Where will the rest of the Henderson squad be? It’s too
early to tell exactly where they’re all at, but it’s still early October and
they’re getting ready for early December. This is like when teams opened their
seasons the first/second weekend of September, so if they don’t totally kill it
I still won’t be worried since they have so much time. But right now their top
6 is looking very impressive.
Let’s talk about another West Chester kid, Chris Cummings.
First off running 4:41 for a gym 1600 record is funny, I remember Chris
Campbell running 4:30 for the gym record his senior year during the XC season
during a workout day as well. Cummings is just so much stronger this season
than last year just based on race photos. He must have been doing some type of
lifting program allowing him to gain strength, coming with that is the ability
to handle high mileage better. (this is just speculation), but I really like
what I’m seeing. Going out hard and finishing in 9:33 for 2 miles is very
impressive alone on a track. 8 laps gets boring really quick and Henderson is
usually fairly windy (I’ve been told it was fairly calm today), I can say this
from experience as I did the same thing my junior year at Henderson’s invitational
(in the slow heat haha). I want to move him up, but until he can beat some of
the top 9 guys, I cannot in good conscience do so, and I’ll tell you why: When
he ran 16:17 and I’d guess he’d be capable of running 16:10ish now on the state
course, I would argue that everyone ahead of him, especially the top 8 could
all run under 16:05 if not 16:00 at Hershey at this point in the season.
I really love what Coach Kelly is doing meet wise to help
guys get races in. So I wanted to thank him from the running community for
setting these up, not many coaches are willing to go the extra mile to help out
the running community.

P.S. Look for meet previews tomorrow afternoon! And thanks to everyone who brought information to the blog about the Henderson meet. Makes my job worth it :)
Really impressed with that Henderson pack-man, are they well coached. They literally were gliding through those runs last night. You know if they were allowed to, they'd have given each other one hell of a race.
ReplyDeleteCummings looked strong too. I know 9:33 would have barely eeked out a Chesmont win for him but it's xc season and he was literally running alone. But again, if the Henderson crew were all out racing, I think he would have finished behind Russell, Barchet and maybe some others. But he definitely would have pr'd...and by a lot.
It mas a full mile and a 3200m. Henderson boys wore spikes for mile and trainers for 3200, which, if you've never done that, is not easy. Cummings looked great. To be in the top ten at States, he'll have to run a lot smarter. He'll probably win CMs and be in the top 6 at Districts.
ReplyDeleteHe can win Chesmonts, if Russell lets him-and that may happen, depending on Henderson's strategy going in to Chesmonts. Also I think Barchet can easily outrun Cummings as well as Keinzle (sp?) out of Kennett.
DeleteDon't think Cummings will beat Russell and I think Russell will do what he needs to win Chesmonts.
DeleteInteresting is how Henderson's training schedule might impact results. It appears that Henderson's training is about four weeks behind everyone. So while most runners will start tapering for Districts and State in a week or so, Henderson may not start tapering until after States.
If he is still doing regular workouts, will Russell be able to beat Wilson at Districts? Will he be able to win at States? We will see in a few weeks.
Also to note, Colin Abert ran 15:04 at Phillipsburgs NJ for course record this week. I wasn't able to find if it is a 5k or a 3 miler, but still very impressive either way. Phillipsburgs' top kid was 16:32 at Homdel (where Harriman ran 16:12 for the win last season) and Abert blew him out of the water.

DeleteThe article recognized that by stating GV is 6-0, but it sounds like they were just referring to the championships at Unionville next week.
DeleteWhoops. Misread. My bad. Thank you.
DeleteColin Abert of Easton ran 15:04 officially at the annual philipsburg v. easton meet. It was a 3.1 5k course.

Forrest, you say the wch top 6 is impressive, but I have to say their top 10 is impressive. Their depth is their secret weapon, well that and the best coach in the state.
ReplyDeleteForrest, I hear your reasoning on not moving Cummings up in the rankings, but if we’re basing it on performance and not potential, like the #1 team ranking has rightly been since Foundation, it’s hard to argue many guys have had a better season so far than Cummings. He’s won Abington and Foundation, and I believe has only been beaten by two guys this year: James and Russell. He’s really been a surprise, I doubt he was on anyone’s top 10 radar coming in to the year. Just my opinion, but I’d have him in the top 5 as of right now.
ReplyDeleteThat said, after last night I can’t even predict he’ll be top 5 at Chesmonts next week!, Henderson looked that good. And Chris Kienzle has been quietly having a good year and hung with the WCH pack yesterday. Chances are though WCH goes for the team win at Chesmonts, treats it like a tempo run, leaving top spots for others.

Agree @ Cummings-kid is a top 5, maybe top 3 stud. I don't think anyone was doubting him but there was so much over-inflated hype for his team-that's where the criticism was aimed.
DeleteHenderson looked like a division 1 team last night.
They talk a big game, at least last year they backed it up and made states. This year maybe not, though they think so.
DeleteSpeaking of Meet Records:
ReplyDeleteCasey Comber of HH broke a meet record this past weekend at a Dual meet that was previously held byMatt Kaycon from back in 2009 (he went on to place 17th @ States that year and 8th the next year). When racing a course that so many Suburban One League teams have raced there are bown to be fast races. He and Brophy battled to the line with Comber breaking the tape in 15:43; Brophy was just a second behind. Kaycon's previous record was 15:58.
This is a great sign for these two guys. I'm glad to see Brophy back in it.

Another Note: On Neshaminy's ~3 Mile Course (it was about 2.8 when I ran it in high school, but it has been increased by 400m, extremely fast though).
ReplyDeleteRoss Wilson continued his winning streak with a 15:08. Kyle Francis outkicked Arita in 15:29 to 15:31. Simmons and Griswold were 15 seconds behind them.
More proof of the bull Bulldog course is the Dwest got a lot of hype after that meet and those crazy times, even getting a top 10 rating, yet Unionville and Rustin looked just as good as them at the Henderson Invite.
ReplyDeleteDTW worked out like Henderson, far lower intensity though. All top DTW runners ran ~5:30 in the mile, then had to race the 2 mile, so I wouldn't compare it to Unionville and Rustin. Some of their mid-high 16:00 freshmen only raced the mile too.
DeleteToo bad DTW didn't work out at a higher intensity, that would have silenced doubters instead of needing to make excuses.
DeleteTop rustin guys ran mile and two mile as well.
DeleteDTW freshmen could beat a combined unionville rustin varsity. DTW is the team of the future.
DeleteWhat's with the absurd comments?
ReplyDeleteYou mean the one's posted at 1:30 in the morning?
DeleteNo the ones about Brendan Shearn and that girl that have since been deleted (it appears.)
DeleteYes, I did delete some Vulgar comments last night. They were extremely inappropriate.
