Weekend Results - 6:30

6:30 Edits-- Conestoga in the Eastern Race, Mid-Penn Update and William Tennent Results
-- Also to note, Stratman lost his shoe 300m into the race at Manhattan.

In the Manhattan JV Invitation Will Stuart of West Chester Henderson won his section (C) in a swift clocking on 13:47 (a 13 second victory). Last season Ricky Waltz ran 13:37.00 in his JV showing t Manhattan, so I'm pretty impressed with Stuarts race this season. The rest of Henderson's JV didn't look great, which tells me they don't have great depth, but I'm excited to see their varsity race.

In the Varsity A race Christian Kardish ran 13:24. I think he'll make it back to the state championships, but he doesn't seem the same since his injury last season.

Tony Russell wins the Varsity Race in a swift clocking of 12:20.00 which is tied for 13th all-time. And 4 seconds faster than last season. Not super impressed with the time, but a win is a win and this is a huge invitational. The junior phenom’s Sam Webb and Sam Ritz placed 20th and 22nd respectively in 12:45 and 12:47.

Henderson’s Boys Finished: 26th- Barchet, 33rd – Knapp, 53rd - Waltz, 55th – Collins.

Stratman and Moy both didn’t race very well and Henderson placed 4th overall. On the bright side they placed 78 points behind CBA which is better than last season. On a different coin, they only beat Tatnall by 47 points, and they did much better against them at Carlisle without Russell.

This squad is really confusing me, but I think they’re good enough for top 15 in the nation, but I don’t think they’re deserving of #1 in PA. The “workout” they did this week might have hurt them more than anticipated. Keep in mind they are trying to peak for nationals, so I’m not worried about the shape they’ll be in come later November and December, but will they be ready by the State Meet?

I like the shape Pennsbury is in though, placing 59 and 60 as there 2-3 guys. I think they're fighting for a 4th or 5th spot in District 1 right now if I had to guess.

As for Downingtown West their freshmen are running really well and they had a 7 second spread 1-5. If they can get those runners 20 to 30 seconds faster they'll be in fantastic shape in District 1. I'm just not sure if they'll get there.

Conestoga dominates the Varsity G race, scoring only 51 points! They had a 39 second spread 1-5 and looked really strong all the way. If they were in the Eastern States Race they would have scored 287 points based on their times (good for 8th place). This team should be a lock for 3rd place out of District 1 right now. It seems as though their top 2 is right around CRN's 2-4.

Also, Update from Mid-Penn's: State College comes back strong after a week off and grabs the Victory! SC's bus never showed up and they had to drive over to the meet, arriving just 20 minutes before. Just relieved to get there on time they raced as a pack through the first mile before slightly breaking up. Cather took 6th place. This team needed that week off and they proved they can run with some of the top squads.

58th William Tennent Invitational
A nice win for Caldwell over Diestelow before post-season rolls around. I think he'll be able to run fast on Lehigh's course. William Tennent looks good once again as they held a 28 second spread. I think they'll be in contention to make it out of District 1. As for CRN Laitman looks to be the solid 5 they were looking for. They also had a freshman win the JV race in 17:28.

That's all for Now Folks!

  1. I think WCH 62 second spread is a huge concern. I know the workout this week may have hurt them, but still. If they don't tighten that spread in the next few weeks NA will beat them handily at states.

    1. is it fair to compare WCH and NA's spreads when having Russell hurts them, based on the spread stat but is huge in terms of point scoring?

    2. Very good point. Their "spread" would look great in Russell were 30 seconds slower. That stat is overrated since it depends on who's in the race and how many.

    3. Fair point. I still think WCH still needs to be a little faster 2-5, but I don't think they are as far behind as I thought originally.

  2. PennTrack #6 WCE would have lost to William Tennent even if Cummings were there and won the race.

  3. What's really sad is if Cummings was there, wce would have gone 1,3,4, and still lost the race! Do they have a 5th yet?

    1. They'll tell you they do, and a 6th and 7th.

  4. Hey RJJL, nice call on your Henderson boys, they looked like real world beaters out there today. Greatest PA team ever huh? Maybe you should talk up the Unionville girls team instead.

    1. In response to this quickly, as I will be making a whole post-
      1. Barchet has been running workouts with Russell but it hasn't shown in races yet. This guy is an XC All-American, and I know he is in shape to place top 10 in this meet. Put him at 10th and that's (-16)

      2. Stratman lost his shoe. He'd be at least with Collins (who had a bad race) if not with Waltz. Put both of them in the top 40 and they're right with CBA.

Henderson's pieces are all there. They just started racing, this is there September 1st. Give them a couple more races to warm-up. Not saying they'll be able to beat out NA at the state meet, but they are far better than they showed today. I'd put NA ~100 to 120 points today (McGoey 9 and there 5th man about 29th).

    2. I mean with Knapp (not Waltz) for #2.

    3. Yeah, I missed that one pretty bad. Forrest was very Etrainesque, he called Russell winning and a 75 point difference with CBA.

I guess I got caught up in the hype of the Henderson invite performance and the potential. Today they barely looked like the 2012 WCH team, let alone the 2006 Coatesville team. However, the same disappointment happened at Briarwood last year when O’Hara crushed them. Not to brag, but I distinctly remember posting I still think they’d be there by states, but they have some work to do. Well, they’ve got some work to do this year too. That team is much more talented than what they showed today.

Of course talent and a $1.45 will get you a small coffee at Wawa, so they better use this day as a wake-up call.

By the way, the Unionville girls are doing fine without me talking them up.

    4. "Today they barely looked like the 2012 WCH team" - If you look closely they WERE better than last years team. Russell, 4th to 1st and a few sec. faster. Barchet, 33rd to 26th and a few sec. faster. Last yr. #3 Rimkis was 50th. Replaced by, Knapp, for 33rd place and 13 sec. faster. #4 Stratman was 57th last yr. but because of DEPTH, Waltz was there to snag 53rd. Collins #5 last year for 58th place, this year was 55th.

    5. Their top 5 were a net 8 seconds faster than last year, that's hardly worth arguing over.

  5. NA is definitely going give WCH a run for their money at the state meet.

  6. Kevin James (O'Hara) wins Delcos in roughly 15:58 by himself, proving Bulldog to be short/extremely easy. Chris Kazanjian (Penncrest) 2nd, Belfatto (O'Hara) 3rd, Fowler (Haverfird) 4th, Matt Kazanjian (Penncrest) 5th, Hanson and Holm (both Radnor) were either 6 and 7 or 7 and 8, if I remember correctly

    1. Bulldog is a joke claiming to be a 5K, but 15:58 on the championship course is real.

    2. I was there James ran 15:53 and cruised in at the end and the kazanjians looked pretty good with belfatto and Fowler from Haverford

    3. Sorry full results haven't been posted by the worshipful PennTrack yet, so my initial comment was off.

Top 12 finishers according to Delco Daily Times:

      4. David Fowler, Haverford (JB + 1 sec)
      5. Matt Kazanjian, Penncrest
      6. Watson Hanson, Radnor
      7. Connor Holm, Radnor (WH + ~2 sec)

  7. Stratman lost a shoe during the race.

    1. He lost it early too, and had no sock. The Van Cortlandt course is a terrible course to lose a shoe on - all gravel/rocky trail.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, that's why the whole team except Russell and maybe Knapp and Waltz underperformed, a magic shoe. Their supposed "depth" is supposed to take care of that.

      Delete
    3. They do have depth, I'd like to see CBA and Manlius run the workout that Henderson did on Wednesday and then come back and run Manhattan 3 days later. I hope Stratman's foot is ok -- that must have been awful.

  9. Henderson looked like they had some depth jv wise, they had a few good freshmen in one of the freshmen races, and a decent sophomore along with Gordy Barchet in the jv race that both ran mid 14s. Maybe not as many young guys as Dwest, but they're still there.

  10. Manhattan is super competitive-6 or 7 top 25 teams depending on what poll you look at. Probably, the most competitive race in the country. Henderson averaged 3 seconds faster and scored 32 points less then last year in a deeper race on a slower day with some poor performances.. Weather last year was ideal. This year was warm and windy. They averaged about 2:30 plus or minus from Manhattan to Districts. Russell was 2:47, Barchet-2:23, Rimkis-2:37, Collins-2:28, G. Barchet-2:36, Waltz-2:41. 1-5 spread isn't relevant when you have a guy who could break 14:40 on the State course. Don't give up on those guys yet. I'm sure they're pissed at losing to the NY teams.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sorry, meant 15:40 on the State course.

Also, Conestoga looks really good. Pennsbury's 4 and 5 could hurt them at Districts. Their top 3 look great. DTW were probably in over their heads. They would have been better off in one of the varsity races. They're much less crowded. The course really narrows down about 400m in. WCE should not be in the top 10 in the penntrack poll. They'll score 240+ points out of 4 and 5 at Districts.

    2. Russell also beat a guy who I believe was ranked 17th in the nation. He also ran a 9:07 2 mile and 4:12-3 or so mile on a stress fracture soooo...... to see him be back and doing this stuff is pretty legit when he would have had to take so much time off. Even if its only 4 seconds faster than last year, he's probably where he'd be in august rather than September because he started so much later than the rest of his team.

  11. Forrest, don't let the pt. spread between WCH and Tatnall confuse you. WCH averaged 10 sec. per mile faster than Tatnall today vs. 2 sec. difference at Carlisle.
Henderson total time was 49 sec faster today vs. 13 sec. faster than Tatnall at Carlisle.

  12. I'm not telling you how to run your blog or anything but I do feel as though a full post on Mid-Penns would be good. BIG stuff happened there LD and Red Land both fall to Carlisle. Nissley upseting Brehm. State College's pack. Not to mention all on a sloppy course from lots of rain.

    1. I heard it wasn't last year but I'm not sure if it was changed this year. To my knowledge, only bulldog and tennent are not a full 5k. I don't want to start another debate about every other meet course length because I believe every coure except the 2 I mentioned are full 5k. Just my thoughts.

    2. Bulldog messes with peoples heads, they think they're better than the really are.

    3. It seems like the times were slower across the board this year. So maybe they pushed the finish back?

      Delete
    4. i ran the course with a friend after the race. I had it at 3.13 on my Garmin, he had it at 3.12. I'd say it's a pretty fair 5k. Not sure what it looked like last year, but it wasn't short this year and it really didn't run that fast either either because of the wind or the soft spots. Abbington, Bulldog (for obvious reasons) and Lehigh are faster IMO.

    2. Not very muddy at all, surprisingly. Softened a little bit so it wasn't hard as a rock, too. Nobody came out into the main park area with mud on their shoes. A little windy, but easily comparable to last year.
