is distorted because Lehigh was 200 yards short before 2009, so it's not a fair comparison.

    2. Lehigh was not 200 yards short. In 2009, the course was long because the officials put the cones in the wrong place at the start. Every other year, it's been the same.

    3. 2009 was the first full 5K. The years before that were short. They had like 50 guys breaking 16:00 every year before 2009. A few broke 15:00

    4. Generally, someone who breaks 16:00 at Lehigh today would be at least sub 9:50 on the 3200 in track season. If you look at the runner from 2004-2008 who broke 16:00, the weren't even close so obviously the course was messed up back then.
